Born out of necessity, coffee tables were introduced in coffee houses in the 17th and 18th centuries simply because regular tables were too tall for comfortable glass resting. As necessity and design modernized, so did the materials used to create coffee tables, ushering glass and metals has more common options.

It’s pretty clear that the lust for the 80’s and 90’s permeated not only current fashion friends, but also interior design ones. So, it’s no surprise that glass coffee tables have made their way back into living rooms. Their styles range from eclectic to modern, making them a great choice for a living room that doesn’t want to come off as stale.

What the Experts Say

While the glass isn’t weak, it’s best to be mindful of the weight and what’s going on and around them. Diana Farberov, a professional Brooklyn-based interior designer, stays mindful about using softer objects or mats and cork boards under harder objects to protect the surface. Glass coffee tables might not be the best option for a household with pets and kids. They can, however, help a tight space feel less cramped. You can find versions that have tiered storage options as well as mixed materials if you don’t want to go all glass. Tiered storage also helps declutter a living room space, so it’s worth keeping an eye out for.

Farberov stays excited about all the styling options glass coffee tables present. She recommends coffee table books for an easy styling solution. They’re a great way to continue to show your personality because there are books on just about every topic. Just because the table is glass doesn’t mean everything on it has to match. Diana also suggests trays and catch-all in a variety of materials as well as personal pieces like photos and travel souvenirs. If your table has tiered under storage, you can add a little more there and keep the top simple.

A few hacks from Farberov:

  • Make sure to keep the glass surface clean on your coffee table. Fingerprint stains are a sure way to cheapen the look of the piece.
  • Source your glass coffee table last to ensure you choose the right shape for the space.
  • When choosing a coffee table shape, be mindful of who’s going to be using the space. A living room filled with kids beckons for a circular table with fewer sharp corners.
  • Shop on Etsy for more unique glass coffee tables if the regular retailers aren’t doing it for you.

The glass top provides an airy surface for simple styling and the secondary wood shelf offers extra storage space.

This kind of table is perfect for a mid-size living room. The glass top introduces a lighter element while the wood (or marble depending on your preference) grounds the piece in the space. West Elm also has matching circular and end tables if you’re looking to complete the set.

Tanner Square Bunching Table in living room with decor

BEST FOR SMALL SPACES

Tanner Square Bunching Table

Not everyone has the space for an extravagant coffee table. Luckily, these bunching tables from Pottery Barn are a workable solution. Whether you have room for one or two, an iron frame mixed with glass shelving still creates the coveted mixed-material look. The tiered base also gives you extra storage space that’s so necessary in studio or small-space living.

The idea of bunching tables should peak your interest. It’s akin to a modular solution without the cookie-cutter aesthetic that comes from sellers like IKEA. In fact, this is one of the more affordable pieces that Pottery Barn offers.

Point Reyes Rectangular Coffee Table in living room

BEST FOR JUST THE GLASS TOP

Point Reyes Rectangular Coffee Table

If a glass top is all you’re after, the Point Reyes Rectangular Coffee Table from Williams Sonoma is your solution. The glass top makes for a functional hard top surface spanning what would otherwise be a very textured surface. The beauty of a glass-top-only coffee table is that you still benefit from the reflectivity of the glass. It’ll bounce light, lifting the room and the heaviness of the coffee table base.

The style of this coffee table skews more beachy and less modern. That comes from the handwoven base material, which creates a more natural line as opposed to hard, straight ones.

SIMPLEST DESIGN

Medium Rectangle Glass Coffee Table with Shelf

Sometimes simple design is all you need, especially if you’re a function over form kind of person. Farberov recommends this as an affordable option as well. It has the makings of a trendy coffee table, but also boasts a second shelf for added functionality and storage space.

Donique Coffee Table against gray background

TRENDIEST

Donique Coffee Table

In today’s era, trendiest also means a nod to 90’s and early 2000’s. The Donique Coffee Table is all glass and so in line with the resurgence of that retro style. This is basically one solid piece of tempered glass that waterfalls at each end to create its legs. In this case, the glass is also recycled, so you can take comfort in knowing it’s a more eco-friendly glass coffee table option.

The primary benefit of an all glass coffee table is that it doesn’t leave you with an eyesore in your living room. It barely even looks like it’s there. That lets you play more with color, texture, and overall style in your living room space.

Urban Outfitters Aria Coffee Table against white wall

DESIGNER RECOMMENDED

Aria Coffee Table

Farverov selected this Aria Coffee Table from Urban Outfitters for its simple, yet bold styling. The wavy wood base offers more whimsical and 80’s inspired design while the glass top stays simple to balance out the the table.

Ibolili Bleach Round Coffee Table against white background

FUNKIEST GLASS COFFEE TABLE

Ibolili

Glass-top coffee tables make for great statement pieces in a living room space. The Ibolili is no exception. The teak wood base is a show stopper. The beauty of this table is the way it takes something so natural and makes it a furniture piece. What you lose in storage space and conventional form, you make up for in pure style and boldness.

When it comes to styling, the statement piece does the heavy lifting. The rest of your space can remain simple with maybe just a few color pops to avoid a whole beige and brown color palette.

MOST AFFORDABLE

Rectangle Modern Coffee Table

Glass coffee tables are great, but they can get really pricey really quick, especially if you’re considering mixed materials and tiered shelving. If you’re trying to create a grown-up space on a budget, this might be just the right coffee table for you.

It still offers a mix of glass and metal. The metal tubular legs are oriented in a unique shape, which imbue the table with its own personality. You get a little bit of the statement piece vibe mixed with the functionality of rectangle glass top.

The 9 Best Four Poster Beds to Make You Feel Like a King https://spy.com/articles/gear/style/best-four-poster-beds-1202960650/ https://spy.com/articles/gear/style/best-four-poster-beds-1202960650/#respond Tue, 27 Jun 2023 21:31:00 +0000 https://spy.com/?p=1202960650 Our editors independently select the products we recommend. Before the 15th century, most folks were sleeping on floors in communal spaces of their private residences. Beds were status symbols for the rich and noble. They did it up. Their bed frames were ornate four poster designs adorned with fabrics, tapestries and pillows as well as carvings illustrating their coat of arms. While something so stately isn’t exactly coveted these days, a bed frame is a different type of status symbol these days: a representation of self care and value.

Ask the Experts

If you’re wondering whether the ornate four poster beds of old are still a good look for the modern home, you can rest assured knowing you won’t need to go searching for rolls of tapestry and piles of pillows to match that aesthetic. Just because those four poster bed designs are a thing of the past, doesn’t mean they haven’t adapted.  Diana Farberov, Founder of Artemuse Design, is an interior designer and artist based in Brooklyn, is seeing a lot of designers with various styles bring them into their projects.

Many of the newer four poster and canopy bed frame designs are more minimal and add an air of sophistication to their bedrooms. “It’s a very traditional form with a rich history but is now being interpreted in a modern way so it doesn’t feel dated,” says Farberov. They’re still luxe furniture pieces but are now designed in a way that’s much more elevated as opposed to gaudy. Farberov goes on to say that they’ve become almost and extension of bedroom architecture despite being furniture pieces.

Farberov does admit that four poster beds can make a room look small, even if that room isn’t particularly small. Because of the vertical space they take up, they create the illusion of a filled room when compared to a standard bed frame. That doesn’t mean you can’t bring them into smaller rooms, though. It’s a game of balance with the other decor in the space.

Farberov recommends starting with the four poster bed first and design around that focal piece, especially in a new bedroom. Be mindful of windows to make sure no views are blocked by the bed structure. For Farberov, these beds are all about proportion. The only wrong time to incorporate a four poster bed is when it’ll block coveted window space and feel out of proportion next to your other furniture and decor in the space.

West Elm Mid Century wood four poster bed against white background

BEST OVERALL

Mid-Century Canopy Bed

When in doubt, a mid-century piece of furniture is a safe choice when redecorating or adding a new piece into an existing space and West Elm is basically the master of this. Mid Century looks are a little tired, but still relied upon heavily. This four poster/canopy bed made the list because of its simple design. It also features a clean-lined headboard, which looks great and adds functionality. It’s made from sustainably sourced wood, so you get a solid bed frame and can rest easy.

If it’s a little too minimal, the canopy structure allows for some fabric draping. It’s a great canvas for linens in the summer for elevated and sophisticated decor. If you decide to leave it bare, there’s still a stately presence without it being too much.

Pottery Barn farmhouse canopy bed in bedroom with two nightstands

BEST FARMHOUSE STYLE CANOPY BED

Farmhouse Canopy Bed

A farmhouse style four poster bed is another great clean design with a little more meat on the frame as opposed to a minimal mid century-modern design. This canopy bed option from Pottery Barn also comes in a few different wood stains. The lighter wood will help you get that beachy look.

Since this frame is slightly more on the chunky side, draping light linen fabrics will help make it feel a little lighter. You can also opt for light-colored bedding and pillows for your bed decor as well. This is a good opportunity to incorporate some of those linen textiles that Farberov previously recommended.

CB2 Melrose Canopy Bed against white wall

MOST MODERN DESIGN

Melrose Canopy King Bed

If a full canopy structure isn’t quite your taste, but you’re still looking for something that makes a statement, this Melrose Canopy King bed from CB2 offers a unique modern design. The dark wood juxtaposed against the upholstered head and foot boards creates a strong masculine aesthetic. The extended posts at each corner offer a nod back to that kingly history of four poster beds without the extravagant adornment.

This is a great option for a tighter room as well. Since the structure is fairly minimal, you won’t be blocking window views or struggling with proportion too much, which is something that Farberov cautioned against when styling four poster beds.

MOST RUSTIC

Cayden Campaign Panel Canopy Bed with Corner Brackets

If budget isn’t an issue and chunkier, rustic design is more your favor, this canopy bed from Restoration Hardware fits the bill. The rustic elements are highlighted in the exposed wood grain of the headboard and the metal brackets at the corners of the bed. These are great details that call back to the more stately designs of 15th century four poster beds but with more modern appeal.

A bed like this is great for a more masculine aesthetic without having to go minimal. Mixing materials, like woods and metals, offers a unique design element with that masculine touch. It also gives you an option to play with both materials throughout the rest of your design.

black cane four poster bed in empty room with light wood floors

BEST SUBTLE STATEMENT

Cane Four Poster Bed

You want to make a statement, but you don’t want the statement to be the only thing you notice in the bedroom, enter the Cane Four Poster Bed from Williams Sonoma. They call it clean lines paired with textured detail. The hand-turned posts at the four corners of the bed offer some great subtle detail and the texture is apparent in the headboard. The black stain makes it more subtle.

Darker furniture is a great way to anchor a room, especially if that room is painted in a lighter color. The solid mahogany used throughout the frame is reminiscent of the 15th century origin of four poster beds.  This is one of those designs that Farberov was referring to when she said the bed design speaks for itself. Simple bedding will help highlight the structure and design.

black four poster bodhi canopy storage bed

SIMPLEST DESIGN

Bodhi Canopy Storage Bed

If simple design is what you’re after, the Bodhi Canopy Storage Bed from Arhaus is exactly that. You’re essentially getting a wood storage bed with a canopy. It looks great and has some meat with the thickness of the canopy structure, but there aren’t many frills beyond that. It’s offered in two different stains, ebony and salvaged grey.

The added storage option is a nice touch, making the bed more functional than just decorative. It’s perfect for extra bedding or whatever else doesn’t fit in your closet. Overall, the heaviness of the frame and storage bed is balanced by the simple design and makes for a perfect masculine-style bedroom piece.

MOST AFFORDABLE

Celeste Upholstered Bed

It’s no secret that four poster beds and canopy beds can ring up fairly high and aren’t necessarily for the budget buyers, but this metal frame stands out as way more affordable than most other options on the market. You get some nice design details with the gold, electroplated corner connection pieces and great clearance underneath. The downside of the budget buy is that there is no headboard, and depending on what kind of sleeper you are, that could be a deal breaker.

The design is sleek and the metal frame makes the size of the bed feel more manageable. Adding draped curtains or linens will also help make this bed feel more luxurious as well. It’s a great upgrade to a standard metal bed frame.

Delbert upholstered canopy bed against white background

MOST ORNATE

Delbert Upholstered Canopy Bed

A better tagline for this bed frame would’ve been “most akin to what you thought a four poster bed frame would look like.” The ornate detailing at the canopy, the unique carving in the posts, and the extravagant headboard all call back to the four poster beds of long-gone medieval nobles. Wayfair describes the bed as a fresh take on centuries-old design, but the definition of “fresh” is left up to you.

BEST METAL FRAME

Briella Metal Canopy Bed

If a simple metal canopy frame is what you’re after, Target offers a decent one for the price. There are a few color options for your selection and it fits in a standard-ceiling room, coming in at under 7 feet. The headboard leaves a little bit to be desired, but that can easily be beefed up with additional pillows.

Target is a great resource for affordable furniture. Since this bed is a bit more budget-friendly, you can consider additional bed sets and drapes to help dress the bed up to fit your decor.

Learning how to decorate a bed is critical for anyone who lives indoors. There are plenty of instances where having a well-manicured bed is an important showcase for one’s level of maturity, be it a date coming back to the apartment or—since COVID-times—your desk Zoom background also including a bed. The task requires more than just pulling the bedspread up and fluffing pillows though. Learning how to decorate a bed properly requires making smarter choices based on each person’s lifestyle, from the bedframe up to the smallest throw pillow.

What the Experts Say

“It’s a form of self love,” says Diana Farberov, a Brooklyn-based interior designer and artist. “Sleep is an essential part of our lives, therefore you want to make the space where you spend that time a haven.” Creating a calming space within your bedroom helps keep stress levels low. Less stress means more sleep, and calming bed decor can help support that.

On a slightly less personal level, partners notice bed decor. Erin Delander, interior designer and feng shui practitioner, notes that the bed is not only a place to recharge, but an intimate one as well, so it should be inviting. A bed with fewer pillows than there are heads in it is a sure-fire deterrent. The dorm room aesthetic isn’t exactly the sanctuary you need once you’ve left campus. A little effort put into your bedding can go a long way, and even potentially all the way. When decorating your bed, consider the overall decor of the bedroom. Faberov recommends nailing down 4 key colors from your bedroom for tying into your bedding.

Bed Frame

Operating under the assumption that you’ve got a decent mattress, the first place to start is with a solid, good-looking bed frame. The options can feel overwhelming. There’s everything from ornate four-poster beds to minimal metal frames.

If this is an early foray into bed decor, stick with something simple. Mid-century modern styles offer solid design mixed and a minimal aesthetic, which gives you the opportunity to use the other bedding elements.

Wooden Thuma bed frame with white covered mattress and two pillows

Thuma Bed Frame

Thuma offers a great minimal bed frame that’s easy to assemble. It comes with headboard add-ons and some basic pillows as well. The solid wood looks good in most rooms. This will be a bed that you’re proud to sleep on and show off to guests. It’s a bit pricier, starting at $995 for a queen, but consider the fact that this is a piece of furniture you’ll be touching almost everyday.

Mellow Naturalista Classic solid wood bed frame f=in decorated bedroom

Mellow Naturalista Classic

For a more affordable option, you can always turn to Amazon. This has a similar aesthetic to the Thuma design, but for way under the price. It doesn’t have all the extra add-ons, but you’ll be able to bolster your decor budget with the savings.

Headboards

Consider a headboard as part of your base bed decor. This can be something simple or make a bold statement. A bold headboard adds a focal point to your bedroom and elevates the entire look of your bed. They also serve to make sleeping a little more comfortable if you’re not a lie-flat sleeper.

light grey diamond tufted mid-rise headboard with pillows and white comforter

Diamond Tufted Mid-Rise Headboard with USB Ports

A tufted headboard goes nicely with most bed frames, and this one in particular adds a function to form with USB ports. A simple grey color gives you a nice background for your other bedding and makes it easier to make bedding swaps without buying new furniture.

forest green colvard upholstered headboard

Colvard Upholstered Headboard

This offers a great statement piece for your bedroom without being too pattern crazy. A bold color is the perfect way to create the focal point in your bedroom and will help guide the rest of your bedding decor. Plus, it’s a great style hack for convincing people you’ve had a knack for bedroom decor the whole time.

High-Quality Bedding

Even if you didn’t splurge on the bed frame or headboard, this is your sign to invest in high-quality bedding. Bedding encompasses your flat sheets, fitted sheets, sleeping pillow shams, and comforters. These are the bedding essentials and make a huge difference in the way you’ll actually feel in your bed. They can make an affordable bed feel like the ones reserved for only the rich of the 16th century.

This is where it’s time to start thinking about color and style. These are your base level sheets, which means you can go with solid, neutral colors that serve as a base for more detail in your final touches or you can add patterns and start bold. Pick colors that compliment or match your headboard, just don’t pick a competing pattern if you chose a bold one.

folded white Supima Percale Solid sheet set against white background

Washed Supima Percale Solid Sheet Set – Casaluna™

Target has great options for sheet sets. Farberov gives Target high praise as her secret weapon for great quality sheets. A pack like this sets you up with a fitted sheet, flat sheet, and two pillow cases in the same color. You get a solid base without having to match them on your own. Consider getting two sets of sheets so you can swap and wash when needed. Diana also recommended playing with some color contract with your sheets, feel free to keep them white or light to contrast the rest of the colors of your bedroom.

folded luxe hardcore sheet set against white background

Luxe Hardcore Sheet Bundle

Brooklinen has become a common name in luxe bedding and home linens. If you’re looking to pamper yourself, these are smart picks. The light patterns they offer offer nice subtle detail to your bed decor.

folded white linen sheet set from brooklinen

Linen Move-In Bundle

If you’re looking for an all-in-one package, Brooklinen offers a sheet bundle along with a duvet cover, comforter and two pillows so you have everything you need to sleep soundly the same day they arrive. Otherwise, you’re stuck shopping for comforters and sleep pillows separately from the options above. Delander also notes that sheets help regulate body temperature, so a linen set is perfect for sleepers that run hot.

Duvets and Blankets

Think of the duvet or top blanket as your time to shine. It’s a great piece for exploring texture, color, and pattern. Since it’s the top layer of your bed, it’ll be the most visible. Choose something that is comfortable to sleep with and coordinates with your bedding and furniture.

folded white down alternative comforter

Down Alternative Comforter

A comforter like this is a pretty standard piece of bedding. It will require a duvet cover to protect the comforter on a regular basis, but that gives you the opportunity to add an element of pattern or color to match your bed sheets. The down alternative is a eco-friendly option here as well.

greige waffle weave comforter and pillow set on made bed

Washed Waffle Weave Comforter & Pillow Sham Set

This waffle weave comforter adds a textural element to your bedding and comes with an additional set of pillow shams to tie in your pillow decor. It comes in a lot of different colors to match your bedroom style and is great all-year long.

Sleeping Pillows

Yes, there’s a first layer of pillows and pillow shams. These are all the pillows you actually need to sleep. The ones your head sits on. Farberov says any bed larger than a twin should have a minimum of two pillows (regardless of the number of occupants).

Pillow shams are good to double-up on so that you can wash and cycle through them. Keep the decor simple and match it to the rest of your bedding. Luckily, many of the bed sets come with at least two pillow shams.

washed cotton sateen quilt sham on pillow

Washed Cotton Sateen Quilt Sham – Threshold™

These are a simple option for pillows you’ll actually use to sleep rather than just serve as decor. Again, most of the sets we’ve mentioned above will come with matching pillow shams as well. Keep it simple and comfortable for resting your head (back, knees, and toes).

Linen Pillowcase Set

Parachute offers great selections for bedding and bed decor. These pillow shams are nice and light and also come in a variety of colors to match your bedding.

Decorative Pillows

This seems to be where many guys lose interest. Too many pillows on the bed always end up being a point of contention between couples, but when you stand back and look at a bed with only sleeping pillows, it looks a little bare. Even just one decorative pillow can change the whole aesthetic of the bed.

Consider mixing sizes, patterns, and colors here. If you build your decorative pillows like a pyramid, you can start with the largest in the back and build out into smaller ones in the front. Select a pillow that is slightly smaller than all your others in a textured fabric to add some visual depth, per Farberov’s direction.

If decorative stand-alone pillows aren’t in the budget, you can snag more colorful and patterned pillow shams for your sleeping pillows. You can then layer up some of those sleeping pillows outside the duvet to create a more styled look.

A lumbar pillow like this is a perfect decorative element for your bed. It’s a good upfront pillow and adds great texture to the bed decor. It’ll be comfortable for lounging too.

Modern Tufted Square Throw Pillow – Project 62™

Smaller throw pillows are well suited for layering and adding pops of color and patterns if you opted for more solid colors in your sheets and furniture. Something like this serves as a bright focal point in your decorative scheme.

Throw Blanket

Throw blankets offer a layering element for bed decor as well as an extra option for cozy naps without having to unmake the bed. Like decorative pillows, these are another chance to add color, pattern, and texture to your bed decor while making the decor feel more intentional.

In the constant battle of dog vs. couch, it’s hard to believe there’s a world where the two can live harmoniously without causing physical or financial damage. The reality of bringing a pup home is a considerable amount of uncertainty. They may be docile and furniture-friendly or playfully anxious at the expense of couch cushions and corners when you’re away. Either way, no living room is complete without a couch and no family wants to send the dog away.

So, when looking for a sofa that makes sense for the whole family (including the dog), do you go for style or sacrifice for durability? Luckily, furniture design and materiality has come a long way. There are a lot more options available that’ll make both you and your dogs happy.

First, Diana Farberov, Brooklyn-based interior designer and pet owner as well, emphasizes considering your dog’s personality and size even before you consider the size and space of the couch. Depending on the size of your breed, you’ll need a couch with ample space for everyone to get comfortable. Then, consider the fabric. Not only does the fabric need to be resistant to all potential pet wear and tear, but it also needs to be easy to clean.

She also mentioned considering not only the size and scale of the couch in the space but also the depth and space as it pertains to actual use. Make sure to have enough room for you, the household, the pups, and potential guests if you plan to entertain. Couch depth is an important dimension here because it can impact how comfortable everyone can actually get on the couch. Erin Delander, owner of Much Love Interiors, also suggests finding a sofa that you can actually get comfortable in, the dogs will manage on pretty much anything.

Haven Leather Chaise Lounge Sectional in living room

BEST OVERALL

Haven Leather 2-Piece Bumper Chaise Sectional

The Haven Leather 2-Piece Sectional from West Elm is the perfect stylish couch option for anyone with dogs. In typical West Elm fashion, it comes in a variety of fabrics. The leather option that it’s shown in is great for durability and ease of cleaning.

It’s a perfect size whether your dog is a cuddler or prefers its own space on the couch. The sectional orientation gives everyone the room they need and it’s low profile makes it easier for smaller pups too. As Farberove noted, size matters in this case, so make sure you’re selecting a couch with enough width and depth.

York Square brown leather sofa from Pottery Barn

MOST STAIN RESISTANT

York Square Arm Leather Sofa

If your dog is prone to bring home messes or shows its love with extra drool, a leather couch like this York Square Arm Leather Sofa from Pottery Barn is a great solution. Leather is durable so you’ll get a long life out of your investment. It’s also easier to clean when compared to other woven fabrics.

This is also a very classic design so working it into your current room decor should be fairly easy. Pottery Barn does offer fabric choices, so if you can also select a pebbled or textured leather, like the Legacy Chocolate, to help hide potential scratches and wear and tear.

the Berkshire Sofa by Williams Sonoma

MOST SCRATCH RESISTANT

Berkshire Sofa

A tightly woven fabric might be exactly what you need if your dog is a scratcher. Tightly-woven fabric, like tweed, has tighter loops in its weaving when compared to other looser fabrics. That means it’s hard for Fido to dig claws into the couch.

Williams Sonoma offers a few performance fabrics for the Berkshire Sofa, which are great for scratch resistance. They guarantee them for pet friendliness, stain resistance, and fade resistance. As Farverove mentioned, performance fabrics that are more widely offered on the furniture market are longer lasting and stand up to pets.

ROOMIEST

Lugano Modular Leather Sofa

Bigger dogs need more room on the couch whether they’re cuddlers or like to spread out. As much as everyone loves a good dog cuddle puddle, those get hot and eventually one of your limbs falls asleep. A couch like this modular sofa from Restoration Hardware is the SPY team’s pick to solve the problem if you have the space.

The sofa is not only large in its length, but also offers almost 4 feet of depth in the seat, making it one of the most comfortable on the list—an important part of selecting a couch like Delander mentioned earlier. That means you’ll be able to sit all the way back with free hanging legs and your pup, regardless of size, should have plenty of room to snuggle next to you or on the other side of the couch.

Block Nomad Sofa Sectional against cream background

MOST HAIR RESISTANT

Block Nomad Sofa Sectional

Everyone knows that pet hair gets everywhere and couches are the biggest magnet of them all, especially if the dogs are allowed up there. Luckily, Burrow offers the Block Nomad Sofa Sectional that is more stain, scratch, and hair resistant. Burrow’s tight olefin fiber weave is a great solution for homes with pets.

BEST FOR SMALL DOGS

Coburn Three Piece Motion Sofa

Smaller dogs need a little help up on the couch, so something that’s lower profile is great for them. The Coburn Three Piece Motion Sofa from Arhaus sits at about 31” off the ground, making it one of the shortest couches on the list.

As an added bonus, the sofa is engineered with performance fabric that is stain, odor, and moisture resistant, making it friendly for your small furry friend in more ways than one. There are also built-in recliners that give it a little more room for relaxation or even help keep the dogs off the couch when needed.

Henry 2-Piece Sleeper Sectional in Living Room

BEST FOR STORAGE

Henry 2-Piece Sleeper Sectional

If the real issue is that there doesn’t seem to be enough storage space for all of Fido’s chew toys and play items (it’s ok, he/she deserves to be spoiled), then a couch with added storage might actually be the most pet friendly for your household. This sleeper sectional not only folds out, but also offers more storage in the chaise. Any extra toys that Fido isn’t playing with at the moment can be tucked away.

BEST FOR FIDO'S OWN SPOT

Terrain 4-Piece L-Shaped Bronze Sectional Sofa

A few things stand out about this sectional from CB2: First, the separate ottoman doubles as a dedicated spot for your dog. If you want it to feel like a part of the family without encroaching on your couch space, an ottoman is a perfect solution. Secondly, the sofa is modular sop you can orient it in whatever way makes sense for you and your pup.

Lastly, velvet is actually a great fabric option for pet-friendly homes. Because the fabric isn’t loop-knit like others, it becomes more scratch resistant. It’s also fairly stain resistant and easy to clean with a simple brush. At the same time, it’s a very luxurious looking fabric, so you won’t have to sacrifice style for functionality.

With all the added expenses that a dog can bring to a household, an expensive couch to accommodate it might not be on the table. Wayfair sells this affordable couch option, which is quite spacious if you need that extra room for you and the dog. The cushions are a polyester blend, which isn’t the absolute best pet-friendly material, but the savings you find in buying the couch leaves you with room in your wallet for slip covers that are.

The best ottomans in any home can serve many purposes—from coffee tables to footstools. It’s no wonder why they’ve transcended history from the Turkish empire that gives the object its namesake to the living rooms of homes everywhere. Originally designed as backless benches for lounging that could span entire wall sections, ottomans evolved into many sizes and shapes to fit the needs of those who use them.

What the Experts Say

Brooklyn-based interior designer Diana Farberov considers two primary functions for ottoman: a place for your feet to rest and a coffee table alternative. Those two functions usually overlap. Oftentimes, they offer a softer look and feel than a traditional hard-surfaced coffee table depending on their size.

They can also serve a space in more ways than a coffee table, particularly in small spaces. Most ottomans now feature additional storage options, work surfaces, and additional seating making them a great way to bring more functionality to a single space. Their shapes and sizes vary quite a bit these days, which actually makes them a great design solution for a variety of spaces. Mikala Kuchera, a Charleston-based interior designs, says ottomans work great in a variety of spaces, such as living rooms, lounge areas, even a bedroom pulled up next to a comfortable chair.

How to Style an Ottoman

Styling an ottoman depends on how you plan to use it. Ottomans are great for bedrooms and living rooms for general added storage and seating. Knowing the what kind of functionality you need from an ottoman will help you determine the size you need and ultimately how to style it.

The smaller varieties, sometimes labeled as poufs, serve as great extra seating and side table options. In those cases, they can be treated as accent pieces in your space. They add color, pattern, and texture in small pops that keeps them from being an eye sore if bold styling isn’t exactly your aesthetic choice. Mikala recommends bold colors and fabrics to bring some fun into the space.

Larger ottomans that replace a coffee table and provide the much needed extra storage space you need obviously take up more space. These tend to come in more neutral tones and materials like leather, velvet and softer fabric. You can treat them as focal points in the room or blend them in to match existing furniture. Often times, they’ll be laden with blankets, coffee-table books, mugs, and more. Mikala also notes that ottomans, particularly larger ones, can be like art pieces in a room. She typically uses color and pattern to add playfulness to a room.

When it comes to using ottomans in a small space, Farberov strongly recommends them as coffee table alternatives. “In a small space, you want every piece you bring into your design to be multifunctional and an ottoman really suits that requirement. You can place a tray on top and it becomes a coffee table, but with the tray removed it can be a soft place to put up your feet. It can even double as additional seating for guests when necessary (push it against a wall and add a few pillows for added back support!).”

Kuchera agrees that ottomans offer a fun design for a small space. Mikala suggests utilizing a coffee table that a few smaller ottomans can fit beneath to stay tucked out of the way and brought out when needed. “Pro tip: put them on casters so they can easily be wheeled wherever needed.”

Ivory Emmett Square Storage Ottoman in living room

BEST OVERALL

Emmett Square Storage Ottoman

The Emmett Square Storage Ottoman made the top pick for this list because of the options that West Elm offers. You get your choice of size and fabric to make this fit perfectly into your space and match the existing decor or become the centerpiece of a makeover.

Each size option offers storage for added functionality. The engineered wood frame makes it sturdy for load bearing and the hidden legs make it look like a floating cloud of added comfort. It’s a bit of an investment but will serve you well.

Kuchera recommends ottomans as storage solutions for tight spaces, but it’s important to note that they can be a little risky. According to Farberov, they can sometimes be easily shifted and knocked depending on how stuffed they are. Go with storage ottomans if you have the immediate need.

CB2 boucle ivory ottoman against white background

BEST FOR SMALL SPACES

Bouclé Ivory Pouf

It’s made for the city renters short on space. The convenient size of this square pouf (18 inches wide) makes it compact enough for a cozy living room. Snag one for kicking your feet up and adding a seat to the space or stock up and use two as side tables and even more seating.

This boucle fabric is woven with recycled yarn and offers a pretty easy design element to incorporate into whatever you have going on already. But, if you’re going for something small, you can also opt for a pouf or ottoman with more pattern since it takes up little space.

MOST AFFORDABLE ELEGANCE

Elroy Faux Shearling Round Ottoman with Wood Legs Cream – Threshold™ designed with Studio McGee

It can be hard to find elegant, quality furniture in a mid-century modern style for an affordable price, but Target did it with this collaboration between Threshold™ and Studio McGee. The soft cushioning mixed with the warm wood tones of the legs give it some quirkiness that’s characteristic of that minimalist mid-century style.

Don’t sleep on Target for smaller home essentials. It consistently offers great pieces for fractions of the cost of some well-known furniture brands and frequently collaborates with great designers.

MOST VERSATILE

Gather Deep Leather Cocktail Ottoman

A leather ottoman is going to be one of the most versatile options for your living room. The Lynx leather in toffee option is a nice neutral brown tone that pairs well with most decor without having to make other adjustments. This one is 40”x34”, which makes it work for foot rests, seating, storage, and coffee table substitutions.

Farberov recommends leather as one of her top choices for ottoman materials. It’s more durable than linen, which can more quickly show signs of wear and tear.

BEST FOR STOCKING UP ON

Brondby Upholstered Pouf

Picture this: you have 4 guests over to your studio apartment and only 2 seats on the small sectional. You go ahead and pull out a couple of these poufs from the foot of your bed or the corner by your plants. Suddenly, you have multiple seating options and can go back to hosting happy hour.

Poufs like this are compact and easy to stock up on. They don’t offer added storage, but if you’re in dire need of a compact sitting room, 2-3 of these make for a great investment.

SIMPLEST DESIGN

Franny Square Leather Ottoman

Simple design can be the most effective. If you just need an ottoman that will give you some additional surface area without impacting the design of your current space, this square leather ottoman is a good choice.

There are no frills, just quality materials crafted for a perfectly square ottoman. It does come in some additional fabric options if leather isn’t your thing.

BEST STORAGE

Enzo Storage Ottoman

It’s simple, but it can pack in all your extra pillows and blankets that can’t fit on the couch. It offers almost 24” of storage depth. This is a great option for keeping a living area tidy.

In typical West Elm fashion, you have a variety of fabrics and finishes to choose from to make this ottoman fit your style. So while it’s simple, it can easily match the aesthetic of your current space.

BEST OVERSIZED OTTOMAN

Modular Leather Sectional Ottoman

An oversized ottoman can tie a space together. It serves not only as a coffee table, but a spot for the kids to play, a place to kick your feet up, extra storage and seating, as well as the focal point of the space. If you have the room, and oversized ottoman can also soften up a space when compared to the usual sharp corners of a traditional coffee table.

The downside of upsizing is the cost. Going for the largest size and adding storage adds up in the price tag, but if it’s in the budget you won’t regret the stately piece. Farberov also recommends the leather and velvet fabrics Pottery Barn offers.

MOST BUDGET-FRIENDLY

Pouf Ottoman

You can always count on Amazon to offer an affordable solution and it’s no different when it comes to these pouf ottomans. If your decorating budget is as tight as your apartment, picking up a couple of these for under $200 is a steal.

The nice thing about small poufs in tight spaces is that they can serve as more permanent seating. No dining room chairs (or table), pull up a few of these around your coffee table and you’ve got a savvy solution.

Remember back when the first cell phones came out and then the race to make them smaller began? Shout out to that tiny Cingular phone. Well, something happened between then and now, and it seems like the race made a U-turn. Suddenly bigger is better.

I made the switch to an iPhone in 2015/16 and got my 8th generation iPhones, and I couldn’t even begin to explain how cool I felt having a phablet. Since then, I’ve been after each of Apple’s largest models. Naturally, I’m obsessed with the iPhone 14 Pro Max, which I’ve been using since its release.

It consistently lands among the best smartphones, and for me, that is largely because of the screen real estate and resolution, the synergy between iOS devices, and the camera. After spending months using the phone, I have a lot more detail to share.

iPhone 14 Pro Max: Design

Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro line is undoubtedly the high-end version of their current devices if you couldn’t already guess by comparing the price tags. I’m a sucker for a piece of tech that works and feels luxurious at the same time.

The matte glass back of the phone paired with the stainless steel edges delivers that premium feel. Sometimes I take my case off just to stare at it, knowing that I could never free-carry in fear of damaging the pristine lines.

Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max in Space Black in Hand

You’re still only getting one Lightning port, which helps with the sleekness but can get cumbersome when you have wired headphones I’and forget to bring the adapter. Though, after a few years of this experience, the calamity this once caused seems so distant. I’m happy there are few inlets for the dust to accumulate.

Yes, the phone is large, but it’s never felt clunky to me personally. It’s still slim and streamlined in hand. Though, I can see how for some it could be too oversized.

The rounded edges help make the phone feel a little less like a tablet. While you can’t always stretch your thumb over to the complete opposite end of the phone, I rarely found myself having to do so. Everything has been fairly accessible with one hand.

Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max home screen in hand

The camera cluster is larger than the predecessor I had (iPhone 12 Pro Max), but the quality of the build and functionality makes their size easy to overlook. I’m also personally a fan of the triple came cluster, it’s giving luxury.

The MagSafe capability, which is like a magnetic connection for accessories to your phone (including safer wireless charging), is seamlessly integrated into the phone and works right out of the gate.

iPhone 14 Pro Max Display: Crisper and Cleaner

The iPhone 14 Pro Max boasts a Super Retina XDR display, which means they’ve integrated an OLED display that makes it really hard to separate individual pixels, and is smooth. If you’re curious what that means to you, basically you can expect clean graphics, images, videos, and display without being able to see the pixels that actually make up the whole image.

Apple iPhone 14 Pro MAx turned on with apps on table

Something new to the 14 Pro Line as a whole is Dynamic Island. If you’re an iPhone user, you’re probably used to the notch that most of the newer models employed before. That’s where the front-facing camera sat and it didn’t integrate into the screen.

In this display, Apple decided to do away with the notch and gave us an island that integrates the camera and interacts with the display on your phone. It’s a little black bar that shows notifications corresponding to the apps you’re using. It’ll tell you when your Uber arrives, what song you’re listening to, when your Airdrop finishes, and much more.

iPhone 14 Pro Max Home Screen Dynamic Island Notification Bar

It’s a handy little tool that was a welcome change for me. Even though the notches of old were small, the Dynamic Island makes a big difference. I feel like I got more usable screen space back.

Dynamic Island aside, overall you’re getting a 6.7” (diagonally) OLED display that keeps everything crisp.

iPhone 14 Pro Max Software: More of What You Know and Then Some

As someone who is not a coder and is just an avid user of Apple products, iOS 16 brings a few upgrades, but the overall user experience is largely unchanged. The Dynamic Island brings some new features and functionality with regard to notifications. It also allows you to quickly access apps in use rather than flip through multiple open screens.

iPhone 14 Pro Mac iOS 16 Lock screen customization

The lock screen customization was one of the more notable features of iOS 16. I got the opportunity to customize the display (including adding an always-on feature) that allowed me to choose pertinent widgets and modify the design itself. I also get to save presets for the lock screen/home screen edits, so you can switch depending on your mood.

I personally love the lock screen customization. As someone whose mood is brightened by design, getting more hands-on control of this sparked much joy.

Apple iOS 16 Home Screen Notification Stacking

One other notable feature for me was the notification stacking and organization on the lock screen. The upgrade in iOS 16 made the notifications feel less invasive. They stack at the bottom of the screen and only expand when you swipe through them. You can also collapse them completely or mute them with Do Not Disturb. As someone who feels chronically overwhelmed by notifications and to-do items, this was a welcome change.

iPhone 14 Pro Max Performance: Same Great Consistency

You know that feeling when you unbox your new phone and it starts up and you can already tell it’s moving faster than your last model and all is right in the world for a few moments? Usually, that honeymoon period expires after a few months. And yet, here I am, a little less than half a year after first unboxing my iPhone 14 Pro Max, and I still have that feeling.

Typically, at around a year after the first turn-on, it feels like iPhones, even just smartphones in general, start to slow down. The battery life diminishes, storage is full, and performance is affected. I haven’t seen that yet with the iPhone 14 Pro Max. It’s a pleasant surprise!

Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max Performance

The overall performance is responsive and fast. I don’t see lag when multiple apps are open. The battery life is still holding together as well. I’m still charging once overnight and lasting all day (that’s with filming content and working from my phone the majority of the day).

Geek Bench gave the iPhone 14 Pro Max a score of 5367 on the multi-core test, which is impressive! It definitely feels like you’re getting what you pay for here.

iPhone 14 Pro Max Camera(s) Review: Do You Even Need Another Camera?

The triple cluster of cameras on the iPhone 14 Pro Max is not a new addition. This cluster has been around for a few generations, but we do keep getting improvements.

One of my favorite features is the quality of the video. The 4K video on this phone looks better than in real life at times. As a full-time content creator, I would get jealous of the creators who could post videos that looked so high-def and real, it felt like you were part of the action. The cameras here deliver that.

iPhone 14 Pro Max Seflie Cam Test

The selfie cam is also clearer than ever. If you spend FaceTime calls nervously looking at yourself on the mini screen to make sure you look all right (like me), you’ll notice how clear the image is.

I also especially love the improvements to ProRAW. This is a shooting mode that processes photo files more like a DSLR or Mirrorless camera. That means that you can edit in software like Lightroom while retaining more information from the photo file. That means you get better editing capabilities with the Apple software.

iPhone 14 Pro Max Portrait Mode Photo Test

The portrait mode for photos and cinematic mode for video has only gotten better. Every time I travel without my Canon camera, I feel pretty safe knowing the iPhone 14 Pro Max is in my pocket.

It can be a little cumbersome to figure out which camera is actually shooting the footage on the back (no they don’t all work at the same time, it depends on what and how you are shooting), but typically the camera keeps up and it’s a smooth process to shoot.

The bottom camera of the cluster is your 48-megapixel lens. It seemingly does the bulk of the work as the default camera that boots up as the camera app is launched. It’s crisp and does very well in regular lighting. As a note, you have to turn on the iPhone’s ProRAW setting to get the benefit of the full 48 megapixels. Otherwise, you’ll be shooting at 12-megapixels.

iPhone 14 Pro Max Main 48 MP Camera Test Photo

The 12-megapixel telephoto lens sits at the top of the cluster and offers you better detail for up-close shots. It’s also the one that gets utilized for Portrait mode photos. You can see the difference in detail in the photo below.

iPhone 14 Pro Max 12 MP Telephoto Camera Test

The camera that sits on the outside edge, completing the triangular cluster, is your Ultra Wide 12-megapixel camera. This camera is great for capturing landscapes or expanding your view when you don’t have much room.

iPhone 14 Pro Max 12 MP wide angle lens test photo

Lastly, you get a 12-megapixel front-facing camera that also stands up to the task. I’ve noticed much better clarity on FaceTime calls and selfies than in previous models. A lot of the grain that was prevalent in older models (even in good light) isn’t there anymore.

iPhone 14 Pro Max 12 MP front facing camera test

You can check out some of the other photos I shot around my apartment in medium/low light as well as some I’ve shot outdoors to get a taste of the camera power. Additionally, all the photos in this post were shot on an iPhone 14 Pro Max because luckily my partner has one as well.

iPhone 14 Pro Max Battery Life: Much Better Than Expected

After using it for some time now, I am still happy with the performance of the 4,323 mAh lithium-ion battery. Normally, by this point in my phone’s life, I’d expect a significant decrease in battery efficiency and overall life, basically charging it multiple times a day.

iPhone 14 Pro Max Battery Charging

I’m so pleased to report that I am still on one overnight charge with no reason to do more during the day. This is with regular use throughout the day. As a full-time digital creator and social media consultant, most of my work is on my iPhone. I’m averaging about 6 hours of screen time per day.

I primarily stick to the fast charging cable and wall adapter for an overnight charge. The iPhone 14 Pro Max has smart charging built-in to learn your charging schedule to optimize how it charges your phone. That means it’s not overloading the battery with juice and helping to extend its overall life.

On heavy video or photoshoot days, I noticed a faster battery depletion, but overall I’m usually good on one charge from 6 am to 11 pm at night. That’s mind-blowing enough for me as someone who used to freak out when my phones would lose 10% charge within an hour after charging.

iPhone 14 Pro Max Review: Our Verdict

Gold iPhone 14 Pro Max on notebook and wooden desk

Yes, the iPhone 14 Pro Max is pricey, and if you’re a tried and true Android user, you’ll probably still feel like it’s behind on the capabilities when compared to those smartphones. But if you ask me, Apple succeeds again at delivering a highly capable and user-friendly phone.

The improvements to functionality and design are noticeable and it even makes me think that the $1099 (depending on your model) price tag is worth it.

The Best Lip Balms https://spy.com/articles/grooming/skincare/best-chapstick-for-men-258963/ https://spy.com/articles/grooming/skincare/best-chapstick-for-men-258963/#respond Thu, 26 Jan 2023 16:00:00 +0000 http://spy.com/?p=258963 Our editors independently select the products we recommend. One thing guys easily forget when it comes to their skincare and grooming routine is adding one of the best lip balms into the steps. If you’re developing your first skincare routine, lip care should be a part of it, and that’s straight from the mouths of dermatologists with whom SPY has spoken.

In terms of the skin itself, moisturizing your lips is just as important as moisturizing your face, maybe even more, since lips are extra sensitive to dryness and potential infection. We know sometimes pulling out a balm, puckering your lips, and lathering on a juicy layer of lip balm can make you feel uncomfortable out in public, but we’d recommend the 15 seconds of awkwardness over dry, cracked lips.

So what’s the best lip balm for men to use today? Well, in a crowded world of products with ever-changing ingredients and ethics, it can be tough to pinpoint who’s got what. To help keep your lips hydrated and healthy, SPY set out to find the best lip balms on the internet to take the guesswork out of the equation. Read on to find out if your favorite product made our list.

As always, we like to keep skincare routines as painless as possible — most of the time, simple works best. That’s why we chose products that could easily fit into your current regimen and, in this case, your pocket.

Lip Balm vs Chapstick: What’s the Difference?

Just as Finkle was Einhorn, Chapstick is lip balm. If you’ve never seen “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective,” that won’t make sense. But in a nutshell, it’s a situation of American English not caring about the rules of language.

Pay attention next time somebody asks you for a tissue, bandage, or soda. They might ask you for a “Kleenex,” “Band-Aid,” or “Coke.” Like these, Chapstick is also a trademarked brand name that’s been adopted as the common monicker for its product category — lip balm. And while this is confusing, generally speaking, most will understand what somebody’s talking about when they say they “need some chapstick.”

Why You Should Use Lip Balm Daily

As far as how often you should be applying lip balms, there is no limit.

Dermatologists we’ve spoken to have said you can apply lip balm as often as you need it. Typically, one to three applications are normal, but you’re the best judge of how much you need. If you’re turning the lip balm into an intermeal snack, then it might be too much.

But dry, cracked lips are unhealthy, and no, constantly licking them isn’t a good substitution. In fact, that actually dries them out. You see, lips are actually a mucus membrane and a literal entry point into your body.

Assortment of Best Lips Balms for Men
Assortment of Best Lip Balms for Men

Dr. Azza Halim, a multi-specialist physician with a focus in aesthetic medicine, reminded us that “our lips lack oil glands, therefore, the lips are unable to retain moisture,” putting them more at risk for dryness. The rest of your skin has oil and sweat glands, but the lips do not.

Applying lip balm regularly throughout the day keeps your lips protected from dryness and can even keep them from getting sunburned. A few of the balms we tested were great for SPF protection, but you can also check out our full list of the best lip balms with SPF.

Picking the Lip Balm for Men

If you’re suffering from daily dry lips and you’re in the market for a new lip balm or chapstick, there are a few things to consider before making your purchase:

  • Pay attention to what’s in your lip balm. Many of the products we tested were natural and chemical-free. Finding vegan lip balms is trickier because a common ingredient used is beeswax. Now, some lip balms are “beegan,” which means that beeswax is the only animal byproduct and is humanely sourced. Keep an eye out for aloe and ingredients that are natural and help soothe skin or lip membranes.
  • You’ll find tube applicators, stick applicators, and jars that require you to use your finger for lip balm application. This is a personal preference, but the ease of use makes a difference in how often you will actually apply your lip balm. Stick-type lip balms with a twist applicator are some of the SPY team’s favorites.
  • You’ll also notice that many lip balms have different consistencies. Some are thicker than others. The SPY team is often split on their preferences. A thicker lip balm makes your lips feel velvety and smooth, but can also be a mess when it comes to application.

Dr. Halim recommends lip balms with ingredients like Vitamin E, castor seed oil, and coconut oil to help lock in moisture. Organic beeswax, for example, is an antibacterial substance that also helps seal in moisture.

To help you in your decision process, we gathered the best lip balms with natural ingredients, various applicators, and consistencies. Every single product featured in this article has been tested by a member of the SPY grooming team, and you’ll find many of the products below in our own medicine cabinets.

Why It’s The Best: Not only is it affordable, but this lasts all day long. No wonder Carmex has been around for so long.

Size.15 ounces
SPF?SPF 15
Core IngredientsBeeswax and lanolin (animal byproduct)

Carmex Lip Balm is a staple product in the industry. They’ve offered protection for lips for as long as most SPY Editors can remember. The fresh cherry tube offers SPF sun protection and water resistance for up to 80 minutes.

There’s a reason Carmex is the OG. It takes one application to keep lips moisturized for most of the day. The cherry flavor was very nostalgic for us to smell and taste, like what you’d expect from a ’90s playground popsicle. Typically at SPY, we’re not for overbearing scents or flavors in our skincare products, but this was pleasant.

Carmex lip balm isn’t too thick but definitely feels like it’s giving your lips a good coat. We wouldn’t mind if it were a little thicker, but the proof is in how long it lasts.

We’re also big fans of the classic twist applicator. It’s easy to use and doesn’t get your hands messy while applying the balm.

Pros

  • Enjoyable Flavor
  • Easy to use and apply
  • Few applications needed

Cons

  • Uses animal byproducts (lanolin)
Chapstick Lip Balm

RUNNER-UP

Chapstick

Why We Chose It: Chapstick is another staple in the lip balm industry. We wanted to see how it held up against the competition.

Size.15 ounces
SPF?SPF 15
Core IngredientsVitamin E

Chapstick isn’t just an OG lip balm player — it’s a household name. They’ve been around for 130 years saving our lips from chapping and cracking. We tested the SPF version in the easy-to-use twist applicator that offers the eight-hour moisture of the original Chapstick with the added bonus of sun protection. They also use an aloe extract that helps soothe your lips and keeps them nice and comfy.

We’re always fans of the added SPF bonus when it comes to lip balms because lips are one of the last body parts you think of when it comes to sun protection.

There isn’t much flavor when it comes to this version, but we didn’t mind it. It just felt like a silk coat on the lips after application. Our team noticed it working through most of the day. We’re not sure we exactly clocked a full eight hours, but it was certainly doing at least a half-day’s work before reapplication.

Pros

  • Easy to use and apply
  • Lasted a majority of the day
  • Very affordable

Cons

  • Uses animal products

Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm, dating back to 1991 in Maine, made our top three because of its attention to sustainability and natural ingredients. Their mix of ingredients helps condition skin and moisturize lips simultaneously.

The SPY team is a huge fan of Burt’s Bees lip balm because we found it very easy to apply and the peppermint flavor left a nice tingle on the lips. This lip balm is a bit thicker than the previous ones we tested, but that helps it last all day. While we like to think that the best lip balms for men are free of animal products, Burts products are “beegan,” meaning they only contain products from bees; in this case, beeswax. With that said, we appreciate that Burt’s beeswax is responsibly sourced and all other ingredients are natural.

Pros

  • Responsibly sourced beeswax
  • Pleasant flavors
  • Easy application

Cons

  • Waxier than most balms we tested
Sun Bum CocoBalm Lip Balm

HONORABLE MENTION

Sun Bum CocoBalm Lip Balm

Why We Chose It: This lip balm came recommended to us by colleagues and we were excited to give it a shot.

Size.15 ounces
SPF?No
Core IngredientsAloe Vera, coconut oil

Sun Bum claims that this is their best lip balm. It features aloe vera and coconut oil to help soothe lips and keep them moisturized. We learned that other than this product, there are lip balms with SPF available because, well, it’s in the brand’s name.

The CocoBalm is one of the best lip balms for men that we tested because of its pleasant scent and light soothing sensation. We liked the Aloe Wave flavor, which surprised us. It was truly like tasting a small ocean current if that ocean was made up of liquid aloe — we mean that in the best way possible.

The SunBum Cocobalm is a thinner lip balm and even though our team needed a few more reapplications than average, the flavor made up for it. We’d definitely keep this in our Dopp kits or desks as a go-to.

Pros

  • A unique and refreshing flavor
  • Smooth finish
  • Not super thick and messy

Cons

  • More than 1-2 applications to last throughout the day
Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm

BEST SPF PROTECTION

Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm

Why We Chose It: The SPY team is a big fan of Jack Black products. We recently tested their moisturizers and wanted to check out their lip balm too.

Size.25 ounces
SPF?Yes
Core IngredientsGreen tea

We like the sound of an Intense Therapy Lip Balm. Jack Black pays close attention to what your lips need to stay healthy, hydrated, and protected. They packed their balm with loads of natural ingredients including Green Tea, Vitamin E, Shea Butter, and Avacado Oil.

This was one of our favorites. We’re suckers for a minty lip balm because that tingle makes it feel like it’s working. And we learned that Jack Black knows what they’re doing because, not only did we forget about dry lips after one swipe, but their lip balm also lasted all day.

With their thicker formula, they recommend an application every 2 hours and if you’re heading into the sun, be sure to apply 15 minutes beforehand for optimal results. The tube is also a great applicator for avoiding messiness — we loved it.

Pros

  • Minty flavor and sensation
  • Long-lasting
  • Immediate soothing effects
  • FDA-Approved skin protectant

Cons

  • A bit pricier, but that could be worth it.
Eos Strawberry Sorbet Lip Balm

TASTIEST FLAVOR

Eos Strawberry Sorbet Lip Balm

Why We Chose It: This is another staple lip balm brand that we’ve recognized since our middle school days. We needed to know how it stacked up.

Size.14 ounces
SPF?No
Core IngredientsBeeswax, sunflower seed oil

Did everyone know that Eos stood for “evolution of smooth?” That was news to us and it gave the brand a whole new meaning in our eyes. Eos created this flavor-forward lip balm to help protect and soothe your lips — but of course. But beyond that, they specifically made this lip balm for men with sensitive skin and all-day moisture.

The minute you pop the top of this balm, the scent of strawberry sorbet hits your nostrils. It’s noticeable and transportive, for us, to a summer barbeque, that is. If you’re not a big fan of flavor or scent when it comes to your skincare products, you may need to skip it.

We actually enjoyed the flavor along with this lip balm’s thinner and less messy formula. As much as we wanted it to last all day, it did feel like we had to reapply a little more than expected. Now, keep in mind that there is no limit to how much you should apply, but in terms of all-day moisture, we expect 1-2 applications for the most convenience.

Pros

  • Tasty Flavor
  • Perfect for Sensitive Skin
  • Gluten-Free and Cruelty Flee
  • Dermatologist-tested
  • Hypoallergenic

Cons

  • More than two applications needed for the average lips
Vaseline Lip Therapy Mini

BEST VALUE

Vaseline Lip Therapy Mini

Why We Chose It: Because who hasn’t taken a finger full of vaseline to their lips? How could we skip it?

Size.25 ounces
SPF?No
Core IngredientsPetroleum jelly

We like to think of Vaseline as the ancestor of lip balm. It’s made with their Vaseline® Jelly that certainly prevents dry lips and locks in moisture. You also finish off with a nice, natural-looking gloss, like two little doughnuts fresh off the glazing table.

This gives us memories of the old tub of Vaseline that would live in random rooms of your childhood home. Anytime anything was dry, you dipped into a bit of that jelly. You know what? It works. It’s a bit of a messier application, but Vaseline does do what it’s supposed to for your lips. It was one of the best lip balms back then, it’s one of the best now, and we’re willing to bet this will still be one of the best lip balms when we’re gone (barring an inevitable petroleum crisis).

Pros

  • Long-lasting
  • Affordable
  • Great for stocking around the house, car, and work

Cons

  • Messy application
Kiehl’s LIP BALM #1

LIGHTEST-FEELING FORMULA

Kiehl’s LIP BALM #1

Why We Chose It: This was another men’s grooming staple brand with a lip balm we wanted to try after using so many of their products.

Size.5 ounces
SPF?No
Core IngredientsAloe vera, squalane

Kiehl’s developed this lip balm as a fragrance-free formula to help soothe and smooth dry lips. Kiehl’s incorporates Squalane, which is derived from olives and absorbs into the skin to keep it soft and supple. Their formula was noticeably light and easy to apply.

We’ve loved a lot of what we’ve tried from Kiehl’s. Their products have always performed well, be it a face wash, an under-eye cream, or a face mask, without being too extravagant, and the same stands for their lip balm. This lip balm reminded us of a light Vaseline-like formula providing the same benefits but with less thickness and mess.

Pros

  • Light Formula
  • Long-Lasting
  • Easy to add to your daily routine

Cons

  • Not proven to be cruelty-free
(Malin + Goetz) Mojito Lip Moisturizer

MOST UNIQUE FLAVOR

(Malin + Goetz) Mojito Lip Moisturizer

Why We Chose It: Malin + Goetz came recommended to us by friends of the SPY team and we were eager to try the Mojito flavor.

Size.3 ounces
SPF?No
Core IngredientsFatty acid blend

(Malin + Goetz) was one of the most unique lip balms we tried for this review. It’s a gel base, making it slightly more viscous than the others we tried, and they’ve incorporated fatty acids to help nourish and condition lips. But get this — it tastes like a fresh mojito.

The mojito flavor is a unique twist. It’s a bit more limey than mojito-y, but either way, that just isn’t something our team is used to in lip care. Other than the flavor, the lip balm was quite smooth.

The gel formula definitely makes it easy to apply and easily coats your lips. We enjoyed doing the usual lip smack during our testing to spread it and will definitely continue to explore the mojito flavor.

Pros

  • Smooth application
  • Easy to apply
  • Lasts for several hours
  • Made in US

Cons

  • Some people don’t like mojitos, somehow
WELEDA Everon Lip Balm

SMOOTHEST APPLICATION

WELEDA Everon Lip Balm

Why We Chose It: WELEDA packed this lip balm with all-natural ingredients.

Size.17 ounces
SPF?No
Core IngredientsJojoba oil

WELEDA formulated their mostly natural lip balm with jojoba oil, rose extract, shea butter, and a touch of beeswax to help nourish lips. When applying the lip balm, we found notes of vanilla and rose essential oils and enjoyed the waxy finish. The immediate sensation was very restorative.

The SPY team loved the initial feeling of this lip balm. It felt like we were going to be set for the whole day. Unfortunately, it did feel like we had to reapply every hour or so. Maybe it’s because we fell in love with the initial sensation, but the dry lip thing started to happen again shortly after initial use. It could be because we just wanted more — the jury’s still out.

The slight flavor and scent did remind us of rose and honey. That was a pleasant experience and we’d keep this in our bags just to continue experiencing that first touch.

Pros

  • Great scent and flavor
  • Initial feel and application
  • Nourishing ingredients

Cons

  • Effective duration
La Mer The Lip Balm

MOST LUXE

La Mer The Lip Balm

Why We Chose It: Because it’s La Mer, duh. We had to try the high-end lip balm.

Size.32 ounces
SPF?No
Core IngredientsMiracle Broth™

Okay — if you’re not familiar with La Mer, you should know that it’s like the Gucci of skincare. Their lip balm is formulated with what they have coined as their Miracle Broth™, and notably, without a lot of chemicals and other ingredients that we can’t pronounce. That’s great, we loved that.

The Miracle Broth™ incorporates ingredients like sea kelp, vitamins and minerals, and other nutrients to bring skin back to a healthy state. The broth they use undergoes a fermentation process to unlock its best properties. As a whole, our team was kind of lost amidst the high-end sales pitch for the broth, but we loved how it made our lips feel, so we’ll take it.

At this price point, the experience was everything you would think. The La Mer lip balm is velvety and makes your lips feel extravagant with a hint of mint. It did require a finger application, which can get messy. Luckily, it’s fairly thick so you can make it last.

To be totally honest, we’d dunk our lips in a vat of this stuff. It’s everything we would want in a luxury lip balm. One of SPY’s Editors has gone as far to say that he’s gone to bed with split lips and woken up with brand new ones in the dead of a dry Boston January.

Pros

  • Velvet texture
  • A pleasing hint of mint
  • Long-lasting
  • Lip balm for sensitive skin

Cons

  • High Price point
  • Finger application
Glossier Balm Dotcom Mint Flavor

MOST NOTICEABLE (IN A GOOD WAY)

Glossier Balm Dotcom

Why We Chose It: Couldn’t help but love the name balm dotcom, so we had to try it.

Size.5 ounces
SPF?No
Core IngredientsAntioxidants, natural emollients

Glossier is another brand that has been in the skincare game for quite some time. We were excited to test out the mint balm dotcom on a good recommendation. Their lip balm uniquely doubles as a skin salve to help heal damaged skin. The dense waxy formula helps keep the lip balm in place and the unique flavors make it one of the most noticeable sensations when applied.

We loved the mint flavor. And we have to agree with the brand when they say “balm (bomb) dotcom,” they’re not kidding. It reminded us of mint chocolate chips, which most of us really loved. We noticed our lips staying moist and enjoyably waxy for the majority of the day.

Pros

  • Great flavor options
  • Enjoyable texture
  • Skin healing properties

Cons

  • Higher price point

How We Determined the Best Lip Balm

We spent several weeks testing out each lip balm for men who are looking for relief by adding them to our daily skincare routines. It usually takes 1-2 days of testing skincare products to register any new effects they have on the skin. Luckily, with lip balm, the effects are immediately noticeable. We’ll continue testing and updating our list of the best lip balms.

To determine which were worthy of being called the best lip balms, these are the factors we sought:

Assortment of Best Lip Balms for Men 3
A selection of lip balms tested by SPY for this review.

Chemicals – Each lip balm scored higher for ingredients that DID NOT make it into the formula. Our team prefers natural products over the bad stuff, as you should as well. We do keep in mind that some chemicals and manufactured products are required to preserve lip balms.

Animal Friendly – We scored higher for lip balms that didn’t use animal products and are cruelty-free. In this case, many of the lip balms used beeswax, but most companies source it in a way that does not harm or endanger bees. Lanolin is also a common animal product that helps give balms their texture and benefits.

Sun Protection – Because sun protection is key to protecting your skin and lips, we scored products with built-in SPF higher.

Number of Applications – While most lip balms advise consumers to apply as needed without a limit, we did rank those that didn’t require constant reapplication with higher scores. We found that the best performers only needed one to two applications throughout the day to keep lips from getting too dry.

Why Trust SPY When Choosing the Best Lip Balm

Finding effective skincare products is what SPY does best. We put in the time to research what’s available online and in-person looking for the best new and familiar brands to see if the reviews are legit.

You can also take comfort in knowing that SPY has male reviewers on the team who actually care about their skin and lips and prefer not to walk around all crusty. We’re also not afraid to be truthful because we want to make sure the best lip balms make it into your skincare routines and daily carries.

Other than lip balms, SPY has reviewed every other vertical in the men’s grooming space. Recently, we reviewed the best moisturizers for men, the best beard balms, and even the best skincare brands, so you can build a comprehensive skincare routine.

In the age of social media and the internet, the definition of being a creator, let alone owning your own business, looks different than it ever has. Now, you don’t need a studio, apprenticeship, brand-new equipment, or even much prior experience to get started. Instead, starting is just a matter of clicking the record button. The hard part, however, is maintaining and growing that kind of business, but that’s a whole other story.

Hi, I’m David, and I’m a professional digital content creator. Here’s everything I used to get to where I am today.

David in an office chair. Creating content from an office set up in an urban location
David in an office chair, creating content in an urban city setting

If you’ve been curious about how full-time creators could possibly earn a liveable salary, or are interested in doing this yourself, go on this journey with me. I’ll tell you how I became a full-time content creator and what I use to remain a full-time content creator/digital freelancer. We’ll cover everything from hardware and software to community resources and mental health tools. By the end of this, I hope you have a genuine picture of what this line of work entails.

P.S. I hate it when some creators in the space make it look like they’re giving you genuine info but end up gatekeeping why they use what they use and how they use it. Don’t worry about that here, I don’t even have gates to keep.

First: How I Became a Full-Time Content Creator

Stroll with me down memory lane, if only to establish the fact that I didn’t fall into full-time content creation. It’s easy to see big creators or influencers who have tons of followers and think they went viral overnight and the rest is sort of a fairytale.

That also creates the unrealistic expectation that it takes virality and popularity to make content creation a full-time career. We’ll get to that, but just know that’s not how it works for everyone.

In 2019 I was stuck in a job that I hated, but wasn’t ready to admit that to myself yet. I moved positions internally but continued to find myself right back in the same miserable place. I’d drive to work listening to mental health podcasts or belting sad ballads to prep for the day ahead. Not exactly glamorous.

I was a project engineer for a commercial contractor (I made sure buildings got built to specification). I liked the technical and creative problem-solving aspect, but I just couldn’t stay engaged in the work. That fall, I remember sitting in my final career review getting coaxed into climbing up the corporate ladder.

I looked around the room and saw a bunch of unhappy people and thought to myself: There’s no way I want to be that.

David’s first content style

Luckily (and thank you for bearing with me), at this point I had started an Instagram account (@threadability) that had been running for just over a year. I was regularly posting content in my free time and getting some traction with brands as a part-time content creator.

Was it covering my bills? Def not. Was I ready to take a risk and become a full-time creator rather than get stuck in something I hated for the rest of my foreseeable future? Definitely.

So I made the decision to quit. Now, I did have a business partner and savings that helped me get started. I basically lived off my own savings and a bit of investment for a year before I made money moves. Keep in mind this all started on February 14, 2020 — I’m pretty sure you know what was about to happen.

Defining a Content Creator vs. Digital Freelancer

My first thought when I quit my job was “how do I convince brands to pay me to make content so that I can live my life comfortably?” I was ready to be strapped for cash, but I wasn’t trying to be entirely spent. The only thing I knew at the time was that full-time content creation and influencing meant growing and getting paid to post.

I set my sights on that. Let me tell you, that wasn’t easy. I blew through savings quickly trying to invest in marketing for my own services and creating content. I was quickly realizing that I wouldn’t be able to make rent payments by the end of that year.

At a low point, I got some really good advice: “being in an industry doesn’t always have to look the one way you thought it should.”

What they meant was I could be a content creator that made a living outside of just posting content on my own social media. It meant I could take some control back.

It was time to get flexible. That’s when I went from influencer/content creator to digital freelancer and social media consultant.

It’s really easy to think that content creators only create content for themselves. The reality is that everyone needs content. Instead of just focusing on myself, I sought out clients that needed content or consultation for their businesses.

David posing in front of a camera mounted on a tripod as a full-time content creator
David posing in front of a camera on a tripod

The thing that separates influencers/content creators from digital freelancers is the service they provide to their clients. I pivoted to provide content to clients for marketing purposes, managing their social media content and strategy, and now even managing talent.

So what does a content creator do? They create content. What does a digital freelancer do? They work in the digital space to provide their clients with anything they might need to support their business. I call myself a “digital content concierge” now. It’s got a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?

What Hardware Tools Do You Need as A Full-Time Content Creator?

I still consider myself a content creator, but that folds into my overall job as a digital concierge for my clients. That flexibility, along with the products I’m sharing down below, helped me maintain my career for three full years.

I’m covering hardware and software products that helped me become and stay a full-time content creator as well as some less tangible things that I could not do without.

So now, let’s get into the good stuff. If you’re wondering how to become a content creator, these are the basic, fundamental tools you’ll need to get started. Each of these items helped me become and stay a full-time content creator as well as some less tangible things that I could not do without.

Any Old Smartphone Will Do

Before you roll your eyes, please note that you really can start with any old, even cheap smartphone — doesn’t have to be the very best smartphone available. I also don’t mean to sound like every “social media expert” telling you that you can just start with your phone, but the reality is that I did start creating content on the weekends in my apartment with only a phone.

After moving the coffee table out of the way in my tiny studio apartment, I’d break out my old iPhone and snap flat-lay photos of the outfits I thought were cool at the time. I had to pray that the light was right.

Then, I’d use mobile editing apps (I’ll go through my favorites later on) to post the content on IG.

And you know what? I got my first gig working with just that old iPhone 8S.

Obviously, an iPhone 14 Pro Max with the bells and whistles has way more power than what I was using when I first started, but I could honestly get away with just using this as my equipment as a full-time content creator.

I’ve created full videos for campaigns with just my smartphone. Remember, though, that I upgraded to this smartphone because I was ready — you don’t have to spend a ton if you’re not ready.

You can be a full-time content creator and freelancer without having a big budget to invest in brand-new equipment. I’m a firm believer in starting with what you have before spending a ton to upgrade.

I started upgrading my equipment in my third year of being a full-time freelancer. There’s no rush here.

A MacBook/iMac or Reliable Laptop/PC

David using a MacBook to create content

FOR EDITING/GRAPHIC DESIGN

Apple 2021 MacBook Pro (14-inch, M1 Pro chip)

I switch between my MacBook Pro and an iMac but if you prefer a MacBook alternative, that’s okay too. I like a big screen on my desk and the processing power of an iMac for video editing. As a full-time content creator, video editing is a big part of my work. Size matters a little bit here for me, I like the ease of having the large display in front of me to see what I’m working with.

I also like editing my photos on a Macbook. I use a 14” M1 with 2 TB storage. I had a bad experience with an old laptop taking seven hours to export a video and decided to supe up with one of the best laptops when it was time to upgrade.

I keep my photo editing on my laptop because it’s how I started and it’s what I know. It also makes it easy to travel with my work and stay productive even when I’m not home.

The bottom line is that you need a computer with decent processing power. If you’re moving editing off your mobile device, consider a computer that has processing and editing power to handle keeping multiple tabs open and rendering a video at the same time. Those are the places to splurge when customizing your computer.

You don’t have to sell your soul to Apple, but I found it easier to have all my tech run a similar OS.

Pro Tip: Apple offer refurbished computers and trade-in credit. That’s how I got my first MacBook.

A Professional Mirrorless or DSLR Camera

Canon EOS R Body

YOUR MAIN MONEY MAKER

Canon EOS R

At this point in my career, I upgraded to a Canon EOS R with a 24-70mm Canon lens, the best mirrorless camera combo for my business. It’s definitely pricier than the first camera I started with, but I still didn’t go top-of-the-line.

I got my first starter Canon EOS DSLR Camera after almost a year of using my phone. Like I said before, as it turns out you don’t need the best equipment right out of the gate to become a full-time content creator. I wanted to make sure I could make a commitment to creating content first.

I started by walking into Best Buy and asking for a camera that could handle simple photoshoots. I had the stock lens and a mid-range 50mm lens. That held me for two years as I learned more about photography.

Your best work comes from your vision and what you can make as a creator, not just the equipment you use. I upgraded because I was ready for crisper quality in photos and video, which is what my clients wanted for me.

I stuck with Canon because it was the first thing I used, the operating system I learned, and I didn’t want to make a switch. I love the color quality of photos with Canon. I chose the 24-70 mm lens because as a full-time content creator, I need versatility. I can take this combo with me everywhere I go to create content.

If your business is growing, investing in equipment is a natural part of the process. When you invest in your equipment, you can charge more for your work. Clients pay a premium for higher-quality content.

So, while it’s not necessary just to get started, as you continue to create content full-time, you’ll find yourself wanting to naturally level up your equipment and invest in your own business. It’s ok to let that happen over time. Like Apple products, many stores offer crazy deals on gently used camera equipment which can help you get better gear for cheap.

A Trustworthy External Hard Drive

Western Digital 2TB Hard Drive for full-time content Creators

CONTENT STORAGE

Western Digital My Passport for Mac

I keep hard drives like they’re our childhood Pokemon cards. I got the whole collection.

I’m a paranoid person, but if you ask anybody who’s lost content from a photoshoot, it’s justified. So even though I’ve upgraded my computers to have plenty of storage, I still think everything will crash and I’ll lose it all.

I use Western Digital because they make the best external hard drives. They’ve been the most reliable for me and I appreciate how easily compatible they are with MacOS. They come in a variety of sizes. I mostly stick to 2TB.

External hard drives are perfect for full-time content creators who travel or work remotely. You can have everything you need without lugging around a full computer tower.

I keep a lot of content as references and examples of previous work with future clients. I like being able to easily access the content.

A Basic, But Decent Lighting Set-Up

Inkeltech Ring Light for content creators

CONTROL IS KEY

Inkeltech Ring Light

This needs to be in every full-time content creator starter pack.

The best ring lights provide great light for short-form video, video calls, and anything that requires just a little more light than a big window can provide. I know a lot of us had that collective “am I really doing this?” when we first bought ring lights, but I use this every day.

I’ve had mine since 2020 (before everyone got one for Zoom calls) and have even brought it with me on set when I’m working with clients. The Inkeltech ring light folds up nicely and has color temperature settings that come in handy when creating content in different settings. It’s perfect if you’re starting out as a full-time content creator and aren’t ready to buy expensive lighting equipment.

A Strong Tripod

David posing using the Viciall 80" tripod

I STAN THIS STAND

VICIALL 80-inch Tripod

This tripod easily supports the weight of a full camera and lens combo as well as your smartphone.

If you’re a solo creator or one who needs a lot of still shots in the same position, you’ll need a tripod. I originally needed one of the best tripods because I was shooting my own portraits.

I love the Viciall TriPod because it’s sturdy enough to hold the weight of my camera with the thick 24-70 mm lens. I’ve seen flimsy tripods topple with the weight of a camera, and after investing in my equipment, I never wanted to be that guy.

If you’re looking for more cost-effective options, look for smaller tripods that are built for phones and have flexible legs that can wrap around pipes, poles, etc. These are great for full-time creators who stick to their phones.

A Clear Wireless Microphone

Snapshot of David recording a video using the Rode Wireless Go Mic II

SOUND IS CRITICAL

RODE Wireless Wireless Go II Microphones

These RODE Mics are perfectly compact and are of great quality for their size.

If you want to get more into video content, using one of the best wireless mic kits makes life easier. I purchased these mics when I was in my YouTube phase. I really love the sound quality you get without sacrificing too much space in your camera bag.

I now use them for short-form videos in which I speak in the video rather than in a voiceover. I also use them when filming other videos for clients. The sound comes out crispy and instantly makes your videos sound more professional.

As I mentioned before, I’ve become flexible with the content gigs I take on as a full-time freelance content creator, and sometimes that means just playing videographer for clients. These have come in real handy in those moments.

A Travel Bag to Protect Your Gear

Brevite Backpack for full-time content creators

SAFETY FIRST

The Brevite Backpack

It’s the perfect compact camera bag for carrying a camera, lenses, and a laptop.

I don’t go anywhere without this bag. When you’re creating content full-time you find yourself bringing your camera, mics, hard drives, and laptop everywhere you go. This is a compact bag that maintains room for all of it.

I travel with this, I bring it to set, and I do everything with this bag. It’s a great intermediate bag between repurposing your old backpack and having a full-blown camera bag.

What Software Tools Do You Need as a Full-Time Content Creator?

Most of the software tools I use are for editing and creating content. I’m a big fan of tools that help make the whole process smoother. I’m giving you everything from photo/video editing to scheduling tools to help you create full-time.

Mobile Photo Editing Apps for Full-Time Content Creators

Adobe Lightroom Logo

INDUSTRY-STANDARD

Adobe Lightroom (Creative Cloud)

When I first started out, I edited my photos (before video became a lot more popular) on mobile apps. My favorites were Snapseed, Mojo, Picsart, and Adobe Lightroom Mobile. I was able to edit colors and correct my images with each one.

Snapseed and Lightroom specifically let me edit photo content to look professional without having a full desktop setup. They were great for coloring photos and healing any imperfections in them. I fully believe you can make professional-looking content with them.

Mojo has great templates for stories and videos that you can plug into to get great-looking content with minimal effort. I used it all the time to create more dynamic story templates.

Picsart lets you get creative with your photos. I like adding stickers or objects that enhance the content. It’s a great substitute for Photoshop when you’re sticking to your phone.

Mobile Photo and Video Editing Apps for Full-Time Content Creators

As a full-time content creator, editing video is something I do constantly. We’re talking editing for Reels/TikTok, video ad content for clients, IG story content, and so much more. For short-form videos, I like to keep more of my editing on my phone so I can turn them around quickly.

My favorite video editing apps are Splice, Capcut, and Videoleap. Splice is very straightforward. I use it to assemble clips and literally splice videos together.

Capcut and Videoleap have a lot more features that are akin to desktop editing software but without the learning curve. These have been great for incorporating trending features into content for myself and my clients.

Adobe Editing Suite for Full-Time Content Creators

Adobe Creative Cloud Logo

PRO CONTENT PRODUCTION

Adobe Creative Cloud Subscription

I moved into the Adobe Creative Cloud, using mostly Lightroom, Photoshop, and Premier Pro as I leveled up my equipment. It might just be that I like to work on a big screen because it makes me feel more professional, but I’ve been a loyal fan of the software.

I do appreciate the functionality that comes with editing in each of these. I can tweak colors in photos and manipulate them in Photoshop to help bring my creativity to life. I know that sounds cheesy, but I’ve gotten to experiment a lot more on a computer than I could with pinching and pressing features on an app.

I also really appreciate how Adobe centers its products around creators. They offer tutorials for beginners. Those coupled with YouTube videos helped me learn how to create content full-time. It took me a few years to get to a place where I can appreciate my skills, but it was easy to learn!

Canva for Full-Time Content Creators

EASY GRAPHIC DESIGN

Canva Monthly Subscription

Canva feels like a life hack for anyone in the creative industry. It makes graphic design, post design, and so much more accessible without having to teach yourself new, technical Adobe software. I love that it’s as easy as drag and drop.

I started with Canva when I needed to create my first media kit and I was so lost with how to even start in Photoshop. Now, I use this for client presentations, invoice design, client post design, and so much more.

Epidemic Sound for Full-Time Creators

FIND YOUR SOUNDS

Epidemic Sound Royalty-Free Music

Epidemic Sound is great for creators who need to at commercial-free music to their own content and the content they sell to clients. Depending on the membership level you purchase, you have access to all kinds of music for your video content that isn’t going to get stricken for copyright infringement.

I started using Epidemic Sound for content partnerships that couldn’t use commercial music. Now, I use it for most content that I make for clients so they don’t have to worry about issues getting flagged for music rights.

Later for Full-Time Creators

Inevitably, as a full-time creator, you’re going to need to find ways to save time. Having a post scheduler is a big time-saver.

I’ve tried a few platforms but stuck with Later. They offer a lot of unique features including scheduling across multiple platforms, bio link features, and great IG compatibility. They regularly publish helpful blogs that capture tips for social media strategy and trending topics.

They make it really easy to schedule multiple clients at the same time if you’re managing content for more than one entity.

Build Your Own Community of Creators and Supporters

This is far less tangible, but I don’t think I could stay a full-time creator without the help of a supportive community of other creators, marketers, and industry experts. The unique thing about this kind of work is that it can be isolating.

Since we make content on our own, usually from our own homes and studios, it can feel like no one understand what we do and how we do it. The other beautiful part about the content creator/influencer industry is that you can connect with people without having to meet them in person.

David with other full-time content creators

Invest in relationships with other creators. Bounce ideas off each other, discuss your struggles, and celebrate your wins together. The community I’ve kept around me helped me stay sane when I wasn’t sure how to keep my own business afloat.

I was in so much need that I ended up moving to NYC to be closer to a community of creators that understood me.

Take Care of your Mental Health as A Full-Time Creator

I’m not in the business of telling people to see a therapist, but I don’t think I’d be able to stay a full-time digital freelancer/creator without focusing on my mental health.

The creator industry puts you up against comparison, uncertainty, and a lot of discomfort. It’s a lot of what comes with turning your passion into a career.

I’ve been able to work through comparison syndrome that’s almost inevitable as a full-time content creator and focus on my own goals and confidence development.

The SPY team has set out to find the best skincare products for men, and today we’re sharing the best men’s face moisturizers for every skin type. Over the years, the SPY team has tested dozens of moisturizers, from cheap drugstore brands to luxe Kiehl’s products, and we wanted to present guys with the very best men’s face moisturizers for 2022.

We know that a lot of guys are developing a skincare routine for the first time, and whenever SPY editors have consulted dermatologists on the most important skincare products, a good moisturizer is always on the list (preferably with SPF protection, but we’ll get to that later). Even if you only want to use a couple of basic products, face moisturizers for men deserve a place in your routine.

As great as it is to be a guy who doesn’t need a lot of products to maintain their appearance, not all of us got the “age like fine wine” genes. And as it turns out, even if you did, your skin is probably still pretty thirsty. Your skin actually needs moisture and hydration to stay fresh, balanced, and healthy — it isn’t all for vanity.

SPY is here to help you choose the most essential grooming products, including body wash, face masks, and the best men’s moisturizer for your skin. For reference, the SPY team generally likes to keep our overall skincare routine pretty simple. Too many steps make us feel like we’re doing homework. With that in mind, we chose face moisturizers that could easily be incorporated into your current regimen

So after testing dozens of moisturizers, we’ve come up with our rankings for the 11 best men’s moisturizers you can get right now.

Why Should Guys Moisturize?

Remember, your skin isn’t just for looks, it’s a barrier. It’s your first line of defense against bacteria and potential infection. We’re not trying to scare you, but some of us need to remember that skincare is about your health and not your selfies.

According to board-certified multi-specialist physician Dr.Azza Halim, “Moisturizing the skin helps keep skin supple, maintains healthy skin barrier in order to minimize environmental damage, and premature aging.”

There are three steps to consider when it comes to having a complete skincare routine: washing/cleansing, hydrating/moisturizing, and protecting with SPF. These all help your skin stay free of bacteria and function the way it should.

Best Moisturizers for men on shower bench
Some of the best men’s moisturizers tested for this review.

Dry, unmoisturized skin cracks and gets irritated. Moisturized skin, however, keeps you looking fresh. Your face, neck, and ear skin cells maintain a shorter life cycle, constantly drying, shedding, and replacing themselves. That constant turnover makes those areas more vulnerable to excessive dryness and aging. When you start noticing signs of aging, it might be because your skin isn’t functioning like it’s supposed to.

The ultimate goal here is balance. Yes, that iridescent skin glow that everyone obsesses over is really nice to look at, but it’s also a sign of healthy skin that’s been taken care of. Bottom line — don’t treat your face skin like the skin on your elbows. While you’re at it, maybe throw one of the best men’s moisturizers there too.

Recently, we had the opportunity to speak with Alicia Zalka, MD, Board Certified Dermatologist, Associate Clinical Professor of Dermatology at Yale University School of Medicine, and Founder of Surface Deep. We asked Dr. Zalka our burning questions about skincare, especially regarding sun exposure, the best face moisturizer for men, and SPF protection.

Below, you’ll find our top recommendations for men’s face moisturizers, as well as some additional insight from Dr. Zallka on whether or not you really need moisturizers with SPF protection.

Picking the Best Face Moisturizer for Men

Ultimately, the answer to this question depends on your skin type, budget, and skincare habits. Dr. Azza Halim breaks it down by skin type:

  • “Oily skin still needs moisturizer after cleansing to properly balance sebum production, yet one should look for a water-based moisturizer to maintain moisture balance along with hydration and non-comedogenic.”
  • “Combination skin is a bit trickier as it has areas of dry and oily “T-zone”, yet for this, one should also use a water-based moisturizer [to] address moisture, hydration and lipid balance without being too heavy.”
  • “Dry skin is in need of heavier moisturizer that should be oil-based to help seal in moisture, and restore lipid balance and hydration. [It] should contain hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides.”

To help you out, we’ve gathered the best face moisturizer for men with every skin type and preference. Every single face moisturizer featured in this article has been tested by a member of the SPY grooming team, and you’ll find many of the products below in our own medicine cabinets.

To help you out, we’ve rounded up the best face moisturizers for men, including options with and without SPF. These range from premium products with all-natural ingredients to drug store mainstays. Keep scrolling to learn more about how we test grooming products like face moisturizers.

Why It’s the Best: It’s affordable, easy to apply, and leaves skin feeling moisturized all day without having to reapply 1-2 hours later because your skin feels dry again.

  • 3.0-ounce
  • Formulated with Aloe Vera, Ginseng, and Blue Aglae
  • Silicone free

Bravo Sierra Face Moisturizer lives up to its tactical name. It’s a lightweight composition that leaves out parabens, silicones, sulfates, and any animal byproducts. Bravo Sierra field tests its products with members of the U.S. Military and continues to improve its formulas based on their feedback.

To be honest, we’re pretty skeptical of men’s skincare products that sound ultra-masculine, but then Bravo Sierra face moisturizer backed it up with performance. It scored the highest in nearly all of our testing categories. There’s a mild scent, but not enough to deter and it’s not too flowery either. It’s like a nice aftershave or cologne. It’s not too thick and didn’t leave any residue behind. We’d gladly keep a tube of this face moisturizer at home as well as in a travel bag. In terms of the best face moisturizer for men, we were utterly impressed.

Pros

  • Lightweight formula
  • Easy to apply
  • No greasy residue

Cons

  • Doesn’t double as an SPF

Why We Chose It: Easy application, mild scent, smooth texture, and a built-in SPF make this a powerhouse moisturizer.

  • 3.3-ounce, more available
  • SPF 20
  • Vegan and cruelty-free

Jack Black gives us a moisturizer made with certified organic ingredients that looks and feels like a premium skincare product. They’ve formulated their version of a face moisturizer with blue algae and sea parsley to deliver more vitamins and minerals that help keep your skin soft and supple.

We’re big fans. First, the 3.3 fl oz bottle offers a pump mechanism, and something about that easy dispensability makes us want to use it more. We appreciate a moisturizer with SPF, especially if you’re someone who constantly forgets that skincare step before rushing out the door in the morning. It’s even better because the SPF doesn’t give this moisturizer a greasy consistency.

The texture is just perfect: not too runny so you have to catch it in your hands before it drips off your cheeks and not so thick that it’s unspreadable. The scent is mild and dissipates quickly.

Pros

  • Doubles as sunblock
  • A mild scent that feels fresh
  • Skin-soothing

Cons

  • 3.3 Fl oz and larger sizes get pricey
  • SPF 20 only offers mild sun protection

Why We Chose It: Kiehl’s has been a major player in the skincare and grooming space for men. Kiehl’s moisturizer always comes heavily recommended among our peers.

  • 1.7-ounce
  • Squalane and Glycerin
  • Balances skin’s moisture levels

Kiehl’s developed this moisturizer to do more than just moisturize skin, it helps strengthen your skin barrier and helps your skin retain more moisture for softer skin. Squalane and Glycerin are the two key ingredients to protect and restore skin. They developed this for all skin tones and types, including sensitive skin.

This was by far the lightest feeling moisturizer we tested. Kiehl’s lives up to its claims for long-lasting moisturization and protecting our skin. We also appreciate a fragrance-free product. We’d rather have something that’s working and not just smelling like it is.

Pros

  • Works on dryer skin
  • Lasts all-day
  • Fragrance-free

Cons

  • Pricier per ounce

Why We Chose It: Another one of the best moisturizers for men with natural ingredients at a very affordable price.

  • 3.3-ounce
  • Formulated with Aloe Vera, Camelina Oil, and Green Tea
  • Cruelty-free

Bulldog wants to be your loyal skincare companion; man’s face’s best friend. They’ve created one of the best men’s moisturizers using natural ingredients like aloe vera, camelina oil, and green tea to help men’s skin get the moisture it deserves without any of the greasiness.

We can definitely tell Bulldog is thinking about how this moisturizer feels on our skin. It’s light and smooth. The aloe is at play with a soothing sensation after application. The scent reminds us of an upscale spa, which never disappoints when you’re finishing up your morning skincare routine.

Bulldog’s moisturizer lasted all day (without feeling like it was there all day) and left the skin feeling refreshed. We can see why loyalty is a part of their branding.

Pros

  • Light and quick-absorbing
  • Non-greasy
  • Skin-soothing

Cons

  • The scent is powerful if you’re used to scent-free
Neutrogena Hydro Boost Face Moisturizer with Hyaluronic Acid

EASIEST STARTER

5. Neutrogena Hydro Boost Face Moisturizer with Hyaluronic Acid

Why We Chose It: Neutrogena is a staple name in over-the-counter skincare products.

  • 1.7-ounce
  • Hyaluronic Acid
  • Non-comedogenic

Neutrogena brings us an oil-free moisturizer with hyaluronic acid. If you’re not familiar, hyaluronic acid is a hydrator that is normally found in the skin. It binds to water and basically allows your skin to retain more and stay supple.

Neutrogena gives us the best face moisturizer for men who hate that heavy feeling on their skin. In fact, the consistency is actually a bit looser than other gel-based moisturizers. They say it quenches dry skin and we have to agree based on our testing. It was like dunking your face in the perfect temperature water and keeping it there all day. Sometimes your skin needs that quench.

Pros

  • The light, gel texture
  • Easy to apply
  • The accessible price point for skincare newcomers

Cons

  • Silent on vegan and cruelty-free practices

Why We Chose It: Tiktok told us to and they weren’t wrong about the value and easy application.

  • 12-ounce
  • Fragrance-Free
  • Non-Comedogenic (won’t clog pores)

CeraVe uses a formula that incorporates hyaluronic acid and ceramides to help rebuild your skin barrier, which is why we want to moisturize our skin in the first place. This is perfect for normal to dry skin and since it’s safe for your face, you can use it as an all-over body lotion.

CeraVe also uses MVE Delivery Technology for controlled release throughout the day. While we couldn’t feel an exact timed release throughout the day, there was no dry feeling by the afternoon.

Something about reaching into a personal tub of CeraVe brings us comfort. It’s giving “I put this on everything” vibes. Truthfully, we would. It’s easy to access and use.

The texture is rich and smooth. There’s no stickiness and we got the moisturization our skin craved after a typical morning shower. Best of all, the cream wasn’t heavy and didn’t feel like it was clogging pores.

Pros

  • Light Weight
  • Long-lasting
  • Easy to apply

Cons

  • Not confirmed to be vegan or cruelty-free
Cardon Daily SPF + Moisturizer + Cardon Hydro Boost Gel Moisturizer

BEST COMBO

7. Cardon Daily SPF + Moisturizer + Cardon Hydro Boost Gel Moisturizer

Why We Chose It: Cardon is one of the newcomers on this list but impressed us with cactus-based products that easily fit into our skincare routines.

  • 1.2 and 1.7-ounce
  • SPF 30
  • Infused with Cactus Extract

Cardon’s founders started their business by asking their business school peers (the guys that is) about skincare and SPF protection. With their knowledge of Korean skincare and beauty, they set off to create the SPF + Moisturizer first, followed by a full line for men that is completely performance-driven.

We’re always fans of a combo moisturizer and SPF. If you take the extra steps out of a routine, you’re more likely to keep doing the routine. The Cardon SPF + Moisturizer feels more like a moisturizer than a sunscreen. There’s no greasiness and you can barely tell it’s there aside from a slight upscale sunscreen scent. That is, it doesn’t smell like summer weekend pool sunscreen, you know the stuff.

The Hydro Boost Gel Moisturizer can stand on its own as well. The gel base gives it a consistency that’s easy to work into the skin. There’s a light and refreshing feel after application that must be due to the cactus extract.

Pros

  • SPF is light and broad spectrum
  • Gel moisturizer soothes and moisturizes
  • Both last all day without reapplication

Cons

  • The SPF + Moisturizer takes effort to dispense
  • The duo prices are a bit high
Atwater Skincare Moisturizer for Oily Skin

BEST FOR OILY SKIN

8. Atwater Skincare Moisturizer

Full Review: I Tried the new Atwater Skincare Line

Why We Chose It: It came highly recommended as the best moisturizer for oily skin.

  • 3.4-ounce
  • Oil-free
  • Vegan and Cruelty-Free

Atwater is a new skincare brand, and the company developed this face moisturizer specifically for oily and combination skin. If you’ve got either type, most moisturizer generally makes things greasier. Atwater developed a lightweight solution to deliver moisture that oily skin still needs without clogging pores and making more of a mess. Their online reviews are testaments to that success.

Our product tester personally experiences the effects of combination skin. Sometimes his skin is dry and other times it oils up to a bright sheen, and he found that the consistency of Atwater’s facial moisturizer is great for combination skin types. Just tfhick enough to act like a great face moisturizer, but not so loose that it’s dripping while it’s applied.

We’d like to see the floral scent drop down a few ticks. We prefer a product that is mild in scent or has none at all. However, if you’re in need of a moisturizer for oily skin, don’t let scent stop you — it works very well.

Pros

  • Workable consistency
  • Smooth texture
  • Lightweight

Cons

  • Powerful Scent
Blu Atlas Face Moisturizer

BEST SPLURGE

9. Blu Atlas Face Moisturizer

Why We Chose It: We wanted to see what a moisturizer made in NYC was all about.

  • 2.0-ounce
  • Vitamin C and Seaweed Extract
  • Anti-Aging Formula

Blu Atlas has created one of the best anti-aging face moisturizers that delivers moisture and hydration to your skin by way of some of their key ingredients including Vitamin C, Seaweed Extract, and Mango Seed Butter. Together, these ingredients work to protect your skin from irritants like sunlight and pollution as well as regulate and maintain oil production.

These ingredients also work together to provide you with a luxe face moisturizing experience. The consistency reminds us of whipped butter and it sort of feels the same way as you work it into your skin. Not in a bad way, though — whipped butter is great. This product feels expensive and it leaves your skin feeling velvety without the heaviness of some thicker products. This is something you keep on the counter to impress your friends. That’s why it got our most luxe ranking.

Pros

  • Texture and application
  • Pleasant scent
  • Lasts all day

Cons

  • Pricier per ounce
Humanrace Ozone Face Protection Daily Moisturizer

CLEANEST SPECS

10. Humanrace Ozone Face Protection Daily Moisturizer

Why We Chose It: One of the cleanest formulas developed under the supervision of Pharrell Williams.

  • 1.8-ounce
  • SPF 30
  • 15% Zinx Oxide

Humanrace offers a broad-spectrum sunscreen and daily moisturizer in this product. Humanrace’s mission is to help everyone take better care of themselves by developing clean products to help them do it. Humanrace has been one of the more hyped celebrity skincare brands and we were very excited to try it.

The product design, the specs, and Pharell Williams made us very excited to get our hands on the bottle. After that, things took a slight turn. The product definitely feels more like sunscreen. It’s thicker and takes some effort to rub all the way in. We noticed residue left behind in beard hair after doing what seemed like a good job of applying.

We could feel the product left on the skin, like a kid who unwillingly just got slathered in sunblock. That being said, the ingredients and the makeup of the product definitely impressed us. We’d use this purely as a sunblock on a heavy outdoor day.

Pros

  • Clean ingredients
  • Beautiful design
  • Broad spectrum SPF protection

Cons

  • Greasy and leaves residue behind
  • Very expensive

Should You Use a Men’s Face Moisturizer With SPF?

Jack Black Double-Duty Face Moisturizer on bathroom counter

More and more face moisturizers now do double duty as face sunscreen. And not to generalize too much, but most guys probably want to keep skincare as simple as possible. So does that mean the best men’s face moisturizers will also protect your mug from the sun? If you want your face moisturizer to do double duty, then the answer is yes. That’s why a lot of guys opt for face moisturizers with SPF.

Dr. Zalka recommends applying sunscreen to our skin every day. For your face, she specifically recommends products with SPF 30 or higher for maximum protection. If you want to protect your skin from the damaging effects of the sun — and do everything you can to fight premature signs of aging — then applying moisturizers with SPF protection is a must before you step out into the sun. That’s even true during the winter or on cloudy summer days. Dr. Zalka even says, “hazy and cloudy days still allow ultraviolet rays (which are a form of radiation, don’t forget) to be absorbed by your skin.” Meaning, yeah, even if you wake up and the sun isn’t shining, you should still throw on some sunscreen.

On the other hand, moisturizers without SPF are great for wearing after showers and before bed. In fact, that’s a great test if you aren’t sure which type of moisturizer to buy:

  • If you typically apply facial moisturizers in the morning, then you’ll definitely want moisturizers with sunscreen.
  • If you apply moisturizers at night so your skin can recharge while you sleep, then you’ll want to invest in anti-aging moisturizers for men.

How We Chose the Best Face Moisturizer for Men

We spent several weeks adding each moisturizer into our morning routine. It usually takes 1-2 days of testing skincare products to register any new effects they have on the skin. Each product can also take weeks of continuous use to deliver its promised benefits. We’ll continue testing the best face moisturizers for men to keep this review accurate. In terms of scoring, here’s what we considered:

Chemicals Each moisturizer scored higher for every chemical that didn’t make it into the formula. Keep in mind, that some chemicals are necessary for product formulation to preserve products and for them to actually work. Regardless, the best face moisturizer for men has done away with the bad stuff.

Animal Friendly We scored higher for moisturizers that didn’t use animal products or test on animals. In today’s era, we can do without.

Sun Protection Because sun protection is key to protecting your skin, we scored products with built-in SPF higher.

Consistency and Spreadability – Face moisturizers that were easy to use and didn’t leave a greasy after-feel scored higher as well.
