Four of the most popular toilet paper brands — including Charmin and Seventh Generation — tested positive for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (otherwise known as PFAS, fluorinated toxic chemicals, or “forever” chemicals) according to a new report from Environmental Health News.

The agency, in partnership with the environmental wellness blog Mamavation, tested 17 different toilet paper brands in an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-certified lab and found PFAS in four popular waste paper products. PFAS, otherwise known as “forever” chemicals, build up in the body and never break down, and may cause cancer, birth defects, and infertility.

Charmin Ultra Soft Toilet Paper, Seventh Generation 100% Recycled Bath Tissue, Tushy Bamboo Toilet Paper, and Who Gives a Crap Bamboo Toilet Paper all contained levels of fluorine ranging from 10 parts per million (ppm) to 35 ppm. For context, guidelines released by the EPA in 2022 noted that levels as low as 0.004-0.02 ppt can cause adverse health effects.

The PFAS levels in these toilet paper products are low, so replacing them with another brand in your bathroom will do some good, but not a lot. The degree of exposure through the skin is mild compared to, say, in drinking water, which contains PFAS in all 50 states according to an EPA report released in 2022. The chemicals have been found in everything from tap water to nonstick cooking products, so limiting overall exposure is key.

Numerous studies conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) showed that PFAS can absorb through the skin, and a study conducted across schools of public health in the U.S. and Singapore linked them to fertility issues in women.

Can they also affect a man’s ability to conceive? Dr. Justin Houman, Director of Men’s Health at Towers Urology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Towers, explained to SPY that while this new report is concerning, data surrounding PFAS and fertility are limited.

“Research on the effects of PFAS on fertility is ongoing, and while the evidence is not yet fully conclusive, there are concerns regarding potential adverse effects,” said Houman. “Some studies suggest that exposure to high levels of PFAS might be associated with hormonal disruptions which can lead to reproductive system abnormalities. These effects could potentially lead to difficulties with conception and fertility issues.”

He also said many factors impact the degree to which PFAS are absorbed through the skin. “The degree of absorption may vary depending on factors such as the specific PFAS compound, its concentration, and the duration of contact,” said Houman. The amount of time toilet paper is in contact with the skin is quite brief, and surface-level, compared to a piece of fish cooked on a nonstick pan sealed with toxic chemicals, for example.

He also said that toilet paper’s effect on men’s fertility is not an immediate concern.

“While toilet paper may contain trace amounts of PFAS due to its manufacturing process or certain additives, the levels are typically low and may not pose an immediate threat to fertility,” said Houman. “However, it’s crucial to be mindful of potential cumulative exposure to PFAS from multiple sources. As a precautionary measure, individuals concerned about PFAS exposure should opt for products that are certified as PFAS-free or seek alternatives without unnecessary chemical additives.”

The best way to avoid PFAS, based on the information that’s currently available, is to opt for something more eco-friendly and made with fewer chemicals. Bamboo toilet paper is a great alternative. The following options are what SPY editors recommend.

Betterway Bamboo Toilet Paper against white background

Betterway Bamboo Toilet Paper 3 PLY – Eco Friendly, Sustainable Toilet Tissue

Typically, toilet paper made out of eco-friendly materials like bamboo is stiff, thin, and not comfortable to use. Betterway’s toilet paper is designed with three layers and is designed not to irritate sensitive skin.

Repurpose 100 Bamboo Toilet Paper rolls in cardboard box

Repurpose 100% Bamboo Toilet Paper (3 Ply)

This toilet paper is made with FSC-certified bamboo that’s harvested responsibly, and since bamboo regrows in 3-4 months after it’s cut compared to the year plus it can take for a tree to grow, it’s much more sustainable. It also comes in waste-free packaging, making it an even more environmentally-friendly choice.

Cottonelle Ultra Clean Toilet Paper against white background

Cottonelle Ultra Clean Toilet Paper with Active CleaningRipples Texture, Strong Bath Tissue

Avoiding PFAS doesn’t have to mean using only recycled, eco-friendly toilet paper. Mamavation also tested Cottonelle’s products alongside the brands above and did not detect concerning levels of toxic chemicals. This soft, plush option comes with 24 mega rolls per pack (the equivalent of 132 regular rolls) and is septic-safe.

TUSHY Classic 3.0 Bidet Toilet Seat Attachment against blue background

TUSHY Classic 3.0 Bidet Toilet Seat Attachment

Another option for avoiding PFAS in the bathroom is to cut out toilet paper entirely with a bidet. This 3.0 model from Tushy attaches directly to the toilet with no plumbing attachment required, and it has a self-cleaning nozzle that requires minimal maintenance.

Swapping products is a preventative step, but Houman said that any couples experiencing ongoing fertility issues should seek help from a reproductive specialist.

The SPY 2023 Grooming Awards https://spy.com/articles/grooming/hygiene/grooming-awards-1202968314/ https://spy.com/articles/grooming/hygiene/grooming-awards-1202968314/#respond Thu, 20 Jul 2023 21:44:06 +0000 https://spy.com/?p=1202968314 Our editors independently select the products we recommend. We all groom. We lather, swipe, pluck, brush, trim, scrub, brush, swish, and spray. Whether we do so in the airplane lavatory or in a private sanctuary dotted with full bottles of Aesop wonderserums, we all make a bit of an effort and build something resembling a routine.

Routines are great. They are the touchstones of daily life. That said, routines need routine maintenance. Products need to be switched out. New tools need to be switched on.

The men’s grooming space is dynamic. Innovation leads to domination in no time at all. Brands go from obscure to ubiquitous quickly if their goop does what it promises to do – softening beards, curling hair, smoothing skin…. That’s why SPY editors are constantly trying everything from toothbrushes, to floss, to toothpaste to beard trimmers to beard balms to bald head shavers to bath bombs. Every year, we use a lot of horrible, gunky, malfunctioning products and a handful of amazing solutions. The 2023 SPY Grooming Awards is a celebration of outstanding, joyful solutions.

We’ve divided our picks into seven distinct categories: Hair Care, Skincare, Shaving, Hygiene, Dental Care, Head Care (read: stuff for bald dudes), and Indulgences. Each category contains truly exciting new products.

Hair Care

image featuring various haircare products for SPY Grooming Awards 2023

Proper hair care is essential to conserving and caring for locks — whether they’re a source of anxiety, pride, or indifference. For men who aren’t currently in the market for a bald head shaver, we’ve selected our favorite haircare products for achieving clean, smooth, and soft tresses from root to tip.

See the Winners

Skincare

skincare for spy grooming awards 2023

The vast, complex world of skincare has become gargantuan. Sure, every man’s skin is different but the number of must-have products is actually small. A good cleanser, SPF, and moisturizer will get most men 90% of the way there. Everything else is a nice bonus.

Here are our favorite basic products, and our selects for the pampering add-ons that’ll achieve that “dewy bedtime” look your girlfriend nails every night.

See the Winners

Shaving

shaving products for SPY Grooming Awards 2023

We’ve got picks for men who like an old-fashioned shave, and men who lean electric, as well as aftercare selections for fighting irritation, which seems inevitable, but isn’t. Trimmer engineering is now advancing faster than automotive engineering and we’re fine with it.

See the Winners

Head Care

bald head shaver for grooming awards

Headcare is haircare for bald men, as maintaining a smooth-shaven dome takes careful tact with the right tools. Each product was hand-picked by SPY’s resident bald editor who has honed his regimen over years post-receding-hairline.

Hygiene

hygiene products for spy grooming awards 2023

Every crevice needs attention, and we’ve got picks for every body’s nooks. Finding a body wash that doesn’t strip moisture, moisturizers that don’t clog, and deodorants that clog without sticking wasn’t easy, but we’re here.

Dental Care

image featuring various dental products for SPY Grooming Awards 2023

A great toothbrush doesn’t need to be electric, but it probably should be. Water flossers aren’t excessive. Mouthwash can brighten a mood. SPY editors are very selective about their dental routines, and everything below has been vetted by, literally, hundreds of teeth.

Indulgences

spy grooming awards indulgences

We groom so we don’t smell. But we also groom to feel soothed, to satisfy an ache, to have fun. SPY is a pro-bath organization so bath bombs, face masks, and nail care kits also have spots in the medicine cabinet. Here are the ones worth indulging in.

The Best Dental Care Products of 2023 https://spy.com/articles/grooming/hygiene/dental-care-products-1202968343/ https://spy.com/articles/grooming/hygiene/dental-care-products-1202968343/#respond Thu, 20 Jul 2023 21:31:45 +0000 https://spy.com/?p=1202968343 Our editors independently select the products we recommend. If you can’t remember the last time you went to the dentist, consider this your reminder. Proper dental care doesn’t have to be boring and dull, but it’s also okay if floss isn’t the most exciting product on the counter. SPY editors are very particular about their teeth cleaning, and these products are approved by their (collective) hundreds of teeth.

Philips One by Sonicare

BEST TOOTHBRUSH

Philips One by Sonicare

With all the high-powered, Bluetooth-activated brushes out there, it begs the question: Does tooth brushing need to be this hi-tech? Our answer is no, and while Philips has some of the most impressive toothbrushes from that lot — with apps that track brushing behaviors and whatnot — this back-to-basics pick deserves some serious flowers.

Let’s not get complicated about teeth brushing. This one is the best upgrade from manual brushing you can make without spending $100+ on a machine that won’t do as much as consistent flossing. It’s comfortable to use, is battery-powered making it great for travel and has a 2-minute timer.

Selahatin Whitening Toothpaste

BEST TOOTHPASTE

Selahatin Whitening Toothpaste

Sweden-born Selahatin is doing something special in the oral care category; its toothpastes, mouthwashes, and oral sprays have delicious flavor profiles not unlike a top-tier fragrance. We think of them as the artisanal mixologists of the dental care world, and are quite impressed with their recent offerings.

There’s the honey-sweet Hypnotist with a refreshing kick of peppermint and anise, as well as the zesty cocktail of lime, lemon, salt, and peppermint that is Blue Forever. Eukalypse will probably garner the most fans, for its medley of eucalyptus, peppermint, and honey. Give them all a try to find a flavor that satisfies best; it’s as rewarding as finding a signature cologne.

MOON Midnight Enamel Care Dissolving Whitening Strips

BEST TEETH WHITENING

MOON Midnight Enamel Care Dissolving Whitening Strips

These whitening strips are impressively effective, very easy to use, and less painful than other options we’ve tried. Apply MOON’s strips to a freshly brushed smile just before bed, and they hug themselves to the contours of the public-facing teeth so that no crevice is left unwhitened. They’ve got hydroxyapatite to protect and fortify enamel, plus a bit of lavender and chamomile to soothe teeth and gums (and to promote a more satisfying slumber at that). Expect noticeable results after just a week of wear, but magnified brightness at the end of the 4-week supply (assuming two strips are used each night).

Boka Ela Mint Floss

BEST FLOSS

Boka Ela Mint Floss

Boka’s floss runs laps around the drugstore alternatives. It’s thick — but not rope-like — and slides through teeth thanks to a vegetable wax coating. That wax carries a minty freshness that lingers on the gums after use, too. This wax never frays, and is one of the sturdiest for navigating things like crowded teeth, trapped popcorn kernels, and fixed retainers. It’s also free of Teflon and petroleum, which isn’t something many drugstore brands can boast about.

SmartMouth The Original Activated Mouthwash

BEST MOUTHWASH

SmartMouth The Original Activated Mouthwash

SmartMouth is the absolute, hands-down best way to kill bad morning breath or to prevent mid-day coffee breath. It is powered by zinc ions that neutralize any odorous bacteria throughout the mouth and prevent them from proliferating for 12 hours after the fact. Use it before work or a big date for reassurance (and to spare colleagues or make a stellar first impression). Best of all, and the distinguishing factor that separated this option from others, is this clinical-grade clean is also free of alcohol so it won’t parch the mouth after use.

Quip Smart Custom Bundle

BEST DENTAL CARE KIT

Quip Smart Custom Bundle

Dental care is intimate. It’s specific. It’s borderline religious. That’s why grooming kits that assume that every buyer wants or needs the exact same solution are bogus. Not Quip. Quip lets customers opt in or out of every component of their kit, so you can stay loyal to any go-to toothpaste and floss if you want to. The brush’s slim profile packs a lot of power in something ½ the width of the standard Panasonic, and they regularly send head refills. They also have floss, fluoride toothpaste, mouthwash, and xylitol gum for people who want to purchase it all in one swoop. This is an award of a kit, but it’s also awarding a brand for respecting the sanctity of customization. God bless.

Smile Direct Club Large Water Flosser

BEST WATER FLOSSER

Smile Direct Club Large Water Flosser

When it comes to water flossers, not many brands can go toe-to-toe (or is it tooth-to-tooth?) with WaterPik, but Smile Direct Club is in that elite club and has them bested in our book. This one’s tank holds up to 90 seconds of water, which can be delivered in three different pulse settings (regular, slowed, and pulsing), adjusting to each user’s preference. And none of those settings is paltry; even the slower one has more oomph than most other brands’ best attempt. Still, this device doesn’t replace the actual floss itself—no water flosser should—but it’s terrific at blasting away plaque that otherwise builds up steadily around the gums and between the teeth.

Proper hygiene is grooming’s sensible side, but that doesn’t mean the products have to be boring. Coifing mooses and $80 candles are great and all, but every guy also needs a go-to body wash for darker crevices. We groom to take care of ourselves and also to not smell bad. The following products remove smell and add something a little extra too.

Ursa Major Hello Hinoki Spray Deodorant

BEST DEODORANT

Ursa Major Hello Hinoki Spray Deodorant

Picking a natural deodorant for this category winner may seem far-fetched, but this brand is worth the potential eye roll. We’re picking a deodorant, rather than an antiperspirant, so we were mainly focused on odor control rather than moisture management. Many uber-natural deodorants are either ineffective or equally as irritating as synthetic ones, but Ursa Major’s soothing vegan recipe is powerful against odor. Almost unbelievably so, given the simplicity of its ingredients.

Hello Hinoki calms skin with hinoki cypress and sage extract and defends against odor accumulation with lemon tea tree oil and ferment extract. It isn’t designed to mitigate moisture buildup as much as other alternatives (including Ursa Majors’ own roll-on sticks), but this one is great at controlling odor without causing a rash or clogging pores.

Basic Maintenance Lab The Body Wash

BEST BODY WASH

Basic Maintenance Lab The Body Wash

Basic Maintenance Lab focuses on simple but effective formulas, and is one of the best new collections of products from the past year. This body wash is exemplary of that entire roster — with soothing aloe, allantoin, chamomile, moisturizing and antimicrobial jojoba oil, plus nourishing Vitamin E — among a handful of other actives. One pump builds a generous, cushioning lather, and leaves skin better than it was found in the first place. It’s also that’s just one of the brand’s top-tier foundational offerings.

Axe

BEST BODY WASH

Axe Green Geranium Body Wash

Let’s be clear, Axe has earned its reputation as the noxiously over-applied grooming brand of pubescent boys and frat guys. Their scents are strong and marketing even more exorbitant. But their Green Geranium body wash, tested recently by SPY editors in a routine revisit to a medicine cabinet staple, was restored to its former favorite position. It has a rich lather and thick consistency that’s satisfying to scrub with but doesn’t leave a film on the skin after a rinse.
And to top it off, the scent is long-lasting — thanks to notes of Moroccan spearmint, French lavender, and Canadian Fir Balsam.

Jack Black Cool Moisture Body Lotion

BEST BODY LOTION

Jack Black Cool Moisture Body Lotion

Sure, smooth skin feels great, but with Jack Black’s body lotion, it also means you get a tingly menthyl-powered buzz all around the body. Spidey senses that are also moisturizing sent this product over the top in our book. And since we’re doing our due diligence, the ingredients are top-notch as well. It deploys macadamia nut oil, soy protein, jojoba oil, and Vitamin E for heavy-duty nourishment.

The lightweight lotion won’t suffocate pores and remedies everything from cracked heels to ashy elbows and even enflamed nailbeds overnight. A product that actually works all over the body is rare, and Jack Black’s option is a tier above basic drugstore brands without getting too fancy. It’s best applied in the evening after a shower, before a relaxing scroll or novel chapter. It’s also great to carry in a backpack for applying to slightly damp, freshly-washed hands so it can lock in moisture.

Anthony Sea Kelp Body Scrub

BEST SHOWER EXFOLIANT

Anthony Sea Kelp Body Scrub

A shower exfoliant is not a necessary product in a grooming routine, but a decadent product should still be made with high-performing ingredients. We weren’t just looking for any old volcanic ash concoction that would scrape calves for this award, we wanted a product that felt worth the extraneousness. Anyone who’s tried scoop-out body scrubs knows how easy it is to waste the product; what costs $50 can disappear in three applications. Not with Anthony, though. For 30 bones, this one is easy to portion, prolong, and massage across large areas of skin for maximum use. Its water-gel base cools with aloe and nourishes with kelp extract, while pumice and sea salt crystals slough away dead skin cells from shoulders to toe. Our editors also found it effective on target problem areas — callused feet, dry hands, or buildup around the ankles.

For a brighter smile without a trip to the dentist (and the hefty price tag to match), look no further than Crest Whitestrips. There’s a reason that hoards of people — from dentists to SPY editors and thousands of online reviewers — recommend them: they really work. And this Amazon Prime Day, from July 11-12, the brand’s 3D Professional Effects Whitestrips are 35% off. So if you’ve been thinking about whitening your teeth at home, consider this your go-to-goal moment.

Crest 3D Whitestrips Professional Effects against white background

Crest 3D Whitestrips, Professional Effects

Although the brand offers several different Whitestrips kits, this one includes 20 Professional Effects treatments (wear each one for a half-hour), as well as two one-hour express treatments as a bonus. The result is significantly whiter teeth in less than three weeks for less than $2 per treatment at the discounted price (we did the math). Avery Stone, SPY’s deputy editor, can attest that these really, truly work. Typically, she buys Professional Effects Whitestrips once a year for maintenance, and every time, she sees results: “When I’ve used this kit, I’ve gotten more compliments than ever on my teeth — they’re noticeably whiter after just a few sessions,” she says. “It’s hard to imagine a better return on investment, in terms of both price and the time spent wearing them.”

However, she adds, if you have particularly sensitive teeth or gums, you may want to take a one- or two-day break between sessions if you start to feel any sensitivity to heat or cold. (The good news? The brand also offers Whitestrips specifically for sensitive teeth, which are also 40% off this Prime Day.)

The Best Ball Deodorants for Moisture and Odor Control, According to Dermatologists https://spy.com/articles/grooming/hygiene/ball-deodorant-1202710871/ https://spy.com/articles/grooming/hygiene/ball-deodorant-1202710871/#respond Sun, 11 Jun 2023 23:00:00 +0000 https://spy.com/?p=1202710871 Our editors independently select the products we recommend. Men have a special relationship with their balls. They’re a potential source of pain, pleasure, and life. The two amigos can be hard to ignore, especially if they’re itchy or sweaty, but the family jewels and their male custodians need not suffer. They can be ready for prime time after a date, a long day in a warm office, or 18 holes of golf with a little help from ball deodorants.

“Less sweat in the ball area implies fewer germs that feed on sweat, which reduces the smell of sweat that might come from the groin area,” said Dr. Anna Chacon, a Florida-based dermatologist. “Things will also feel much less sticky down there, so it is much more comfortable.”

Ball deodorants offer the same benefits to the groin area that underarm deodorants deliver to armpits. Made with moisture-absorbing and skin-hydrating ingredients, ball deodorants improve sweat management, reduce unpleasant chafing, and even add a little fragrance below the belt. SPY grooming experts believe there’s a gap in knowledge among men about why ball deodorants exist and why men use them, so we spoke to several dermatologists and rounded up the best ones made specifically for the groin area.

Ball deodorants are a pretty straightforward category in terms of costs because there are only so many relevant and safe ingredients to use, and those ingredients just don’t cost that much. That’s why most guys shopping for ball deodorants should expect and seek to pay under $20.00 (and significantly less in most cases), unless they’re getting a ton of product. Anything beyond that and men are just spending their money on branding and packaging.

bottle of MANSCAPED Crop Preserver ball deodorant against white background

BEST OVERALL

MANSCAPED® The Crop Preserve, Anti-Chafing Men's Ball Deodorant

The Crop Preserver from Manscaped is formulated to keep any man’s balls in peak condition. It manages sweat with absorbent tapioca starch and refreshes sensitive ball skin with water, aloe, and Manscaped’s Refined fragrance. Though some powder ball deodorants may be cheaper, they lack the multi-purpose formula that the Crop Preserver brings. A little goes a long way, so men don’t have to worry about wasting product or over-applying. This is the best of the ball deodorants because it delivers anti-chafing, moisture-control, and smell-neutralizing benefits in a convenient and comfortable package.

two tubes of Fresh Body's Fresh Balls Lotion against white background

RUNNER-UP

Fresh Body FB – Fresh Balls Lotion (2-Pack)

Why It Stands Out: The Fresh Body Fresh Ball Lotion applies as a quick-drying lotion to save the user the mess that can come from powder-based ball deodorants.

ROI: Users only need a little dab of this non-greasy lotion for less chafing, less balls smell and minimal stickiness, so these two bottles are a solid bargain and should last at least a month even with daily use.

Hot Take: Lotions are simply less messy than powders and that holds true with the Fresh Balls Lotion. With tapioca starch, oatmeal kernel extract, and aloe, the formula is able to soak up moisture without clumping and leave ball skin softer and more supple. Plus, it’s the second-most popular and second-most reviewed ball deodorant on Amazon, with over 11,000 ratings, making it a pretty sure bet for relief for most guys.

Chassis Man Care Ice Max Premium Powder against white background

HONORABLE MENTION

Chassis Ice Max Premium Body Powder

Why It Stands Out: The Chassis Man Care Ice Max Premium Powder offers a comprehensive formula for restoring comfort to the balls. It relies on multiple sweat-absorbing and skin-hydrating ingredients for maximum impact.

ROI: The Chassis powder is among the priciest powder ball deodorants on this list, but powders tend to last longer than liquids. This both justifies the higher price point and makes it well worth the returned value for avoiding grody balls.

Hot Take: With everything but the kitchen sink in its formula, the Chassis powder will dry and deodorize men’s balls to perfection. The main risk for most guys is that something in the powder could irritate their skin, as harsher ingredients tend to come with that risk. The inclusion of both tapioca starch and baking soda for absorption practically guarantees it for some guys. But for guys seeking an effective powder ball deodorant, mess, or chance of irritation be damned, the Chassis powder will succeed.

Dude Powder Body Powder against white background

AFFORDABLE BALL DEODORANT

Dude Products Body Powder

Why It Stands Out: Dude Powder comes from an established men’s health brand and at a friendly price point so first-time users don’t want to spend a ton on something they’ve never tried.

ROI: This bottle offers roughly the same amount of product as the Chassis powder, but it costs a little over half as much. It’s a low-risk deal worth taking on for the twins.

Hot Take: Feel the chill! The cooling menthol may not be for everyone, but it makes perfect sense when dealing with warm, grimy balls, especially if you live in a hot, humid environment. This powder also relies on cornstarch for absorption, a welcome alternative for guys who want to avoid tapioca starch- or baking soda-based products.

Happy Nuts Comfort Powder against white background

BEST VALUE BALL DEODORANT

Happy Nuts Comfort Powder

Why It Stands Out: The Happy Nuts Comfort Powder has a somewhat generic formula, but it was made by a company that exclusively specializes in men’s intimate care. It also offers 6 ounces of powder, much more than the industry standard 4 ounces.

ROI: Although it’s not the cheapest, this powder offers the best price per ounce among ball deodorants by far. It’s the best possible investment a guy can make in this product category.

Hot Take: Its formula of tapioca starch and soothing ingredients like coconut and aloe isn’t much to brag about, but the sheer volume of powder and sandalwood-inspired fragrance make this powder worthy. And really, who wouldn’t want to give a company called Happy Nuts a shot?

tube of Ballsy's Ballguard Liquid Powder against white background

BEST LIQUID POWDER DEODORANT

Ballsy Groin Deodorant for Men by Ballguard

Why It Stands Out: The Ballsy Ballguard Liquid Powder is a liquid cream that quickly dries into a deodorizing powder. This gives the user the easy applicability of cream and the non-greasy, non-sticky feeling of powder in an ideal hybrid package.

ROI: This ball deodorant is in the Goldilocks zone in terms of costs; it’s not too pricey nor too cheap.

Hot Take: Ballsy is well-established in the men’s intimate care space, but this product isn’t offering anything special that hasn’t already been offered by other ball deodorants except for its liquid-to-powder formula. Nonetheless, it is a totally competent product, featuring relevant anti-chafing and odor-controlling ingredients that can still save the balls when they’re in a pinch.

Gold Bond Medicated Body Powder against white background

CLASSIC DEODORIZING POWDER

Gold Bond Body Powder

Why It Stands Out: Gold Bond is designed for the whole body, but it can easily be used on men’s groin area to minimize itching and excess moisture. It’s also available at many large box stores and pharmacies, which makes it more accessible and easier to purchase in some areas.

ROI: This bottle has a stupid amount of powder for its price. It’s just a dollar per ounce and comes in a few differently-sized bottles so you can pack for travel or buy in bulk.

Hot Take: For guys less concerned with product branding and male-specific design, and more concerned with results, Gold Bond is a solid bet. It’s a triple-action formula that cools as it calms itching, and there are minimal irritating ingredients in it as well.

spray bottle of The Spray by Meridian against white background

BEST WET SPRAY

The Spray by Meridian Grooming

Why It Stands Out: The Meridian Grooming The Spray is one of just a few ball deodorants that come as a sprayable liquid with a nozzle.

ROI: There’s no disputing that this spray is crazy expensive compared to competing products, though it’s high quality and beloved by Meridian customers.

Hot Take: This is the closest thing to a splurge purchase that exists among ball deodorants. The watery consistency really does feel refreshing, like getting misted on your face on a hot day, and it does minimize chafing and odor. But lots of other products accomplish the same goals while giving more product for less money. This product is reserved for guys who want the feeling of something more premium.

The Best Products for an Itchy Beard, According to Dermatologists https://spy.com/articles/grooming/hygiene/how-to-stop-beard-itch-products-139021/ https://spy.com/articles/grooming/hygiene/how-to-stop-beard-itch-products-139021/#respond Tue, 30 May 2023 16:00:00 +0000 http://spy.com/?p=139021 Our editors independently select the products we recommend. Occasional beard itchiness comes with having facial hair. A cursory chin rub can easily look like a sophisticated, contemplative pause in conversation. Incessant beard itchiness, on the other hand, is worth addressing.

There are plenty of products that can help, but beard itchiness doesn’t necessarily call for introducing a specific product. It’s often the result of subpar hygiene habits. NYC-based dermatologist Barry Goldman of Goldman Dermatology suggests a novel concept:  washing and moisturizing the beard will prevent itchiness. Groundbreaking.

“Washing removes the dirt, oil, and buildup, so one should wash [their beard] daily even if they don’t wash their hair daily,” Goldman said. Seasonality can also contribute to itch. Dry winter air can leave skin parched and scaly, but a lack of proper cleansing during sweaty summer humidity can also lead to irritation.

Beard itch is not unlike another pesky phenomenon above the shoulders: itchy scalp. “The scalp and beard share similar features functionally and anatomically, such as the presence of oil-secreting sebaceous glands,” said board-certified dermatologist Kunal Malik of Spring Street Dermatology in NYC. “The scalp and beard are each prone to similar pathologies, like eczema, seborrheic dermatitis (dandruff), psoriasis, allergic contact dermatitis and more.” Malik said the most common cases are related to dandruff and allergic reactions from ingredients in beard dyes and shampoos.

Start by looking at the ingredient labels in skincare products, in case there are offending items causing itchiness.

What the Experts Say

The Best Ingredients for Beard Itch

If beard itch is caused by dryness, both doctors recommend carrier oils like jojoba oil, “which replicates the body’s natural sebum,” says Goldman. Argan oil, avocado oil, pomegranate oil and sweet almond oil can also deliver similar anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties to the skin and absorb into the whiskers to make them softer as well.

Goldman and Malik also encourage looking for active ingredients commonly found in shampoos for scalp itch including antifungals like ketoconazole, pyrithione zinc, and selenium sulfide, as well as salicylic acid for exfoliation and oil toning. And yes, Goldman said it’s OK to use a scalp shampoo directly on the beard. “They should be left on for a few minutes before rinsing,” he said.

A few other SPY-recommended ingredients include hyaluronic acid, one of the most hydrating ingredients in skincare, as well as shea and cocoa butters. Hyaluronic acid can attract and hold up to 1,000 times its own weight in water, and is common in facial creams and serums. Adding one to a skincare routine can help calm the skin under the beard and prevent itching from dryness. The butters can also soften and condition hairs and reduce inflammation.

The Worst Ingredients for Beard Itch

Essential oils are frequent culprits for contact dermatitis and other allergic reactions on the skin, and should be avoided entirely on an itchy beard. Malik cautions against using them for treating and preventing beard itch — especially in unregulated formulas or as a standalone application. If used, they should always be mixed in with a balanced formula that’s been tested for efficacy.

Tea tree oil is known for its anti-inflammatory, oil-balancing, and anti-microbial properties. It’s also widely misused and can be especially drying and irritating on contact. Others to skip if a beard is itchy are ylang-ylang oil, lemongrass oil, sandalwood oil, and clove oil

The most important ingredient to look out for, by far, is fragrance. Try to avoid added or synthetic fragrances in all products applied to the face/beard. Some might have a natural scent due to ingredients in the blend (often a smidge of essential oils), but any sign of “Fragrance” or “Parfum” on the ingredients list is a red flag in this category.

Lastly, for anyone dying a beard: Try to avoid dyes that use the chemical agent para-phenylenediamine (PPD), as the partially-oxidized form, the one most commonly used, can cause contact dermatitis in sensitive individuals. This will be difficult, as it is the primary ingredient in dying products. Ideally, find one with a generous balance of HPPS (Hydroxyethyl-p-phenylenediamine sulfate) to offset the inclusion of PPD, since HPPS is a gentler ingredient and much less likely to cause contact dermatitis.

Kamedis beard wash and packaging box against white background

BEST OVERALL

Kamedis Beard Wash with Pyrithione Zinc

The best products for beard itch prevention don’t always match the best ones for beard itch treatment, since the latter tends to demand active ingredients. This beard wash is excellent for both, as it deploys the antifungal active ingredient pyrithione zinc, which is commonly used in scalp itch shampoos as a remedy for seborrheic dermatitis/dandruff.

It also exfoliates flakes and balances sebum levels with salicylic acid, another common active ingredient used in scalp treatments. It should be in any scruffy guy’s shower, and used at least once a week when preventing itch (double that during the hot, humid height of summer), and used daily when actively treating beard itch.

Rocky Mountain unscented beard oil against white background

BEST BEARD OIL

Rocky Mountain Barber Company Unscented Beard Oil

Key Ingredients: Argan oil, coconut oil, grapeseed oil, jojoba oil,

How It Works: Rocky Mountain Barber lets these carrier oils do the talking, ensuring both skin and scruff stay soft, and without any potentially irritating artificial fragrance.

There’s More: The inclusion of rosemary extract also promotes hair growth and further strengthens the scruff as it sprouts.

Badger Balm unscented against white background

BEST BEARD BALM

Badger Unscented Balm

Key Ingredients: Olive oil, beeswax

How It Works: No frills with this one: It uses olive oil to nourish skin and beeswax to condition and lock in moisture. Best of all: no added fragrance, so itch-prone skin can rest easy.

There’s More: Badger’s balm is an all-over utility balm for skin and hair everywhere. This is true with many beard-oriented products; typically, anything used on the facial skin can be used on the beard, while standard shampoos serve as great beard washes, too. Lastly, any non-comedogenic hair product (balms included) can be used to tame and condition whiskers at any length.

Grooming Lounge Whisker Sauce conditioner lotion for beard and skin

BEST BEARD CONDITIONER

Grooming Lounge Whisker Sauce Beard Conditioner

Key Ingredients: Avocado oil, shea butter, aloe vera, panthenol, Vitamin E

How It Works: This leave-on lotion softens strands and nourishes skin all day, working as both a remedy and treatment for dry, itchy beards.

There’s More: A light touch of lime oil adds a natural and deliciously refreshing scent, and since it’s natural it’s formulated to have no adverse impact on the skin.

BlueBeards Unscented beard wash against white background

BEST BEARD WASH

Bluebeards Unscented Beard Wash

Key Ingredients: Aloe vera, coconut extract, Vitamin E, panthenol

How It Works: As much a conditioning agent as a beard shampoo, this unscented wash calms inflammation and softens both skin and hair as it flushes away dirt and excess oil.

There’s More: Use a product like this every day to prevent beard itch, while subbing in one with an active antifungal or antimicrobial ingredient once a week.

ZilberHaar Pocket beard and mustache brush against white background

BEST BEARD SCRUB

ZilberHaar Pocket Mustache and Beard Brush

Materials: Pearwood and boar bristles

How It Works: There are tons of scrubs out there, but a boar-bristle beard brush will help exfoliate the skin beneath the hairs, and should be paired with other products on this roster to fully neutralize itching. (It sure does provide a nice temporary itch-relieving scratch, too.)

There’s More: Beard brushes are great for combing out the beard and distributing oils to the ends of each strand in longer beards. This brush is fairly small, so use it in the early stages of beard growth, then swap in a bigger version if the beard outgrows it.

La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Serum against white background

BEST FACIAL SERUM

La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum

Key Ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, panthenol, cica grass

How It Works: This facial serum is a spectacular initial layer on the skin beneath one’s facial hair, and can then be layered with conditioning oils or balms. It attracts moisture from the air and helps keep skin soft, hydrated, and soothed.

There’s More: The inclusion of cica grass (centella asiatic) and panthenol (Vitamin B5) make this serum a terrific skin soother, too.

True Sons Hair and Beard Dye kit against white background with directions and hair comb

BEST BEARD DYE

True Sons Hair and Beard Dye Foam

Key Ingredient: Hydroxyethyl-p-phenylenediamine sulfate

How It Works: True Sons aims for a more natural finish with its hair and beard dye, so that the result isn’t like a dark block of color and rather something softer and more blended with one’s blondes or grays.

There’s More: This is one of the few beard dyes that doesn’t rely on PPD (para-phenylenediamine), which is a very common culprit behind contact dermatitis. Beard dyes in general will often cause itching, drying, and irritation, so always proceed with caution. True Sons is likely the most gentle for the largest group of guys.

The Best Over-the-Counter Treatments for Sweaty Palms, According to Dermatologists https://spy.com/articles/grooming/hygiene/sweaty-palms-best-over-the-counter-treatments-156212/ https://spy.com/articles/grooming/hygiene/sweaty-palms-best-over-the-counter-treatments-156212/#respond Thu, 18 May 2023 16:00:00 +0000 http://spy.com/?p=156212 Our editors independently select the products we recommend. Modern man’s formidable paws marry the evolutionary gift of opposable thumbs to one big misfortune: clamminess. It’s uncomfortable. It hinders the hands’ one major purpose. It can make first impressions a little weird.

For most people, a moist hand is the sign of a humid day or alarmed sympathetic nervous system. For others, excessive sweat is the norm. Primary palmar hyperhidrosis is the fancy medical term for chronically sweaty palms. It’s notably distinct from the occasional dampness during a high-stress job interview. It’s typically a genetic condition with no underlying causes.

“In primary hyperhidrosis, nerve signals trigger overactivity of sweat glands,” Dr. Blair Murphy-Rose, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City, says. “Approximately 5% of adults struggle with hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating. It is incredibly common.”

The high occurrence rate doesn’t make it any less of a bummer for its unwilling bearers. “Sweaty palms are extremely disruptive to patients’ lives,” says Dr. Cameron Rohksar, a board-certified dermatological surgeon and associate professor of dermatology at New York City’s Mount Sinai School of Medicine, put it. Clinical intervention is available for guys who can’t get through the day without dabbing continuously, but for those with a little more moisture than they’d like, over-the-counter options can mitigate awkwardness.

SweatBlock Antiperspirant lotion against white background

BEST OVERALL

SweatBlock Antiperspirant Quick-Dry Lotion for Hands

SweatBlock Antiperspirant Quick-Dry Lotion for Hands is the best place to start for the vast majority of sweaty palm sufferers. It contains 17.5% aluminum sesquichlorohydrate to plug up sweat glands and reduce perspiration. Plus, it’s formulated as a quick-dry lotion, meaning you don’t need to experience the gel or powdery texture of a traditional underarm antiperspirant on your hands. “This hand lotion promises less slipping and better gripping,” Dr. Brendan Camp, a double board-certified dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology in New York City, says. “It is a quick-drying, non-greasy, long-lasting treatment for sweaty palms.”

Carpe Antiperspirant hand lotion and its packaging against white bakcground

RUNNER UP

Carpe Antiperspirant Hand Lotion

Why It Stands Out: The Carpe Antiperspirant Hand Lotion was developed with sweaty palms in mind and features 15% aluminum sesquichlorohydrate to block sweat glands. “This hand cream is designed to target excess moisture on the palms and is a lightweight, non-greasy formula,” Camp says.

ROI: You get more bang for your buck with the SweatBlock lotion, but this is a popular option on Amazon because it’s worked for so many people.

Hot Take: Other products may offer stronger anti-sweat protection, but they also tend to irritate the skin more due to harsher ingredients. The Carpe lotion strikes a nice balance for those with sensitive skin. For golfers, video gamers, or frequenters of anything that requires less sweat and more tactility, Carpe will help with seizing the day.

Duradry antiperspirant wipes against white background

BEST WIPES

Duradry Antiperspirant Wipes | Duradry Antiperspirant Wipes for Hands and Feet

Why It Stands Out: The Duradry Antiperspirant Wipes confer all the benefits of a wipe: portability, disposability, freshness, and a one-time sanitary application of a potent sweat-blocking ingredient.

ROI: As far as all grooming wipes go, these are more expensive than average. But a saved first impression or more reliable grip on a dumbbell during a workout is worth it.

Hot Take: These wipes rely on the same aluminum sesquichlorohydrate as other antiperspirants and could be a lifeline for the person whose palms could pour sweat at any moment. They’re also fragrance-free, vegan, and usable on feet, too. Some reviewers online noted that they’re useful on armpits, too, once deodorant has worn off. Daily use promises a great reduction in hand and palm sweat, making them a great addition to an office drawer, car center console, golf or gym bag.

two Dove ultimate antiperspirant deodorant stick against white background

BEST ANTIPERSPIRANT STICK

Dove Ultimate Antiperspirant Deodorant Stick

Why It Stands Out: This product wasn’t designed for use on the hands, but don’t let that stop you. “This antiperspirant uses a water-based technology and contains a high concentration of glycerin to nourish the skin and minimize irritation while also helping to protect against sweat and odor,” said Dr. Marisa Garshick, a board-certified dermatologist and clinical assistant professor at Cornell University.

ROI: This stuff is downright expensive for antiperspirant sticks, but it’s hard to argue with applying aluminum sesquichlorohydrate straight onto hands.

Hot Take: Whatever works on armpits will probably work on hands, too. With its emphasis on non-irritation, this antiperspirant stick is one of the best options to pivot from your pits to your hands. Leave it to the feminine aisle for a gentle and savvy solution to sweaty palms.

bottle of dry hands ultimate gripping solution against white background

BEST SPORTS SOLUTION

Dry Hand Nelson Sports Products 2-Ounce Ultimate Gripping Solution

Why It Stands Out: The Dry Hand Nelson Sports Products Ultimate Gripping Solution takes a completely different approach, relying on silica and alcohol to dry your hands and silicon-based ingredients to help seal moisture away.

ROI: This product may look simple and minimal, but a little bit of the Dry Hand solution goes a long way to completely dry out sweaty palms.

Hot Take: This is literally the product pole dancers choose to be able to maintain their grips. It’s not the daily solution: It’s the sawed-off shotgun of hand-drying options. Though nothing about the Dry Hand solution suggests ongoing use will have added benefits – there are no antiperspirant ingredients – but it’s excellent for drying hands immediately for rock climbing, golf, tennis, bowling, cycling, and more.

Gamer Grip dry touch gel against white background

BEST DRYING GEL

Gamer Grip Instant Dry-Touch Gel

Why It Stands Out: The Gamer Grip Instant Dry-Touch Gel is the only antiperspirant product made for sweaty palms that comes as a gel.

ROI: This drying gel is a little pricier per ounce than other hand formulations but the featured aluminum chlorohydrate does exactly what it’s supposed to do with a claimed no-sweat time of four hours after application.

Hot Take: Gamers have mixed reviews in online reviews because some found that the gel left a residue on their controllers. But most agree that the gel got rid of their sweaty palms for some time and gave them added grip, traction and dryness. Ultimately, this choice is only ideal for those who prefer a gel to a lotion or powder.

For the most part, antiperspirant products all rely on the same sweat-blocking ingredients – some aluminum compound – whether they’re made for hands, feet or underarms. The differences really boil down to formulations, as even the supporting casts of ingredients are similar, and the best antiperspirant product for any sweater’s needs will ultimately come down to personal preference.

Not On the List

Not included on this list are chalks, cornstarch products, and other drying powders. While these products are generally great at drying sweaty palms, they can be messy and many don’t prevent or block sweat in any way. For those reasons, those kinds of products were excluded from the list.

The Best Sweat Wipes for a Quick Refresh When a Shower Isn’t in the Cards https://spy.com/articles/grooming/hygiene/best-sweat-wipes-252938/ https://spy.com/articles/grooming/hygiene/best-sweat-wipes-252938/#respond Sun, 14 May 2023 17:00:00 +0000 http://spy.com/?p=252938 Our editors independently select the products we recommend. Nothing demands a shower quite like a long, sweaty workout, but scheduling doesn’t always allow for it. And because sitting in the funk all day isn’t an option, both for hygienic and social reasons, a quick to-go alternative is the next best thing.

Enter sweat wipes, which provide temporary relief so the body can proceed with the day’s activities until a window of time opens up later on. While not equivalent to a shower, they can get the job done in a pinch and help users to avoid body acne, rashes, and other skin issues that can result from staying in workout clothes all day.

What the Experts Say

Idaho-based dermatologist Dr. Dustin Portella noted that the sweat, dirt, and oil from a workout will stay on the skin for hours if a shower or bath doesn’t happen promptly. Sooner rather than later is always best, even if it’s just a swipe from a sweat wipe.

Sweat wipes are also great for targeting certain areas that are more prone to sweat and stink. Paying close attention to hot spots — like the armpits and crotch area — can go a long way toward taming the stink, as the combination of sweat gland concentration and higher friction in those areas makes them ripe for prolonged smell.

“Sweat is more than just water and electrolytes,” explained Dr. Portella. “You actually have cellular debris that comes out in armpit and groin sweat. All that organic cellular debris gives bacteria more to feed on, which is what makes people stink when they sweat. And when you include oils that are full of triglycerides and fatty acids, sweat in those areas is really a nutrient-dense food for bacteria.”

But before raiding a diaper bag for a stash of baby wipes to use at the gym, Dr. Portella recommends taking time to read the labels to make sure they are water-based and additive-free. And licensed esthetician Ian Michael Crum added that it’s important to find sweat wipes that are fragrance-free to minimize skin irritation.

“It’s tricky because sometimes products will be labeled unscented, which just means the smell from any additives they used have been neutralized,” Crum said. “So that’s technically not without fragrance chemicals added. It just means you don’t smell anything. I would look for products that say fragrance-free in a claim because, I mean, there are no regrets after that.”

When shopping for wipes, Crum also recommends looking for options with all-natural skin-soothing qualities. “After working out, your skin might be slightly red just from all that blood circulation. Soothing wipes with aloe, fruit enzymes, or cucumber extract can help the body cool down just a bit.”

two packages of cottonelle flushable wipes

BEST FLUSHABLE SWEAT WIPES

Cottonelle Fresh Care On-The-Go Flushable Wipes

While some wipes will clog toilets and septic systems, Cottonelle’s flushable wipes are constructed for no-drama flushing, making them great for use in locker room public bathrooms. Cottonelle’s wipes find a sweet spot of enough durability to complete a wipe-down without requiring frequent plunges and calls to the plumber. And the ripple texture on these wipes isn’t just for show — it improves moisture absorption and residue removal for a more efficient clean.

the honest company flushable wipes

BEST COMPOSTABLE SWEAT WIPES

The Honest Company Clean Conscious Wipes

The Honest Company’s refreshing wipes use only seven different ingredients and a base that’s 99% water to help minimize the chances of irritation. They’re made without plastics, fragrances, parabens, alcohol, or chlorine processing, and also fully disintegrate in just eight weeks after use. They’re also recognized by the National Eczema Association’s Seal of Acceptance.

NorthShore Supreme Wipes package against white background

BEST HEAVY-DUTY SWEAT WIPES

NorthShore Supreme Heavy-Duty Quilted Wipes

For a wipe with a more washcloth-like feel, NorthShore Supreme comes through with a heavy-duty quilted option that resists tearing. These wipes feature aloe and calendula to promote soothed, hydrated skin and are hypoallergenic, paraben-free, and alcohol-free. They’re also slightly larger than a sheet of notebook paper and much larger than the average body wipe, so heavy sweaters and taller humans can get their money’s worth.

Surviveware Biodegradable wet wipes package against white background

BEST LARGE BIODEGRADABLE WET WIPES

Surviveware Biodegradable Wet Wipes

The first shower following a camping trip is a glorious experience. Sweat has a remarkable ability to attract dirt, dust, and campfire smoke, which sometimes leaves campers wanting a bit less of the great outdoors on their person before they return to the joys of running water. Surviveware’s biodegradable wipes are constructed for use outdoors with a light scent and biodegradable design. Note: even though they will disintegrate, it’s still a best practice to pack them out from the campsite.

package of Lume deodorant wipes against white background

BEST DEODORANT SWEAT WIPES

Lume Deodorant Wipes, Body and Underarm Cleansing Wipes, 45 Count

Mandelic acid’s antibacterial properties make it a key natural additive for those wanting more odor control out of their wipes (This acid also exfoliates the skin, removing dead cells that can trap bacteria and sweat, leading to body odor.) These wipes are also scented with a fresh cucumber fragrance, adding a bit more peace of mind that sweat stink will be kept at bay.

Stall Mates individually wrapped flushable wipes

BEST SOOTHING SWEAT WIPES

Stall Mates Wipes: Flushable, individually wrapped wipes for travel. Unscented with Vitamin E & Aloe

The individual wrapping on these sweat wipes keeps them fresh and ready for use, and their soothing ingredients make them particularly great for folks whose skin flares up after a workout. Featuring cucumber extract, oat kernel extract, aloe, vitamin E, and chamomile, these wipes do double-duty to clean and calm the skin.

pack of 3 DUDE wipes against white background

MINTIEST SWEAT WIPES

DUDE Wipes Mint Chill Wipes

Dude Wipes take a mintier approach to wipedowns by including natural ingredients like eucalyptus, mint, and tea tree oils to refresh sweaty surfaces. Armpits become something to be smelled, and aloe and vitamin E help keep the skin moisturized and feeling happy.

HyperGo's Wipes For Your Life flushable wipes against white background

LARGEST SWEAT WIPES

HyperGo Full-Body Bathing Wipes

Talk about big-time wipes. Measuring 12 by 12 inches, HyperGo’s bathing wipes are large enough for any job, and there’s plenty of all-natural substance to go with all of that size. Aloe, oatmeal, chamomile, and honey all make the 100% plant-based ingredient list, with alcohol and fragrances nowhere to be found.

The Best Unscented Body Washes (Because Not Everyone Wants To Smell Like a Douglas Fir) https://spy.com/articles/grooming/hygiene/best-unscented-body-wash-163386/ https://spy.com/articles/grooming/hygiene/best-unscented-body-wash-163386/#comments Wed, 10 May 2023 14:00:00 +0000 http://spy.com/?p=163386 Our editors independently select the products we recommend. Scent layering is a tactful skill — a lack of which becomes desperately obvious to everyone in the immediate vicinity. For men specifically, the amped-up degree of most noxious colognes, hair gels, and body washes all trying to approximate the Manliest Man at the O.K. Corral can easily lead to overwhelming combinations. Subtlety is power, as is letting a natural musk shine through.

An unscented body wash can give someone a minimal, clean smell or allow for a cologne, moisturizer, deodorant or beard oil to define one’s olfactory presence. Not to mention, unscented products often get an endorsement from skincare professionals for people with sensitive and easily irritated skin.

“Synthetic chemicals and natural extracts found in scented products may trigger an allergic or irritant reaction in the skin by triggering the immune system or inflammation from repeated exposure,” says Dr. Brendan Camp, a New York-based doctor with board certifications in dermatology and dermatopathology.

It’s addition by subtraction: Unscented body washes deliver the same clean while lowering the odds of irritation and fragrance conflict.

CeraVe unscented body wash

BEST OVERALL

CeraVe

CeraVe is one of a handful of ultra-popular drugstore brands because its products tend to work well for even the most sensitive skin. The CeraVe Soothing Body Wash checks every box: It’s fragrance-free, designed with very dry skin in mind, and features CeraVe’s signature blend of three essential ceramides and hyaluronic acid, which contribute to a healthy, moisturized skin biome. For newbies unsure of where to start in the unscented world, CeraVe is almost certainly a safe bet. “Formulated specifically for those with dry skin, the first two ingredients in this body wash are oils to keep skin moisturized,” Camp says.

Vanicream gentle unscented body wash

DERMS' FAVORITE

Vanicream

Why It Stands Out: Both Garshick and Camp often recommend Vanicream’s Gentle Body Wash when talking about body cleansers. “Vanicream Gentle Body Wash is a perfect option that can be used by people of all ages as it is free of preservatives, parabens, formaldehyde, lanolin, fragrance and dyes, so it is a great option for kids and adults, as well as those with sensitive skin,” Garshick says.

Made For: People who know for sure that unnecessary ingredients irritate their skin and want something made specifically to avoid sensitivity.

Hot Take: This unscented body wash is the definition of addition by subtraction, with no dyes, masking fragrance, or other known irritating ingredients. Dermatologists recommend it because their patients see results (or rather, don’t see irritation) with it, plain and simple.

Aveeno unscented body wash against white background

MOST SOOTHING

Aveeno

Why It Stands Out: Remember oatmeal baths and chickenpox? Oatmeal is a naturally soothing ingredient and the Aveeno Skin Relief Body Wash leans into that with an oat trifecta to confront itchy, dry skin.

Made For: People who want a natural anchor ingredient like oat that they know and trust to soothe their skin.

Hot Take: When it comes to soothing skincare products, Aveeno is the king (and is arguably singlehandedly responsible for the ubiquitousness of oatmeal in skincare).

Cetaphil unscented body wash against white background

HYPOALLERGENIC PICK

Cetaphil Ultra Gentle Body Wash

Why It Stands Out: There are lots of unscented and hypoallergenic body washes to choose from, but few have the brand cache and evidence of efficacy from decades worth of usage like Cetaphil.

Made For: People with sensitive skin who want a brand available everywhere that’s known for its gentle skincare.

Hot Take: Cetaphil is so serious about gentle products that it offers multiple varieties of this unscented body wash alongside its deep catalog of lotions and other sensitive skincare products. Sensitive skin is Cetaphil’s raison d’etre and we’d be silly not to suggest Cetaphil’s main gentle fragrance-free body wash.

Dove irritation unscented body wash against white background

SOCIALLY CONSCIOUS

Dove

Why It Stands Out: Not only is the Dove Irritation Care Body Wash hypoallergenic and fragrance-free, it’s PETA-certified cruelty-free and made in 100% recycled plastic bottles, so you can feel as good as your skin will feel after you use it.

Made For: People with drier-than-dry skin, frequent redness, and even chronic eczema.

Hot Take: It’s nice that Dove goes the extra mile with its recycled bottle and cruelty-free testing, but more importantly, this unscented body wash just works whether you’re dealing with dermatitis, winter-dry skin, or chronically irritable skin.

La Roche-Posay gentle moisturizing body wash against white backgroiund

FANCY FRAGRANCE-FREE

La Roche-Posay

Why It Stands Out: Instead of pulling out potentially irritating ingredients, the fragrance-free La Roche-Posay Lipikar Wash AP+ Moisturizing Body & Face Wash runs the other direction, loading up on hydrating, soothing ingredients to bolster dry skin. “In addition to being fragrance-free, this body wash contains niacinamide, shea butter, and thermal water to fortify the skin,” Camp says.

Made For: People looking for a face- and body-friendly (and baby-friendly, even) unscented wash that promises to leave skin clean, soft, and soothed.

Hot Take: In a four-week consumer study conducted by the brand, the overwhelming majority of participants said this unscented body wash respects the skin’s balance, leaves skin feeling soothed and hydrated. If that’s not enough, its efficacy is backed up by 10 years of research and a grand total of 19 clinical studies. If La Roche-Posay’s formula wasn’t working, they wouldn’t keep selling it.

Eucerin Advanced Cleansing Body & Face Cleanser against white background

CRACKED SKIN CHAMPION

Eucerin

Why It Stands Out: The Eucerin Advanced Cleansing Body & Face Cleanser focuses on maintaining the skin’s pH balance, a unique approach among body washes in general.

Made For: People with dry skin who’ve used Eucerin’s other products and want to keep it in the family.

Hot Take: Ask people who work with their hands what they use to soothe their dry, cracked skin and you’re all but guaranteed to get a Eucerin product as an answer. If it’s good enough for hardworking hands, Eucerin will be good enough for any temperamental skin, whether on the face or body.

SheaMoisture body wash against white background

GREAT INGREDIENTS

Shea Moisture

Why It Stands Out: The SheaMoisture Soothing Body Wash formula combines three heavy-hitting ingredients (oatmeal, vitamin E, and fair-trade shea butter), into one excellent unscented body wash.

Made For: People with dry skin who appreciate the deep moisturization that shea butter offers.

Hot Take: Shea butter rules and is one of a handful of highly effective, universally applicable moisturizing ingredients, alongside things like aloe vera, vitamin E and hyaluronic acid. Any body wash that leans into shea butter means a damn good time for your skin.

Even some products labeled as unscented may still contain added fragrance, called a masking fragrance, to cover up the scent that emerges from the combined products. Even this masking fragrance can cause skin irritation for people with sensitive skin, Garshick says. As an alternative, she recommends seeking out hypoallergenic body washes, saying they are “much less likely” to irritate your skin than products that are high in fragrances or other preservatives.
