Introducing The Hunt for the Perfect T-Shirt: First Up, Everlane’s Premium-Weight Relaxed Crew

The rumors are true. This past year, we’ve been on the hunt for the world’s best T-shirt in order to decide once and for all: what really is the world’s best T-shirt?

The world’s best T-shirt shouldn’t only be the most comfortable. In order to be considered the best of the best, the world’s best T-shirt needs to also be versatile, affordable and potentially most importantly, durable. Because who wants to spend $50 on a T-shirt when it’s going to get some holes at the neckline in just three washes? No one.

So, what really is the best T-shirt? Join us on our hunt and find out for yourself.

You’ve heard it from just about every T-shirt brand on the planet, “this is the best T-shirt you’ll ever put on!” It’s redundant. It’s almost meaningless. And, most importantly, it’s almost always entirely untrue.

That’s why for the past year, we’ve been putting the best T-shirts we could get our hands on for the ultimate test to decide once and for all what the best T-shirt really is. You know, so you didn’t have to. You’re welcome.

In this series, we will be rating various tees using the four categories we mentioned above:

  • Comfort
  • Versatility
  • Affordability
  • Durability

Ratings will be set on a scale between 1 and 5 to accurately depict each tee’s qualities.

Starting us off? The Everlane Premium-Weight Relaxed Crew.

Everlane Premium-Weight Relaxed Crew

The Premium-Weight Relaxed Crew is one of Everlane’s newest items for men and it’s selling like hotcakes.

This design takes Everlane’s best-selling Premium Weight Crew up a few notches by relaxing the fit by giving it a roomier take. There’s a dropped shoulder, longer sleeves than your average tee, a wider fit collar and even a wider body for a flow you never knew you needed.

The tee gives a skater-y look that’s very in high demand with men’s street fashion and has all the weight you want in a great T-shirt.

But, does it live up to the hype?

Comfort

5/5 👕

First and foremost, is the Everlane Premium-Weight Relaxed Crew comfortable? Honestly, it would be stupid to say no.

You know when you purchase a shirt that you automatically deem a pajama shirt because it’s roomier and cozier than something you’d wear out for drinks with the boys? This is that kind of shirt. But, as much as you’ll want to wear this inside where no one can see you, it’s fit for a day out on the town where everyone can.

It’s roomy, the material is as soft as you can imagine and most importantly, it doesn’t bunch up and hug you in places you don’t want to be hugged. We all know those kinds of shirts, right?

That said, we can’t give the Everlane Premium-Weight Relaxed Crew any less than a perfect rating for comfort. A solid 5 out of 5 T-shirts!

Versatility

2.5/5 👕

When talking about versatility, this tee is somewhat of a mixed bag. Sure, there are gorgeous color options out the wazoo to choose from that include whites, blacks, beiges, blues and greens which makes this a standout, but there are some other versatility issues for us that don’t quite tick the box for us. One of them being the size.

Yes, we’ve raved about the roomier size already. And don’t get us wrong, we absolutely love this shirt for that. But, the baggier size also makes this shirt somewhat of a menace. This is the kind of shirt you wear by itself. It says enough with a necklace or a watch, maybe a hat. That’s it. If you’re the kind of person that prefers wearing tees beneath your coolest fall flannel or your best crewneck sweatshirt, we’re sorry to break it to you but this ain’t your tee. In addition, the sleeves are slightly too long to wear unrolled. So, rolling up is kind of your best bet here.

Because of its baggy consistency, it becomes a bit too bunched beneath larger articles of clothing to the point that you’ll have to continuously fix it throughout your day.

Fabric and cut lean more casual which is great for most tees, and above all, it’s really easy to style, but by itself. Layering is a huge no-no. Because layering is such an essential part of T-shirt culture, we’re sadly only giving this 2.5 out of 5 T-shirts.

Affordability

3/5 👕

Alright, we have to talk about affordability.

It’s safe to say that when buying solid-colored T-shirts, most of us would like to cap it at, like $25. And that’s a true maximum. Given so many cool graphic tees are sold for around the same price, we don’t find much of a need to spend any more on something graphic-less.

And, sadly, well, the Everlane Premium-Weight Relaxed Crew is… $40. We know. We’re sad, too.

That said, there is a slight benefit. If you purchase two, the price will be $60 instead of $80, bringing the tees down to $30 a pop. While that makes things a ton better, we still can’t see past the $40 for one price point. For that, 3 out of 5 T-shirts. We’re sorry, Everlane Premium-Weight Relaxed Crew, we do still love you.

Durability

5/5 👕

At this point, durability better come in clutch, right? And, thankfully, it absolutely does.

We’re going to cut right to the chase. The Everlane Premium-Weight Relaxed Crew gets a solid 5/5 T-shirts for durability.

Why? Because this is the heavyweight material folks need in a long-lasting tee. Hands down.

This isn’t the kind of shirt you throw into the wash and expect it to shrink down to half the size you purchased it at. Instead, this shirt lasts wash after wash after wash after wash to stay as sturdy and fit just as well as the day you got it. It’s also part of Everlane’s Uniform collection which comes with a 365-day guarantee. Meaning if for whatever reason your fabric rips, tears or gets a couple of holes, Everlane will replace it if it’s been under a year. Now, how great is that?

Final Score

3.9/5 👕

To top it all off, we’re giving the Everlane Premium-Weight Relaxed Crew a solid 3.9 out of 5 stars. It has many facets that go above and beyond what you’d expect from a regular T-shirt, but it sadly does have some drawbacks you’ll have to consider.

But, should you buy it? We’re going to have to go with yes on this one. It’s unbeatably cool and comfortable with a way of being able to seriously set itself apart from the average tee.

But, is it the world’s BEST T-shirt? This time around, no — but it comes pretty close. Stay tuned to learn the best of the best and create your own opinion on the Everlane Premium-Weight Relaxed Crew using the link below.
