Self-defense for an everyday consumer can be confusing and intimidating. Many options, like a knife or a gun, can be hard to justify carrying — or just hard to carry — in many situations. But few people leave their house without their keys, which is why there’s a flourishing market of pocket-sized devices that can give you a full-size advantage in a fight for your life.

Many of these devices are simple — they’re small lengths of metal that allow you to apply force to a small area, jabbing and stabbing an attacker in a way that neutralizes their ability to hurt you. But figuring out the right one for you isn’t a no-brainer: you have to consider what situations you might be in and what you’re comfortable using.

What the Experts Say

We asked Sifu Anthony Fontana — a self-defense expert and instructor in Jeet Kun Do, boxing, Muay Thai, and several other fighting systems — to break down everything you need to know about concealable self-defense tools that will blend right in with your keys.

Fontana, who has plenty of recommendations for full-size self-defense weapons, always tells his clients — including members of the military and law enforcement — to look for tools that resemble or function like items that they already walk around with. Having things you “know how to use and know how to move with” can give you a jump start on training with these items, particularly when it’s something as small as a keychain.

Still, the key word here is training. Fontana says that if you’re going to be carrying a weapon on your person, you need to know how to use it. But first, he says, you need to “practice deploying the weapon,” which means carrying it how you would in real life, and then repeatedly drawing and readying it for combat with either hand. Fontana recommends training with any weapon you purchase at home and doing drills that are so simple you can do them while watching TV. Reps are also important here: when you have down time, he recommends sets of 10 draw-and-deploy repetitions with either hand, until that weapon becomes an extension of your own body.

You have options for what that weapon will be, however. Fontana recommends a Kubotan, or a short, pen-like piece of metal or wood that can be used to strike, puncture, or pulverize an enemy. There are more lethal attachments out there, but Fontana says a Kubotan or even small tactical flashlight are great starting options, as they’re super low-profile. “You want things to travel with that won’t draw attention or be confiscated,” Fontana says.

THE BEST KEYCHAIN KUBOTAN FOR SELF-DEFENSE

Hinderer Knives LK-1 Little Kubotan

The Kubotan is a polarizing self-defense weapon. Because of its small size and limited use, it requires some real training and intent to deploy in an effective way. However, if you go into it with a clear idea of what to look for, it’s not a bad option. A good Kubotan will function as a pressure device, maximizing the damage you do when striking a certain area, as well as adding weight to your fist for punches and other strikes. Think of it as an extension of a finger — anywhere you’d try to jab or poke an assailant, that’s where a Kubotan should be deployed (soft areas, pressure points, eyes, between ribs, et cetera). That’s where the Hinderer comes in: unlike the cheaper dime-a-dozen (literally) Kubaton keychains that are out there, the Hinderer is worth the bump in price, as you’re getting more weight from its solid brass construction in a device designed to punch and puncture. However, as with all Kubatons, beware its limited uses — you might be better off with a good tactical pen.

THE BEST KEYCHAIN-SIZED TACTICAL FLASHLIGHT

Prometheus Lights Beta QR2

The Prometheus has the essentials for a self-defense flashlight: rugged aluminum construction that makes it a makeshift Kubaton (or fist weight in a pinch), and a bright beam to disorient attackers or just light your way home — and it’s in a small enough package to fit on a keychain. There are better flashlights at that size, but few that combine the lumens of a good light with the shape of a last-ditch weapon.

The Best Self-Defense Keychains, According To Experts

THE BEST KEYCHAIN-SIZED KNIFE

Kershaw Shuffle

The Kershaw Shuffle has what everyone should be looking for in a self-defense device: multiple uses. Its multi-tool function combines a blade, a screwdriver-capable protrusion, and a bottle-opening hook. The 2.5-inch blade is small enough to hook onto a set of keys, though you’d want to keep your keys minimal so as not to interfere with the opening of the knife. It’s not the same as a full-sized concealable pocket knife, but it could be worth its weight in gold in a pinch.

You may think that the best way to brew a single cup of coffee is with one of those countertop single-serving brewers made by brands like Keurig. And while they’re certainly good at doing that, they’re not the only option—particularly if you’re trying to save on counter space.

The AeroPress is a single-serving coffee maker that is portable. It’s easy to use and requires no power at all. To make coffee, you start by placing a filter inside of the cap. You twist the cap onto the chamber. That whole thing now gets placed on top of a standard mug. You add a scoop of ground coffee into the chamber and then shake to ensure it’s all level inside the container. Pour hot water into the top over the coffee grounds and stir. Then insert the included plunger and press gently to push the hot water through the coffee grounds. At this point, you’ll now have a cup of espresso. You can then choose to add more hot water to make it a standard americano or whatever else you may feel like adding.

Perfect to keep at the office so you can make coffee at your desk and an excellent addition to your camping trip to have fresh coffee every morning. It comes with a tote bag for easy traveling. You’ll also get 350 filters, the filter cap, filter holder, stirrer, and scooper.

Normally, the coffee maker goes for $45, but for today only you can pick yourself up one for just $30. It makes an excellent gift for any coffee aficionados in your life.

You don’t have to be an avid outdoorsman, a world traveler, or a pro at DIY projects to own the best multitool. In fact, one might say you need one no matter who you are because the best multitool can seriously amp up your everyday carry. You just have to like the convenience and feeling of being prepared.

Multitools are ideal for anyone thanks to their easy-to-use designs, common-sense tools (we can never find scissors when we need them!), and affordability, making them a must-have for your suitcase, car, home or pocket.

Having the best multitool is all about being ready for the unknown, which can happen whether you’re at home, work or traveling. Multitools aren’t designed to replace your toolbox filled with full-sized screwdrivers and pliers, but they are perfect for use for small odd jobs or when you find yourself in a situation that requires a little extra help. From cutting open the packaging on a new product to tightening a loose screw on your favorite pair of sunglasses, a multitool has a use and purpose in just about any situation.

When searching for what is the best multitool, finding one that combines quality craftsmanship and portability is key. Having a poorly made multitool that breaks after its first use will hardly make you the star of your camping trip. In the same regard, you won’t want to carry your strong and durable multitool in your pocket if it’s too heavy and cumbersome. Although most multitools aren’t allowed in carry-on baggage when flying, they are permitted in checked bags.

We’ve created a comprehensive list of how to find the best multitools for every job and setting. Whether you’re looking for something better suited for small projects or a multitool that acts as a backup for everyday use, we’ve got the best multitools below.

Frequent travelers know all about luggage frustrations. Cheap suitcases rip, jam and even split down the middle. When you’re living out of your bag, having it damaged or lost by an airline is the last thing you need. That’s why so many business travelers choose to invest in arguably the best luggage on the market, the Rimowa suitcase. Thankfully, if you don’t happen to have $1,000+ to drop on your luggage, there’s also plenty of great Rimowa suitcase alternatives. But before we check those out, let’s take a look at how the Rimowa suitcase earned its top dog status in the first place.

Rimowa is a German company specializing in high-end, anodized aluminum suitcases. These rolling cases often cost $1,000 or more, but they are still incredibly popular thanks to their impressive durability and eye-catching style. Celebs, such as Jason Statham, Jessica Alba, Aaron Paul and Elle Fanning, have been spotted toting Rimowa suitcases. And, this high-end luggage brand previously called upon the likes of Rhianna and Patti Smith for a fashion campaign, which is something we can’t imagine Samsonite or AmazonBasics doing.

Is Buying a Rimowa Worth It?

You’re not alone if you’re wondering how the Rimowa suitcase justifies its hefty price tag, and what it is exactly that sets these suitcases apart from the best Rimowa competitors. Ultimately, we’d say it comes down to the company’s high quality and design. These pieces of luggage are made with total precision and the best materials. They also boast a range of noteworthy features. These include:

  • Appearance – It’s arguable that Rimowa suitcases have the most iconic appearance in the entire luggage world. The sleek aluminum finish and signature grooves make them recognizable across the airport terminal. Plus, they instantly associate the user with quality, wealth and style.
  • Lock – You won’t find a Rimowa suitcase without a TSA-approved lock. This is great for frequent fliers, as they’re a security measure recognized by airports across the USA.
  • Wheels – Rimowa suitcases have four patented Multi Wheels to allow for easy movement in all directions. These wheels make it possible to smoothly guide your suitcase by your side when it’s stood up straight or when you tilt it slightly forward to follow behind you.
  • Organization – Inside a Rimowa suitcase, you’ll find organizational features, such as compression straps for packing in all your required garments as well as zipped pockets for separating your valuables. These suitcases also feature a patented Flex-Divider system, which is unique to the brand and useful for staying organized on the road.
  • Weight – The aluminum construction of a Rimowa suitcase makes it both lightweight and highly durable. The smaller of these bags are ideal as hand luggage, as you can pick them up using the attached side or top handles while your belongings stay protected inside the hard casing. Equally, you can feel confident knowing your belongings are protected when opting for one of the larger models and checking it into the hold.
  • Durability – Another key thing about the iconic Rimowa suitcases is the airplane-sleek aluminum lasts for years without giving out. Plus, the multi-wheel system rarely jams, and the telescopic handle remains smooth, even after miles of use. These tough cases are made to last for decades.

So what is better than Rimowa? In short, not much. So if you’ve got the cash to splash, we’re confident you’ll be happy spending your hard-earned money on this tried-and-trusted luggage brand. Their top-of-the-pile standing is also why many companies have been inspired by the Rimowa case and used the design to come up with their very own luggage which is similar to Rimowa, both in carry-on and check-in forms.

If you want to take a closer look at this impressive luggage option, check out the Rimowa Original Cabin below.

From the very first time you set eyes on the YUEMAI Aluminium Alloy Luggage Hard Shell, you’ll see that it’s built to last. Looking a little more like a tank than a suitcase, this aluminum alloy case will hold strong throughout your travels. It comes in a classic silver color similar to that of a real Rimowa, and it sports a handy, keyless, TSA-approved lock built into the case. The aviation quality of the aluminum, the double bearing spinner wheels and the step-less shift lever add to the durability of this case.

MOST STYLISH

17. Travelking Aluminum Luggage Carry-On Suitcase

Coming in a choice of gray or silver, the Travelking Aluminum Luggage Carry-On Suitcase ticks all the boxes for a durable and reliable carry-on suitcase. Its attractive appearance is also very easy to pick out from a crowd. The sturdy design includes an all-aluminum construction with extra reinforcement around the corners and an alloy bumper. It boasts a 50-liter capacity which is ideal for weekends and short stays away. Furthermore, for near-unbeatable comfort through the airport, the dual-blade rubberized spinner wheels are exceptionally quiet, while the three-step handle sits at whichever height suits you best.

BEST REVIEWED

18. Monos Carry-On Pro Plus

With about 200 existing customers awarding the Monos Carry-On Pro Plus five out of five stars, you can feel confident in this suitcase as the best alternative to a real Rimowa. Plus, while it’s still one of the more expensive bags on our list, it’s still a fraction of the cost of the real deal. This solution to traveling in style is available in a wide variety of colors, including two attractive special edition designs. You’ll also find that Monos makes their suitcases with the same attention to detail as a Rimowa, which is why this newer suitcase brand has a growing popularity and a sparkling reputation.

rimowa suitcase alternatives tumi

BEST SPLURGE

19. Tumi Aluminum International Expandable Spinner

Tumi is one of the hottest names in luggage at the moment. They make quality cases that can last a lifetime, much like a real Rimowa. However, a Tumi case is about half the price of the $1000+ bags. This attractive bag is made from durable aluminum and comes in three muted colors. The case itself is expandable thanks to the brand’s Lever Lock System, and it comes fitted with a TSA-approved combination lock to keep your belongings safe throughout your journey.

rimowa suitcase alternatives the jaunt

LIGHTWEIGHT PICK

20. The Jaunt by Roam

Roam is another newcomer to the luggage industry, but the brand is quickly making a name for itself thanks to its lightweight, feature-heavy bags. The Jaunt weighs just 7.3 pounds, making it one of the lightest on our list. It’s also one of the most waterproof, thanks to its water-repellent zipper and water-resistant fabric lining. Other features include a telescoping handle with four height settings, smooth ball bearing wheels and a TSA-approved combination lock. And while it doesn’t feature the aluminum, grooved exterior that makes the Rimowa famous, the dual-color appearance of this Roam case is equally as attractive.

Most travelers are familiar with Away’s hardside luggage, backed by an impressive lifetime warranty and thousands of positive reviews. But the company’s signature etched-line suitcase shells just got a fancy upgrade with the release of the Aluminum Edition, so naturally, I had to try it. Recently, I got my hands on one of the Away Aluminum Carry-On bags and am here to report that’s uber sleek.

SPY has ranked Away products highly in the past for their fantastic weekender bag, for their lightweight luggage, as well as the best carry-on luggage in general. But the Aluminum Edition adds a whole lot of class to an already great lineup with its timeless metallic design that is as pretty as it is functional.

But after using my new Away Aluminum Carry-On, The Bigger Carry-On, to be exact, this might be my favorite splurge. Why? Let’s get into my honest Away Aluminum Carry-On Review.

away the bigger carry on suitcase aluminum edition

Away The Bigger Carry-On, Aluminum Edition

Pros

  • Sleek, sharp-looking aluminum shell
  • Lifetime warranty and 100-day test trial
  • Can double as storage in your home
  • Four sizes to build a full set
  • Accessories like 360-degree wheels, laundry back, TSA-approved locks, and ejectable USB charger

Cons

  • Scratches and dents easily
  • Very pricey
  • Limited color choices
  • Doesn’t expand

What is the Away Aluminum Carry-On Aluminum Edition

The Away Aluminum Carry-On (The Bigger size) is simply a new design iteration of the brand’s already-popular suitcase. It is made with a durable and modern aluminum shell that offers a beautiful sheen and added layer of hardness to protect your belongings from the elements of airline travel.

In addition to the “Bigger” size, Away offers the Aluminum Edition in The Large, The Medium, and their standard Carry-On models. It is also available in three colors: onyx black, silver, and rose gold.

Other than appearance, the main difference between the Aluminum Edition versus Away’s other options is its lack of zippers. Yes — this contraption uses twin locks to adjoin both sides, giving it more of a trunk feel. It also boasts leather-trimmed handles with a slow-release spring that allows them to fold down gently against the side of the bag.

What Does the Away Aluminum Carry-On Promise?

Aside from a lifetime warranty, Away offers an unrivaled 100-day trial period during which customers can test a suitcase and decide if it’s the one for them. This is a huge game-changer and what allowed the company to distinguish itself among the best luggage brands and emerge as one of the most respected travel brands in the world.

What Comes with the Away Aluminum Carry-On?

Customers can bank on receiving all of the accessories that come with any Away suitcase purchase — interior compression straps to keep belongings compact, a laundry bag to separate dirty clothes while traveling, 360-degree wheels for smooth handling, dual TSA combination locks for peace of mind, and an optional USB charger that you can use to juice up your phone (for an additional $20).

Highlights of the Away Aluminum Carry-On

Aside from being aesthetically pleasing and flaunting a different finish than most mainstream carry-on options, I just loved using the suitcase. This carry-on glides like a dream on most floor surfaces and conveniently fits in any overhead compartment, even The Bigger Carry-On size. The USB charger is also convenient (though gate agents will make you remove it prior to boarding) and can operate independently from the suitcase.

close up of the away aluminum carry on suitcase and how it looks like an old fashioned trunk

Perhaps my favorite feature is that this product doubles as a piece of home storage when not in use. Since it gives the appearance of a modern trunk (especially with its latches and lack of zippers), it can sit out in any living space and feel as if it’s an intentional part of the decor. This is ideal for those living in larger cities with smaller apartments, as luggage typically takes up too much of that highly-coveted closet or under-bed space.

We’d be remiss not to reiterate the wonders of Away’s lifetime warranty and 100-day trial. Having the peace of mind that something expensive can be replaced takes one less stressor off the already-stressful act of traveling.

Criticisms of the Away Aluminum Carry-On

Price, of course, is of serious concern, as this particular model will set you back a cool $665. Is this investment worth it? Well, that entirely depends upon your budget, lifestyle, and travel schedule. Jetsetters will surely be able to justify the purchase, as it will be used often and pay for itself over time. A more financially conservative customer may opt for less expensive alternatives (or the company’s cheaper offerings).

a close up of the away aluminum carry on luggage

Also, aluminum immediately shows signs of wear and tear. While Away markets this as an intentional design decision to highlight the “marks and signs of your time together,” you’re obviously not going to remember where the dings and scratches come from, which can be quite bothersome to anyone who is a bit of a perfectionist.

Lastly, we’d love to see the aluminum in additional color options. Imagine a gold, hunter green, navy, or even copper with a metallic finish. We’re sure this is something that will happen down the road, but it’s something to note if you are looking for a specific shade to match a pre-existing collection.

The Verdict: Should You Buy An Away Aluminum Carry-On?

If you’re a self-proclaimed travel guru who has essentially become one with your suitcase, this is the splurge for you. It’s sleek, it’s dependable, and it’s backed by the warranty that made Away luggage famous.

While it’s certainly expensive, keep in mind that it can be so much more than a suitcase with its ability to double as an aesthetically pleasing piece of storage in any home. Although, if you think you’ll be concerned with the inevitable dings and dents, opt for the black onyx color because it will most likely be the most discreet.

And at the end of the day, you feel cool while lugging it. It serves as a trendy, though classic accessory like a Gucci belt or Louis Vuitton duffle that will always be in style.

The Cyber Monday sales have officially arrived, and they are too good to miss, so load up that shopping cart. Or should we say that Rockland carry-on luggage — which has just received another round of discounts for the final day of sale shopping.

SPY has been keeping an eye out to bring you the best Cyber Monday deals, especially the ones whose prices dropped significantly following our Black Friday sale coverage. Today, Rockland’s lightweight three-piece luggage sets are discounted even more — this time chopping 60% off. And now is the time to grab your wallet because the sale won’t last beyond the next 24 hours.

We’ve covered the best carry-on luggage and brands with the most lightweight luggage that makes it easier to travel, and Rockland has made the cut in both instances. Hosting a Holiday Heist? Rimowa’s Newest Poker Briefcase Has You Covered https://spy.com/articles/gear/travel-gear/rimowa-poker-attache-1202901288/ https://spy.com/articles/gear/travel-gear/rimowa-poker-attache-1202901288/#respond Tue, 08 Nov 2022 16:00:00 +0000 https://spy.com/?p=1202901288 Our editors independently select the products we recommend. If you weren’t already planning on joining a top-secret underground gambling ring this holiday season, now is your chance. Rimowa just released a limited edition Poker Attache that may look like it holds a pile of drug money inside, but actually just includes a set of professional poker chips.

Gone are the days of schlepping your chips in a plastic bag thanks to this sleek, aluminum carrying case that looks straight out of your favorite heist movie.

New Product: Rimowa's Poker Briefcase is Ready for a Holiday Heist

Rimowa Poker Attache

Rimowa has thought of it all. The near $5,000 suitcase not only includes 350 poker chips, it also features a velvet poker mat and removable leather pouch to store the velvet mat when not in use. It also includes one silver aluminum Dealer chip, 6 silver aluminum dice, and two packs of cards. If you know someone who’s looking to enter their Men in Black era, this set would make the perfect gift.

A poker set worth thousands of dollars from a luggage company might have you wondering: what’s going on at Rimowa HQ? But need not fear. Rimowa, it seems, thrives in chaos.

Earlier this year the German company announced a partnership with LeBron James in creating a 12-bottle wine-carrying case. The massive wine-carrying case will reportedly cost $9,900 and will be available to purchase in late November. Where is LeBron going and why does he need 12 bottles of wine? Rimowa doesn’t care! Style doesn’t need to make sense.

If you can’t wait until November to roll your 12 favorite wines to the neighborhood potluck, Rimowa currently offers a single wine bottle carrying case. Just make sure to grab 12 of them if you can’t make do with the one bottle of wine. The One Bottle Case features the classic Rimowa grooved aluminum design and an attached TSA-approved lock so no one will be sipping any Pinot without your permission.

Rimowa has a history of collaborating with an eclectic group of celebrities. Rimowa spokespeople have included singer-songwriter Patti Smith, Rihanna, Roger Federer and LeBron. The company released an ad narrated by Smith last year featuring all four celebrities.

So if you’re looking to give the ultimate gift to the Rihanna or Roger Federer fan in your life, check out Rimowa’s arsenal of aluminum products ranging from classic, exceptional luggage, to bizarre, indulgent poker kits.

The 32 Best Carry-On Backpacks That Will Fit Under Your Airplane Seat https://spy.com/feature/best-tsa-approved-backpacks-carry-on-luggage-112696/ https://spy.com/feature/best-tsa-approved-backpacks-carry-on-luggage-112696/#respond Tue, 25 Oct 2022 20:15:08 +0000 http://spy.com/?p=112696 Our editors independently select the products we recommend. It doesn’t matter whether you’re heading off for a weekend getaway or traveling for a year, any trip to the airport is usually accompanied by several anxiety-filled moments. Traffic, long lines at check-in, and finding out your bags are too heavy to travel definitely rank high on this list. That’s why it’s a good idea to do everything you can to minimize the chances of something going wrong when you get to the airport. One easy answer is to pack your belongings in one of the best TSA-approved backpacks and carry-ons.

While you may remember a time when luggage issues mainly concerned your checked bags, ever-changing rules for carry-on bags mean that no travelers — even ones with just carry-on bags alone — escape the fear of luggage-related issues. When looking for the best travel backpacks, it’s wise to consider whether your travel bag of choice will actually fit under an airplane seat or inside the overhead compartment. Keep in mind that the former is considered a personal item, while the latter is a carry-on bag.

How to Determine if Your Backpack Meets Carry-On Requirements

If you’re worried your carry-on won’t fit the TSA requirements for taking it on the plane, there are a number of ways to deal with the problem. First, check the carry-on baggage restrictions for your specific airline to ensure your bag falls within the measurements provided for TSA-approved travel backpacks.

Alternatively, invest in a bag that has been made specifically with TSA and airline personal item requirements in mind. Personal items are smaller than carry-ons, so you’ll be in the safe zone to ensure that bag is permitted on the plane. Such bags and backpacks should be small enough to fit under the seat in front of you while still maintaining the comfort and durability you expect. Although the dimensions may vary, in general, the space under an airplane seat can accommodate backpacks 18-inches long, 14-inches wide and 8-inches high. For example, here are the maximum personal item sizes for a few of the biggest airlines in the USA (as of May 2023):

  • American Airlines: 18 x 14 x 8 inches
  • Southwest Airlines: 16.5 x 13.5 x 8 inches
  • United Airlines: 17 x 10 x 9 inches
  • JetBlue: 17 x 13 x 8 inches
  • Frontier Airlines: 18 x 14 x 8 inches
  • Spirit Airlines: 18 x 14 x 8 inches

To make finding airline-friendly backpacks easier, we’ve put together a list of the 32 best carry-on backpacks available online. This list also includes several of the best TSA-approved laptop backpacks. To find yours, simply choose the one that fits your carry-on needs, and enjoy an anxiety-free experience the next time you’re airport-bound.

1. Fjallraven Kanken Laptop Backpack

BEST OVERALL

The Fjallraven Kanken Classic is ubiquitous in airports today, but that’s not the best possible backpack for travel necessarily (although you’ll find it later on this list). Instead, if you’re looking for the best TSA-approved backpacks that will fit under your seat, we recommend upgrading to the Fjallraven Kanken Laptop 15-Inch Backpack. Like other bags from this Swedish company, the Kanken Laptop bag comes in a variety of fun colors; however, it features enough room for your large laptop and travel essentials.

In addition to the primary laptop compartment, this travel backpack comes with three additional pockets. It’s constructed from a dirt- and water-resistant material and a two-way zipper. Durable handles let you easily carry this down a cramped airplane aisle, while the compact design lets you slip it under your feet or overhead. If the Graphite color (pictured below) isn’t to your liking, check out the plum or acorn design instead. Especially for all the student travelers out there, this makes a great college travel backpack.

2. Vancropak Flight Approved Carry-On Backpack

The popular pack, which has five-star ratings from more than 80% of Amazon users, includes an expandable front to increase the bag’s capacity. In addition, the backpack features hide-able straps so you can use the bag more like a holdall. Other notable elements include an anti-theft pocket, inner elastic straps for security, and lightweight construction which is both resistant to water and scratches.

Featuring external pockets, a laptop sleeve, and a power bank, this bag can be used as both an everyday office bag and a travel backpack. Plus, this backpack’s slim profile should fit comfortably under even the smallest airplane seat. While this travel bag isn’t nearly as stylish as our favorite options from Timbuk2, Herschel, Fjallraven, or Killspencer, it has a straightforward design and killer reviews. For the money, this is the best travel backpack you’ll find under $30.

5. Paravel Foldable Travel Backpack

The Paravel brand is one of the newest in the travel market, but it’s making waves thanks to its sustainable practices. Most of their bags are made from recycled materials such as plastic bottles. And, because of these practices, Paravel has become a favorite among celebs like Oprah and Kim K. That’s why the Paravel Foldable Travel Backpack was a must-add to our list of the best carry-on backpacks. The best part? It folds down into a compact pouch for storage in your bigger suitcase if you don’t need it on the way to your destination.

And unlike many other Jansport backpacks, this one has a padded laptop sleeve for protecting your electronics.

21. Monos Metro Backpack

EDITOR’S PICK

The Monos Metro Backpack is our e-commerce editor Tyler Schoeber’s go-to when traveling far and wide. “I recently took it to my parent’s place for a short trip to celebrate my brother’s 22nd birthday, but before that, it was perfect for shoving right under the passenger seat in front of me on a recent weekend trip I took to Houston,” he says, “it’s a bag I absolutely think everyone should own.”

With numerous interior pockets for keeping all of your belongings both safe and organized, you won’t lose anything in this bad boy. Additionally, the Metro Backpack opens up flat the same way a carry-on bag would, so you can see everything you packed at once. 25. TUMI Carson Backpack

BEST WITH OTHER LUGGAGE

The TUMI Carson Backpack was built for travel. In fact, one of the defining features of this bag is its back sleeve, which allows users to slip it over the telescopic handle of any other suitcase. Furthermore, the bag itself boasts a number of interior and exterior pockets, including a laptop sleeve with its own zippered closure.

26. Tortuga Outbreaker Backpack

BEST ALTERNATIVE

For light packers, cramming everything into a single backpack is a point of pride. Of course, not all carry-on backpacks are up to the challenge. But whether you’ve mastered the art of light packing or not, the Outbreaker Backpack will make you feel like a packing professional. That’s because this travel backpack can be unzipped and packed just like a suitcase. That makes it the perfect companion for a weekend getaway or short business trip.

Like your favorite piece of luggage, this travel backpack is also expandable. However, even at its smaller size, this large men’s bag is at the outer limit of what will fit underneath an airplane seat. Measuring in at 20” x 13” x 8”, this bag may poke out from underneath the seat by one or two inches. You can probably get away with it, but a particularly observant flight attendant may ask you to stow this bag overhead. Still, with an ultra-durable construction, expandable design, and 35L capacity, this backpack is the ultimate replacement for your bulky suitcase.

27. GORUCK GR1

BEST FOR CITY BREAKS

The GORUCK GR1 is an ideal choice for weekend city breaks but, in reality, it can go just about any place you want to take it, including war zones. The GORUCK is called such because it’s designed to ruck (as in getting your gear safely from point A to point B). This is arguably the toughest everyday pack in existence. The company openly states how impressively water resistant it is, and you’ll find a range of pockets inside, including three internal pockets, one elasticated pocket, and a large mesh pocket too. There’s MOLLE webbing on the inside and outside for additional customization, and the bag includes a removable, hard plastic frame, which helps to stabilize the built-in laptop compartment when it’s in place.

Now that’s smart luggage design!

However, what it has in style, it lacks in space. Still, this bag boasts one large main pocket and three other smaller pockets on the front and sides. As an added bonus, the bag has a slip-through sleeve on the back for attaching it to your other suitcase as well as a concealable luggage tag.

I Camp at a Music Festival Every Year: Here Are the Festival Camping Essentials I Can’t Live Without https://spy.com/articles/gear/travel-gear/what-to-bring-camping-music-festival-1202878382/ https://spy.com/articles/gear/travel-gear/what-to-bring-camping-music-festival-1202878382/#respond Thu, 18 Aug 2022 23:00:57 +0000 https://spy.com/?p=1202878382 Our editors independently select the products we recommend. We may earn a commission on items bought through our links.

I love music festivals of all sorts, but if there’s anything I love more than the festival itself, it’s the camping experience that comes with it. There’s something incomparable about waking up covered in dried sweat from the previous day, sprawled against your closest friends in a clammy tent, brushing your teeth with a water bottle and pregaming your favorite artists by listening to playlists hours before you see them live. It’s a kind of happiness I can’t find elsewhere.

But if there’s anything I’ve learned about camping at music festivals, it’s that improperly setting up your campsite could make the camping experience atrocious. I know it because I’ve lived it.

I’ve been attending Firefly Music Festival in Dover, Delaware, for the past six years (minus 2020, of course). My friends and I started our experience, well, inexperienced. But now, we roll up to the campsite like professionals with everything we could need for those just-in-case scenarios. And trust me, those just-in-case scenarios happen.

Over the past few years, we’ve gone through it all. We’ve slept on wet ground, we’ve slept in the car after our tent entirely blew away, and we’ve even been fully robbed of lots of our essentials (for that, consider locking anything of value in your car and covering it with blankets). That said, I’ve had a lot of experience camping at music festivals, so I know exactly which camping supplies you need to ensure your time on the campgrounds goes smoothly.

From the best coolers to essentials that prevent your camping tent from blowing away or getting wet, check out everything you’ll need for camping at your next music festival.

1. A Tent + Rainfly Awning

This one seems obvious, but you’ll need a tent when camping. More importantly, you will need a tent with a rainfly awning when camping at a festival (with Coachella being the one possible exception). Most tents come with a sun dome mesh top that will allow sleepers to gaze at the stars. While cute, it’s irrational. You won’t be in your tent unless you’re sleeping or changing during the festival. The rainfly awning will keep all rain out of your tent, so you and your items stay dry. Coleman is the brand I go with because I trust them beyond belief. This tent can hold three people comfortably, but you can squeeze in four if necessary.

Keep in mind: Most music festivals utilize campsites the size of elongated parking spots. Be sure to look up camping at the festival you’re attending, so the tent you purchase does not exceed the size requirements.

2. A Tarp

Any of you who have been camping before know that even if it doesn’t rain, the bottom of your tent will get wet. Even on a dry weekend, the ground is almost always saturated with water. Throw a tarp the same size underneath your tent before you set it up, and you’ll be good to go the entire weekend.

Keep in mind: You don’t need to spend an arm and a leg on your tarp; any cheap tarp will do just fine. In addition, make sure you don’t get one that’s too big or too small. Too small obviously won’t cover the underside of your tent, and too big will have you folding or cutting your tarp too many times for the proper fit.

3. Heavy-Duty Tent Stakes

Every tent comes with tent stakes, but most tent stakes sort of suck. Get a pair of heavy-duty tent stakes so your tent doesn’t blow away. Even if the weekend calls for no wind, stake your tent. It’s not worth the risk.

Keep in mind: If you plan on taking a tent you’ve used many times, be sure to count how many tent stakes you have a few days before leaving. Stakes are often lost when dismantling and putting away tents from previous trips. You don’t want to get to the music festival and be without any tent stakes!

4. Portable Power Station

You use your phone a million times a day, and that will not stop when camping at a music festival. Sure, there will likely be areas throughout the campgrounds where charging stations are available, but these are often way too overcrowded. We suggest bringing a portable power station like the Jackery Explorer 300 Portable Power Station to juice up directly from your tent. These are long-lasting so that you can charge through the weekend. I brought one of these camping last year. It charged six phones at different times and numerous portable speakers, and the power station was still running on around 85% battery when the weekend was over.

Keep in mind: Charge the power station before bringing your trip to ensure you get the longest possible lifespan. In addition, when you’re not at the campsite, this is something you want to lock in your car. This is a high-ticket item people will most certainly want to get their hands on.

5. A Wheeled Cooler

Food and drinks inside of any music festival are way too expensive. Keep a cooler filled with ice, drinks and some snacks. A wheeled cooler is the best option for a music festival because it is easy to push around. You’ll want to keep your cooler in the shade. YETI is the best brand to go with because of how incredibly cold it keeps whatever you have inside the cooler. You’ll add new ice less frequently than with most other coolers.

Keep in mind: Do not wait every morning on festival grounds for iced coffee; purchase some and keep it in your cooler along with your favorite creamer. Thank me later.

6. A Canopy

Hear me out: You’ll spend more time than you think at your campsite. Sure, you paid for the festival, but the campsite is where you pregame, get ready for the concert, relax, eat and more. You will need some shade while there. Every single group camping correctly will bring a canopy. It’s essential for keeping cool and having fun pre- and post-concert.

Keep in mind: Make sure this canopy matches the guidelines for size requirements of your campsite. Look online to make sure that your tent will fit!

7. Full-Length Mirror

My group brings a full-length mirror every year when camping at a music festival. Why? To see if our festival outfits are looking top-notch. You need to check yourself out when getting ready, and it’s hard to do with just the camera on your smartphone. Pick up a cheap full-length mirror for under $10 from Target, lean it against the front of your car and get exactly what you need to get ready the right way.

Remember: Many festival campsites will not allow mirrors on the premises due to fear of glass shatter. I can tell you that every year we’ve brought one, we’ve never had a problem. Regardless, keep the mirror on the discreet side just in case.

8. A Drinking Game

Not everyone camping at the music festival will be drinking alcohol, but it’s safe to say that the majority will be. Pick up one of the best drinking games to help you pregame the festival at your campsite. “These Cards Will Get You Drunk” is a game I’ve brought once or twice when camping at a music festival and have always been a serious hit.

Keep in mind: Drinking games are an excellent way to help you befriend your camping neighbors, so if you want to make some pals that will last a lifetime, consider bringing something along.

9. Fold-Out Table

While we’re on the topic of drinking games, you need a fold-out table. Yes, lots of people play drinking games like beer pong and flip cup when pregaming at their campsites which means you will need a table, but a table is also important for keeping various items such as snacks, drinks, glitter, sunscreen, etc. This, essentially, should be your local grocery store.

Keep in mind: While fold-out tables are quite big, we suggest packing this as one of the first items at the bottom of your trunk so you can lay everything else flatly on top of it.

Buy: Fold-Out Table $78.49

10. A Lantern

Normally, we’d say your iPhone flashlight is the best flashlight you can use — because how often are you really using a flashlight? Almost never. Plus, your phone is way too convenient. That’s not the case when camping at a music festival, though. A lantern is needed for hanging out at night, which we’re most certainly sure you’re going to do. In addition, this is needed for heading out to the bathroom and changing in your tent at night.

Keep in mind: Bugs, of course, tend to love these lights. Therefore, be sure to bring some bug spray.

Buy: LE LED Camping Lantern $26.99 (orig. $29.99) 10% OFF

11. Toilet Paper

Here’s one you absolutely can’t forget. Sure, the bathrooms or porta-potties on the campground will have toilet paper, but that’s never promised. Most of the time, there isn’t much toilet paper at all. Be sure to bring more than enough rolls to the campground.

Keep in mind: I suggest bringing toilet paper to the bathroom every time you go on the campground. The worst feeling in the world is waiting on that bathroom line, doing your business and realizing there’s no TP left. It’s a nightmare of an experience.

Buy: Amazon Basics 2-Ply Toilet Paper $25.21

12. Travel Bidet

While I’ve never actually brought a travel bidet when camping at a music festival, this year might be the first time I actually do. I finally own a bidet of my own and swear by it. So much so, that when I have to use the restroom in public, I hate that I do not have access to a bidet. This travel bidet will hopefully make me feel as clean as I do at home this year, even though as previously mentioned, the bathroom situations are always filthy.

Keep in mind: While this product isn’t necessary because a lot of Americans still aren’t using bidets (which, like, you absolutely should be), it’s sure to give you peace of mind when knowing how dirty the rest of your body likely is.

13. A Pop-Up Restroom

To start us off, no, this isn’t for number two, this is for number one. While guys can pee just about anywhere publically and have no fear, that’s not the same case for women. These pop-up restrooms are always a smart purchase if you’re traveling with a lot of people that do not feel comfortable peeing out in the open. Most of the time, port-o-potties are a bit of a hike, so these will come in handy when you least expect it. I’ve known some people who have placed buckets inside and others that just keep it in between their cars for a quick go.

Keep in mind: You don’t have to use this for urination. You can also use this as a quick changing tent if your tent is on the tinier side.

what to bring camping at a music festival, A Pop-Up Restroom

Buy: A Pop-Up Restroom $39.99

14. Water Jugs

No, I don’t buy these water jugs every year for drinking. Typically, my friends and I purchase around four or five of these to use scarcely throughout the weekend on the campsite for non-drinking purposes. Whether it’s brushing teeth, washing hands, washing your face or taking a “shower” with your swimsuit on, these water jugs saved us many times throughout our experience camping at music festivals. When heading into the actual festival, we will typically take refillable water bottles to carry around for easy refilling.

Keep in mind: While we suggest throwing some of these in the cooler to keep water refreshing, we also recommend leaving some out in the sun for washing your hands and face. Nothing like lukewarm water when cleansing!

The Best Electric Skateboards Will Get You Where You’re Going Without Eating Up Space https://spy.com/articles/gear/travel-gear/best-electric-skateboards-cheap-189108/ https://spy.com/articles/gear/travel-gear/best-electric-skateboards-cheap-189108/#respond Tue, 21 Jun 2022 17:00:13 +0000 http://spy.com/?p=189108 Our editors independently select the products we recommend. Getting around a city without a car has never been easier. Admittedly, most public transit systems and pedestrian pathways could be improved, and many cities still focus on building car-centric infrastructure. But these days, there are plenty of options for people looking to efficiently get around without an automobile. One option is to look into “micromobility” with small vehicles like electric scooters, bicycles — and electric skateboards.

For most people without a car, public transit is the answer. But even the best public transit systems have issues with unreliability and problems related to the “last mile,” the gap between the bus stop or train station and your front door. Shared scooters like Bird or Lime may be great for quick trips, but regular use (if you can find them regularly) can add up in fees.

A skateboard is arguably one of the best options for last-mile commuting. Unlike bikes or even scooters, you don’t have to worry about storage. And you can reach your destination with a minimum of effort and a maximum of efficiency with an electric skateboard.

There are a few brands worth knowing in the electric skateboard market, including Evolve, which offers high-quality boards, and MEEPO, which has a range of more affordable options.

Whether you’re a seasoned rider or looking to shake up your commute, we’ve rounded up the best electric skateboards on the market to meet your specific needs, based on research and reviews.

1. Backfire G2

BEST OVERALL

Backfire’s G2 board delivers plenty of power for the everyday rider, and it’s the brand’s entry-level electric skateboard. The board has a range of up to 12.5 miles and a speed of up to 24 mph. Though there are faster boards with a longer range out there, this board has plenty of speed and battery for the average user. Plus, the remote has a convenient LCD screen that displays speed and battery.

2. Evolve Hadean Bamboo All Terrain

BEST UPGRADE

The trouble with skateboards is that, because they’re close to the ground, they can struggle with uneven terrain. Evolve’s Hadean board is designed for conquering difficult and uneven terrain. This is one of the more expensive options on the market, but its powerful motor allows you to conquer any hill and achieve a maximum speed of 26 mph.

3. Exway Wave Riot

BEST BATTERY DESIGN

The Exway Wave Riot stands out for its small size and easy portability. But Exway packs a lot into a small package. This board has a top speed of 23 mph and features RGB lighting to be easily seen when riding in the dark. One of the best features of this board is the quick-swap battery. If you have an extra battery and forgot to charge your board, or you just want to get more range on a longer ride, you can swap your battery in as little as 10 seconds.

4. Teamgee H20 39″ Electric Skateboard

BEST VALUE

Teamgee is a good option if you’re looking for a relatively affordable electric skateboard. The boards have a top speed of 26 mph and a total range of 18 miles. For extra power, this board is equipped with a dual motor. The PU wheels are removable, making them easier to replace when they wear out.

5. MEEPO Mini 2

BEST COMPACT BOARD

All skateboards are pretty portable, but they’re not all this portable. The MEEPO Mini Dual Electric Skateboard is a great compact option for daily rides. It has a 7-mile range, which is more than sufficient for the average commute or daily trip and can reach a top speed of 19 mph.

6. OneWheel Pint X

BEST MONO WHEEL

Admittedly, this isn’t exactly a skateboard; skateboards have four wheels, and the OneWheel has just the one. Still, it’s a fun option and the riding stance is not dissimilar to that of an electric skateboard. The Pint X is the brand’s smaller, more affordable option. It clocks in at a top speed of 18 mph and has a range of 12 to 18 miles.
