An unfortunate side effect of owning a pet is having to trim their nails. An unfortunate side effect of being a pet is having your nails trimmed — especially if you can’t stop scratching the furniture. The Casfuy Dog Nail Grinder, which is discounted this Amazon Prime Day, makes this process as painless as possible. It’s a rechargeable electronic nail trimmer with a hard diamond tip to allow for gentle pet nail removal — all without the hassle or stress of a clipper, which could split the nail, cut the paw pad, or cause your dog or cat discomfort (and cause you unwanted stress).

Casfuy Dog Nail Grinder Upgraded – Professional 2-Speed Electric Rechargeable Pet Nail Trimmer Painless Paws Grooming & Smoothing for Small Medium Large Dogs & Cats (6 Colors)

The Casfuy also has two speeds and a low vibration, for those pets who really hate getting their nails trimmed. SPY’s assistant managing editor, Emma Wenninger, grew up with four dogs, and is now the owner of two cats. She’s used every pet nail trimmer under the sun, and she will always come back to a nail grinder, especially for dogs. “Dog and cat paw pads are so sensitive,” she says. “It’s best for both you and them to keep the nail trimming process as painless and quick as possible. A nail grinder like this one will do just that.”

Dogs are adorable. Dogs can also get pretty gross after a day of adventures. Whether they played in the mud or happened to roll in something unpleasant, it’s important for pet owners to know how to bathe their canine companions. Also, bath time has many other benefits besides odor reduction, like removing dead hair and skin, reducing shedding, and keeping their coat shiny and clean.

When thinking about what shampoo to use, though, it might come naturally to reach for whatever is lying around the house. Don’t do that. Human shampoo is not a good idea, since dogs’ skin has a different pH balance. “It’s important to make sure that the products are specifically made for dogs and that pet parents are not using baby shampoos, human shampoos, or dish soap, as these are not specifically formulated for dog skin,” says Andrew Levine, a Boston-based veterinarian and owner of the Jamaica Plain Animal Hospital. “Frequency of bathing is very dependent on your dog’s skin, degree of itchiness, and healthiness of their hair,” he adds.

So how do you decide on the best dog shampoo for a specific canine? Read on to find out.

What to Consider When Buying Dog Shampoo

Ingredients: Avoid artificial scents and ingredients like alcohol, dyes, and parabens. Opt for naturally derived ingredients when possible. Honey, aloe, and oatmeal bases are all soothing choices.

Age: Puppies may require a more mild shampoo — many of which are formulated specifically for younger dogs.

Allergies: Dogs with sensitive skin or allergies are better off with a hypoallergenic or medicated shampoo.

Breed: “Some breeds are more susceptible to dry skin and thus may benefit from less frequent grooming,” says licensed vet technician Amber LaRock. Different breed types require different bathing frequencies and shampoo types, so check in with your vet regardless.

What the Experts Say

For this story, SPY interviewed multiple veterinarians about the benefits of dog shampoos and what to look for when shopping. “Finding the right dog shampoo can make the difference between a healthy, hydrated coat and uncomfortable or itchy skin,” says LaRock. “Natural ingredients without harsh chemicals are less likely to irritate your pup’s skin during their bath and can help promote overall skin and coat health.”

Paola Cuevas, a veterinarian with Petkeen.com, agrees. “The most important part when shopping for a dog’s shampoo is recognizing what ingredients to avoid,” she says. What’s on that list? “Parabens are commonly used as preservatives to extend the shelf life of shampoos and prevent fungal growth, but they’re also synthetic, ecotoxic substances linked to hormonal disruption,” she explains. “Phthalates are used to bond fragrances to other ingredients in the shampoo but are also recognized as carcinogenic. Sulfates are harsh, synthetic cleaners that strip the skin of its natural oils and cause irritation, dry skin, and itching. Lastly, propylene glycol is a double alcohol that’s been linked to skin irritation and organ toxicity.”

With this in mind, read on for the best dog shampoos available now.

Earthbath Oatmeal & Aloe Shampoo bottle against white background

BEST OVERALL

Earthbath Aloe and Oatmeal Pet Shampoo

Why It Stands Out: As a brand, Earthbath stands out for its use of plant-derived ingredients and its commitment to sustainability and responsible manufacturing practices. This particular shampoo smells heavenly and its clean, gentle formula is free of soap, gluten, parabens, synthetic dyes, DEA, and sulfates.

Made For: While it’s not fully hypoallergenic, this shampoo is suitable for dogs with sensitive or dry skin, removing dirt and debris while adding hydration.

This shampoo can clean and moisturize a dog’s dry, sensitive skin without washing off any topical flea treatments. While it may cost slightly more than the average brand, Earthbath’s eco-friendly values — plus the fact that this bottle should last around a year — make this worthy of the best overall dog shampoo. Also, its subtle vanilla and almond scent is great.

Cuevas endorses it, too. “This is a highly moisturizing, soap-free shampoo,” she says.
“Thanks to colloidal oatmeal and aloe vera, this organic shampoo is soothing and relieves irritated, itchy skin. It leaves a soft, moisturized, and naturally clean coat without causing any harm to the environment.”

TropiClean Luxury 2-in-1 Papaya shampoo bottle against white background

BEST 2-IN-1

TropiClean 2-in-1 Papaya & Coconut Dog Shampoo and Conditioner

Why It Stands Out: One of the most popular natural pet shampoos that’s also cat-friendly, dogs will smell like a tropical smoothie after being rinsed off with this 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner. With a papaya and coconut base, pet parents will love its light and fruity scent as well as its dandruff-fighting abilities and silky soft results. The brand also offers a deep-cleaning version for dogs with thick double coats

Made For: Long-haired and short-haired dogs 12 weeks and older who need a more convenient solution than separate shampoos and conditioners. Suitable for dogs with dry skin or dandruff.

Honest Paws Dry Shampoo for Dogs against white background

BEST WATERLESS

Honest Paws Dog Waterless Shampoo

Why It Stands Out: This no-rinse dry shampoo can get dogs clean fast without the headache of getting them in the shower and leaving wet paw prints all over the house. The oatmeal and lavender base is soothing on dry skin and provides a convenient solution for stinky dogs. The eco-friendly formula is also free of synthetic fragrances, dyes, parabens, and phthalates.

Made For: A smart solution for travelers, pets who dread bath time, or pets that need a quick (and cost-effective) clean between washes.

Burtes Bees Oatmeal Shampoo for dogs against white background

BEST BUDGET

Burt's Bees for Dogs Natural Oatmeal Shampoo

Why It Stands Out: This affordable shampoo from Burt’s Bees is pH-balanced and non-irritating, thanks to a base of colloidal oat flour, honey, and beeswax. These ingredients work together to calm and gently cleanse doggie skin. Bonus: the formula is 100% fragrance-free and sulfate-free.

“This is a moisturizing shampoo that can help relieve very dry skin,” adds Cuevas. “However, the consistency of this shampoo is a little watery and there is no enjoyable ‘freshly bathed dog’ smell left behind,” she adds (which makes sense, since it’s fragrance-free).

Made For: Pet owners who are looking for a more affordable alternative to Earthbath that’s still appropriate for sensitive skin and doesn’t contain artificial ingredients.

Veterinary Formula Clinical Care Antiseptic & Antifungal shampoo against white background

BEST MEDICATED

Veterinary Formula Clinical Care Antiseptic and Antifungal Medicated Shampoo for Dogs & Cats

Why It Stands Out: Veterinary Formula is one of the most reliable brands for medicated dog shampoos, and it’s stocked at most veterinary clinics around the nation. Designed to alleviate greasy or scaly red skin, this unscented and soap-free wash costs less than $10 and can help dogs with sensitive skin or allergies feel more comfortable. The brand also offers a version designed specifically for hot spots and itches. Lastly, this pH-balanced formula is gentle to your dog’s skin since it is soap- and paraben-free.

Made For: Dogs with allergies and sensitive skin who suffer reactions when using non-medicated shampoo.

Ouai Fur Bebe Pet Shampoo against white background

BEST SPLURGE

OUAI Fur Bébé Pet Shampoo, Mercer Street Scent

Why It Stands Out: This is one of the best dog shampoos for people who want to treat their canine to a spa-like experience. OUAI’s decadent vegan pet wash is engineered by the same folks who make the brand’s high-end human shampoo — it’s made with ingredients like aloe vera and rambutan seed extract, which protects the skin from pollution. The scent is downright luxurious, including notes of lemon, rose, jasmine, and white musk. Like the other washes recommended in this guide, it’s free of chemicals.

Made for: Dog owners who are hell-bent on finding the best-smelling dog shampoo out there, full stop.

Veterinary Formula Flea & Tick Shampoo against white background

BEST FOR FLEAS AND TICKS

Veterinary Formula Flea and Tick Shampoo for Dogs and Cats

Why It Stands Out: Our vet tech expert LaRock says she rarely recommends flea and tick shampoo, since the formulas can be very harsh. Still, if a dog needs treatment, it’s best to go with a veterinarian-approved shampoo like this one by Veterinary Formula. “This is great if your dog is suffering from a flea infestation,” adds Cuevas. “It can even be used as a repellent. It kills fleas and ticks on contact, and the active ingredient is pyrethrin, [which is] derived from natural flowers.” Based on our experts’ insight, this is the most gentle flea and tick shampoo that still uses insecticide. Note: pet owners should always wear gloves while applying it, though.

Made for: This flea and tick shampoo can be used on animals ages 12 weeks and older. It’s a smart solution for those seeking a soap-free and paraben-free formula that controls parasites.

Burts Bees Puppy Tearless Shampoo against white background

BEST FOR PUPPIES

Burt's Bees Puppy Shampoo

Why It Stands Out: Although some brands like Tropiclean are safe for puppies more than 12 weeks old, other dog shampoos, like this Burt’s Bees formula, are made specifically for puppies and their delicate bodies. It’s also one of the only puppy-focused formulas to utilize buttermilk and linseed oil, and it’s completely free of fragrances, sulfates, colorants, and harsh chemicals.

Made for: Designed for puppies who require an extra-gentle formula. Also a great choice for dog owners who want conditioning benefits in their puppy shampoo.

Sometimes, you just have to throw a dog a bone — and there are many reasons why you should. “The benefits of bones for dogs fall into two main categories: dental and mental health,” says veterinarian Sarah Jacobs of the Veterinary Emergency Group. “Bones, especially ones recommended by the Veterinary Oral Health Council, have been proven to help prevent tartar buildup and gingivitis. They can also prevent behavioral issues and boredom by providing a dog with something engaging to do.”

What to Look for in a Dog Bone

  • Edible synthetic materials
  • Cow, lamb, and beef raw bones
  • Durable enough to withstand aggressive chewing
  • Large bones for large breeds
  • Natural ingredients and free of chemicals

Pet owners can choose between a few different types of bones. Some of the best ones are actually synthetic or hard chews that are in the shape of a bone. Often made from nylon and rubber, these are primarily used to clean the teeth and work out the jaw. Marrow bones can accomplish that, too, but contain more nutrients, meaning they double as treats with health benefits.

There are also several safety concerns to keep in mind while shopping for dog bones. The first is size. “Pet parents should be careful not to give their dog a toy so small it can be swallowed whole,” says Jacobs. And, although it seems convenient, Jacobs says that pet owners should not feed dogs cooked or raw bones from food at home — this can lead to GI problems, broken teeth, rectal bleeding, choking, vomiting, or diarrhea. (Cooked bones splinter into small, sharp pieces, she explains.)

What the Experts Say

For this story, SPY interviewed multiple veterinarians and pet industry experts about the best bones for dogs, as well as the potential safety pitfalls to look out for.

According to Ashley Elizabeth Navarette, a clinical assistant professor of primary care at Texas A&M’s College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, there’s a general rule of thumb when shopping for dog bones: “Chew toys [should be] soft enough that you can indent them with your fingernail,” she says. “[You should be able to] hit them on your knee and it should not cause pain, too.” However, no material is 100% safe, as each individual dog has different chewing habits. “Generally, hard rubber toys or those chews designed specifically to be consumed are recommended,“ she adds.

Matthew McCarthy, a veterinarian and founder of the Juniper Valley Animal Hospital in Queens, New York, agrees. He also warns against animal bones, specifically. “There really are no animal bones that are not without risk,” he says. “Steak bones are too hard for teeth. Antlers are worse than bones because they’re harder and smaller. Poultry bones — chicken, turkey, and duck — are really awful because they’re full of air and splinter easily. The pieces can get stuck in the dog’s palate and cause an abscess or choking. If the bones get past the oral cavity, we can get a blockage in the esophagus, stomach, or intestines.“

While some vets like McCarthy agree that raw or non-synthetic bones can cause health issues, other vets like Linda Simon, DVM at a range of clinics in West London, says that this all depends on the size of the dog: “Large dogs sometimes cope well with large bones such as beef marrow bones,” she says. “Marrow contains nutrients including calcium, B12, and collagen, which can be beneficial to a dog’s health.”

Overall, according to our experts, buying the right bones doesn’t just mean being a better pet parent — it can possibly save a dog’s life, and that starts with being an educated consumer. Read on to learn more about the best dog bones on the market now.

Nylabone Power Chew Dog toy against white background

BEST OVERALL

Nylabone Power Chew

Why It Stands Out: Apart from having an affordable price tag, it has some seriously long-lasting durability that will save on replacement bones in the long run. The raised nubs can also improve dental health.

Made For: Adult dogs of all breeds and sizes. Power chewers.

The USA-made Nylabone is a favorite of many vets, including Dr. Jacobs. “The best chew toys include harder rubber-type toys such as Nylabone and Kong-type bones,” she says.

Unlike animal bones, this alternative won’t splinter and will also last much longer. Made from nylon, it’s packed with a yummy chicken flavor and offers a mess-free alternative to raw options. Design-wise, the Nylabone features tiny raised bristles, which can help reduce tartar and plaque. It’s available in various sizes for different breeds, all the way up to an extra-large.

Lastly, at less than $5, it’s also one of the best bones for dogs at a budget-friendly price point. That being said, the Nylabone may be too hard for puppies or dogs with dental problems.

Benebone Wishbone against white background

BEST FOR TOUGH CHEWERS

Benebone Wishbone

Why It Stands Out: Unlike the Nylabone, the Benebone (which is also sold in multiple sizes) has a unique wishbone shape that provides a more paw-friendly grip for dogs to gnaw on and hold. This ergonomic design also makes it harder to ingest.

Made For: Great for dogs of all breeds and sizes who don’t like a traditional bone shape. The Benebone is great for picky dogs, since it’s available in three different flavors.

Bones Chews Roasted Marrow Bone against white background

BEST MARROW BONE

Bone & Chews Made in USA Roasted Marrow Bone

Why It Stands Out:  Per Dr. Simon’s tips, natural options like marrow bones are some of the best options for dogs who need a little calcium, B12, and collagen in their diets. The marrow is contained at the center of the bone, like the middle of a Tootsie Pop. This bone works best with supervision to avoid splintering or bitten-off chunks.

Made For: This affordable option is best for large dogs without digestion issues since marrow can be rich. If it splits, be sure to take it away.

bag of Greenies Dental treats against white background

BEST FOR DENTAL CARE

Greenies Dental Care Chews

Why It Stands Out: Despite costing a little more than the average budget bone, this Veterinary Oral Health Council-recommended chew won’t splinter or cause trips to the vet. Unlike nylon or rubber bones, Greenies are easy to digest and contain vitamins and minerals. They also improve bad dog breath, whereas most dog bones worsen breath.

Made For: An edible, nutritious alternative for adult dogs of all sizes and breeds. Not suitable for dogs who are less than five pounds or younger than six months of age.

red rubber goodie bone against white background

BEST TREAT DISPENSING PICK

Kong Rubber Goodie Bone

Why It Stands Out: Rather than trying to break off morsels for themselves, dogs will have to work for a treat of their choice to be dispensed from this durable rubber bone by Kong. One of the top choices for doggie mental health, this will occupy any dog for hours. The brand also has an extreme line for power chewers.

Made For: Dogs of all sizes — this bone comes in small, medium, and large. It’s also great for dogs who tend to destroy upholstery and shoes.

bag of Jack & Pup filled dog bones with one outside of package against white background

BEST MULTIPACK OF DOG BONES

Jack & Pup Filled Dog Bones

Why It Stands Out: Jack and Pup is a clean canine brand that sells high-quality multipacks of individually wrapped bones. These are beef-filled shin bones that are an innovative blend of a bully stick and a regular filled bone — and they still cost less than $20.

Made For: A money-saving solution for multiple-dog households. Also great for dogs who go through bones quickly.

K9 Connoisseur Dog Bones against white background

BEST FOR SMALL BREEDS

K9 Connoisseur Single Ingredient Dog Bones

Why It Stands Out: Larger marrow bones are often easier to come by, but the little guys need nutrients, too. Made with responsibly sourced cattle, this pack of three small marrow bones by K9 Connoisseur is better for smaller breeds and free of any artificial ingredients and additives. It’s worth noting that these bones can smell slightly stronger than synthetic alternatives.

Made for: Small and medium dogs who weigh up to 50 pounds, including aggressive chewers. Dogs with digestive sensitivities should avoid or chew under supervision for a small amount of time.

bag of Jack & Pup 8" Shin bones with one bone outside of package

BEST FOR LARGE BREEDS

Jack & Pup Shin Bone

Why It Stands Out: For big breeds or dogs who prefer natural bones to synthetic ones, a digestible shin bone like this is a safe bet — it’s hard to swallow due to its larger size. With a hearty smoked beef flavor, these 8-inch chews come in a three-pack, which is highly unusual for a multi-pack and maximizes the consumer’s return on investment.

Made for: Large adult dogs without digestive issues, since marrow can be rich.

large Roam Forever Ostrich bone against white background

BEST LONG-LASTING PICK

Roam Forever Ostrich Bone

Why It Stands Out: While some of the best bones for dogs are made from beef, ostrich is an unlikely and practically invincible alternative. Large ostrich bones have a honeycomb structure inside, making them less likely to fracture, and reviewers note that these bones lasted for months without splintering. They’re also less stinky than marrow bones.

Made For: A grain-free option for medium to large breeds and super chewers.

bag of Better Belly large rolls against white background

BEST RAWHIDE DOG BONES

Better Belly Thins Large Rolls

Why It Stands Out: Rawhide is a soft material, meaning that dogs are less likely to choke on it or suffer intestinal damage once their saliva has softened it up. Still, the softer material on these edible chews means they don’t last as long as harder natural or synthetic bones. These rawhide bones are softer and thinner than other similar options. The rolled style is preferable to knotted ends, which can pose a choking hazard.

Made For: Perfect for gentle chewers of all sizes.

The Best Crates for Dogs of All Breeds and Sizes https://spy.com/articles/lifestyle/pets/best-dog-crates-1202959199/ https://spy.com/articles/lifestyle/pets/best-dog-crates-1202959199/#respond Thu, 15 Jun 2023 16:22:29 +0000 https://spy.com/?p=1202959199 Our editors independently select the products we recommend. Dogs are den animals by nature. For this reason, crates can be an especially helpful tool for training — they can provide a designated safe space for pups whenever they need to de-stress or relax. And, along with pee pads, they can help with potty-training by teaching dogs how to stay calm and self-soothe when owners aren’t around. “Crates provide a secure space for your dog when you can’t actively supervise them,” says Georgina Ushi Phillips, a Florida-based veterinarian. “This can be particularly useful during times when your dog may be at risk of getting into trouble or causing harm to themselves or your belongings. They can prevent destructive behavior, such as chewing on furniture or getting into hazardous substances.”

Additionally, Phillips says, crates can aid in training dogs to have boundaries and self-control: “They teach dogs to wait patiently, settle on cue, and remain calm in a confined space,” she explains. “They can be used as part of a positive reinforcement training approach, helping dogs learn to associate the crate with positive experiences and rewards.”

What to Consider When Buying a Dog Crate

Choosing the right dog crate will depend on factors like a dog’s breed and size, as well as your home’s setup. As a general rule of thumb, a crate should be large enough to accommodate a dog standing, sitting, and lying down comfortably. However, a crate that’s too big may encourage a dog to go potty, as there’s enough space to avoid the mess.

Dog crates can cost anywhere from around $30 to $400 based on size, design, and material. Puppies do well with expandable crates or larger crates they can grow into. Mesh may suffice for non-chewers, but chewers will do better with metal options. Plastic crates are a common, easy-to-clean choice, but they don’t circulate air like mesh or wire crates. Wooden crates are also popular, as they’re durable and tend to be more stylish — however, cleaning may require more maintenance, and they’re not always leak-proof.  All crates need to have a form of ventilation so that they’re breathable.

Lastly, for claustrophobic pups, crates with multiple access points and playpens have a more open-concept feel. They’re also a convenient option for senior dogs with mobility issues. To maximize a pet’s comfort, owners may want to line a crate with dog blankets or a dog bed, but if a dog is really resistant, alternative options include gates and fences. However, since dogs (or people) can knock these over easily, they’re not quite as effective.

What the Experts Say

For this story, SPY interviewed multiple pet industry experts, including veterinarians and dog trainers, about the benefits of dog crates and what to look for when shopping.

Krissy Wolf — the former owner of Woof Acres, a dog boarding facility in Tennessee — says that choosing the right crate material (and the right features) is important: “Wire crates are great because they are easy to clean and collapsible,” she explains. “For stronger dogs, consider a steel crate.” She also recommends looking for added features like removable plastic trays, food and water access doors (for easy feeding), pitched tops for taller dogs (so they have more head room), wheels (so owners can relocate a larger crate easily), and replacement trays (because they’re prone to cracking and breaking).

Renowned dog trainer Cesar Millan adds that once owners do have a crate, introducing their dog to it in the right way is essential: “It’s important to introduce the crate casually because you want your dog to feel comfortable,” he says. “Add a toy or blanket inside so it’s viewed as a place that is enjoyable. You want the dog to be happy-go-lucky when they enter, but calm once they’re inside. Also, it’s all about the human’s energy. Once a dog is used to the crate, you want to just walk away and not leave them in an excited state.”

Our experts also helped sort through the best dog crates available now.

Midwest Homes wire dog crate with dog inside

BEST OVERALL

Made For: Puppies and adult dogs of all life stages.

This well-ventilated crate by MidWest Homes for Pets is one of the best options for pups small and large, since it comes in multiple sizes. “These crates are made of metal wires and offer good airflow and visibility,” says Phillips. “They’re versatile, foldable, and often come with a removable tray. Wire crates like these are suitable for home use, training, and travel.”

Here, pet owners have the option of choosing between single-door and double-door versions, the latter of which allows for more versatility. Based on reviews, this crate is easy to set up and makes a solid choice for growing pups.

Why It Stands Out: This crate is an investment, but it’s worth the money for its quality and special features. Besides being fully water-resistant, it includes wheels, a carrying handle, and a puppy divider — plus, there’s even a removable tray to clean up messes with ease. It’s also travel-friendly, since it’s collapsible, and its garage-style door creates a more open-concept feel.

BEST BUDGET

Precision Pet Products Two Door Great Crate Wire Dog Crate

Why It Stands Out: This is one of the best dog crates for those who want customizable options and lots of ventilation. dark wood pet crate against white background

BEST WOOD

Casual Home Wooden Pet Crate

Why It Stands Out: This solid wood crate with a strong lockable gate looks like a handsome end table. Since it’s made from solid wood, it’s just as durable as metal and plastic, though it’s not as easy to clean. For this reason, pet parents may want to place a crate bed, pee pads, or waterproof blankets inside.

Made For: Owners who don’t want an unsightly dog crate in their home or people who live in small spaces and require multi-functional furniture. Not an ideal choice for chewers and destroyers.

Go Pet Club orange-red dog crate against white background

BEST SOFT CRATE

Go Pet Club AB32 Soft Dog Crate

Why It Stands Out: This spacious soft crate comes in multiple sizes and includes a sheepskin mat and carrying case — all for under $50. Phillips is a fan, too. “These crates are convenient for travel and short-term use but are generally not recommended for dogs prone to chewing or scratching,” she says. “They’re not as sturdy or secure as wire or plastic crates but are easy to set up, fold, and transport.”

Made For: Dogs of all sizes, but consider sizing up for larger breeds. Not for dogs that chew or scratch, since the mesh door can be damaged.

SportPet Designs plastic travel dog crate with wheels and a wire door against white background

BEST AIRLINE-FRIENDLY

SportPet Designs Plastic Kennels Rolling Plastic Wire Door Travel Dog Crate

Why It Stands Out: Phillips cites plastic crates as a popular choice for flights. “Plastic crates are sturdy and provide a more enclosed and den-like environment for your dog during travel and airline transportation,” she explains. “They often have a front-facing door and ventilation holes.” This crate takes it one step further and is fully airline-approved. Wheels snap on and off as needed.

Made For: Dog owners who fly frequently with their pets. Also for dogs of all sizes, since it comes in sizes small through 3XL.

Medium Wood WLO Wood Gables Dog Crate inside home

BEST MODERN

WLO Wood Gabled Modern Dog

Why it Stands Out: This dog crate looks and feels like a home — a reminder that pups are part of the family and deserve the best. It features a peaked roof and a comfy silicone-based cushion.

Made For: Dogs of all sizes — the largest version has a 149-pound maximum weight capacity.

The Best Dog Crates, According to Professional Trainers

BEST FOR MULTI-DOG HOUSEHOLDS

Tucker Murphy Pet 52-inch Dog Crate with Divider Panel

Why It Stands Out: For those who live in a multi-dog household, an extra-large crate with a divider may make more sense than two separate crates, especially if the dogs like to be in close proximity. This one comes with two removable floor trays to remove messes easily, and it’s also one of the sturdiest crates on this list.

Made For: Households with multiple dogs, outdoor areas, and larger homes. It’s not suitable for indoor usage in small spaces, or for small dogs (since they may use the extra space as a place to go to the bathroom).

Fleas are every dog owner’s enemy — they can lay up to 50 eggs a day, and getting them under control can feel impossible once they’ve already infested a home. Although many oral treatments and topical applications exist, one of the best preventative options is flea collars, which can provide coverage from three to 12 months — an especially useful thing for dogs who spend ample time outside or in wooded areas.

Michelle Dulake, a veterinarian and founder of Fera Pet Organics, says that there are a few unique benefits of using a flea collar. “Flea collars are easy to use since it requires little effort to put them on or take them off,” she says. “They’re also long-lasting — they can work for up to several months — and are a more affordable option compared to other flea preventatives.”

However, according to New York-based veterinarian Matthew McCarthy, flea collars work better as a supplement than a standalone treatment. “While they’re certainly budget-friendly, flea collars don’t quite measure up to the topical or oral treatments available today,” he says. (A collar can take up to 48 hours to start killing fleas, whereas topical spot treatments get to work within 8-12 hours and oral meds do within a mere 2-4 hours.) Other potential drawbacks, according to Dulake, include limited coverage and chemical exposure to insecticides, some of which can pose a risk to other pets in the household or cause topical allergic reactions in some dogs. “The effectiveness of flea collars compared to other flea control products such as liquid treatments depends on the individual pet and the severity of the flea infestation in the local area,” she adds.

So, if you’re battling an urgent flea situation, it’s likely better to go with a spot treatment or oral medication. But if not, collars are often a less expensive alternative and aren’t as messy to apply. Either way, before using one, it’s best to consult with your veterinarian first.

Seresto Large Dog flea and tick collar against white background

BEST OVERALL

Seresto Flea & Tick Prevention Collar

Why It Stands Out: Seresto offers one of the oldest, most affordable, and most reliable veterinarian-recommended flea collars for dogs. It also stands out because one can use it on puppies, and it has a generous eight-month protection period.

Made for: Dogs over seven weeks of age who need flea and tick protection.

Seresto is McCarthy’s top pick. “I like the Seresto collar by Elanco,” he says. “It provides eight months of flea and tick control, can be used in dogs over seven weeks of age, has a safety release feature in case your doggie gets it caught on a fence, and swimming or bathing will not affect its efficacy.”

Along with being resistant to the elements, the Seresto collar remains one of the options because of its tried-and-true formula of imidacloprid, which kills fleas before they can lay eggs, and flumethrin, which can kill ticks before they latch onto a dog’s skin. These two ingredients have also been considered safe and effective for decades and start to kill fleas within 24 hours of application. Bonus: it doesn’t have a greasy feel or an odor.

Although Seresto’s large collars can be used on smaller breeds by cutting off excess fabric, the brand sells flea collars specifically for small dogs, too.

These Dog Beds Give Your Pooch a Comfortable Place to Sleep for a Budget-Friendly Price https://spy.com/articles/lifestyle/pets/cheap-dog-beds-1202857316/ https://spy.com/articles/lifestyle/pets/cheap-dog-beds-1202857316/#respond Mon, 06 Feb 2023 14:00:00 +0000 https://spy.com/?p=1202857316 Our editors independently select the products we recommend. Buying a new bed can be an expensive venture. And the process is not much different when it comes to buying one of the best dog beds. High-quality materials, advanced technology, and fancy extras can add up quickly. Luckily, not all beds, whether dog or human, have to cost an arm and a leg. There is a wide range of cheap dog beds that provide your pooch with a comfortable place to rest without breaking the bank.

There are numerous good reasons to give your pooch a comfy place to catch Zs. The right bed supports joints and facilitates better quality rest. The best dog beds are also easier to clean and more loved by our furry friends. They can even be used to entice your dog to sleep in their own bed if you’re concerned about your current dog-in-your-bed sleeping arrangement

But before you invest in one of the best cheap doggie beds, let’s look at the key factors to think about when making your decision.

What to Consider Before Buying a Cheap Dog Bed

Finding a great dog bed which is loved by your dog and easy on your wallet is actually surprisingly easy. A lot of online retailers, including both Amazon and Chewy, have numerous options at a sub-$50 price tag which are sure to be met with your dog’s approval. But before you click the buy button on the first one you find, answer the following questions to ensure you find the right choice for your dog:

How big is your dog? Factors like your dog’s height and weight should be considered before deciding what bed size to buy. Use this handy guide to figure out exactly what size bed you need. Alternatively, here’s a quick overview of which size is best for general dog sizes:

  • Small: Dogs up to 25 pounds
  • Medium: Dogs between 25–50 pounds
  • Large: Dogs between 51–100 pounds
  • Extra Large: Dogs over 100 pounds

While your dog’s size is arguably the most important thing to consider, it’s also worth thinking about these additional factors, too.

How does your dog prefer to sleep? Similarly to people, individual dogs have sleeping positions they prefer. Knowing how your pooch prefers to sleep will help you choose a bed that is better suited to them. Available options include rectangular beds, oval beds and beds with bolstered edges.

Do you need a bed for at home or on-the-go use? Some cheap dog beds have been made with on-the-go use in mind. Whether it’s to fit inside a crate or be particularly easy to roll up and throw in the back of your car, if you’re looking for a bed to come camping, vacationing or visiting friends, it’s worth checking out options better suited to the task.

Is your dog particularly messy? It’s easy to assume that all dogs are messy. But the reality is some dogs have a particular talent for creating a mess out of almost nothing. If your dog could find a dirty puddle in a desert or finds stinky things to roll in before you’ve even had a chance to shout “no,” it may be worth choosing a waterproof bed or an option that is machine washable to make cleaning and maintenance more convenient.

Once you have answered these questions, you should have a good idea about the size, shape, and style of bed dog you’re looking for. Read on to find out where to buy the best cheap dog beds.

Keep Your Dog Spry Into Their Golden Years With Hip and Joint Supplements https://spy.com/articles/lifestyle/pets/dog-joint-supplements-1202917180/ https://spy.com/articles/lifestyle/pets/dog-joint-supplements-1202917180/#respond Tue, 03 Jan 2023 21:00:00 +0000 https://spy.com/?p=1202917180 Our editors independently select the products we recommend. You might not hear of glucosamine and chondroitin until your dogs are already showing signs of joint pain and degeneration in their senior years. In many dogs, that looks like stiffness in the hips when rising or laying down, decreased pep, difficulty climbing stair, getting into the car or up onto the couch or bed.

Dogs gradually produce less glucosamine as they age, resulting in degeneration of joint cartilage. “Glucosamine is naturally occurring in the body and helps form and repair cartilage,” explains Dr. Rolan Tripp, DVM, CABC, and founder of PetHappiness.

Glucosamine supplements given during a dog’s adult life can help prevent joint wear and tear and improve mobility and comfort their later years. “Ideally, joint supplements for dogs should be given well before you see any signs of joint degeneration,” explains Dr. Antje Joslin of Dogtopia and Co-owner of 99th Avenue and Lower Buckeye Animal Clinic in the Greater Phoenix, Arizona area. “Any large breed dog or dog that is predisposed to developing osteoarthritis should be started on chondroprotective agents as early as possible. They can be given to puppies as young as 8 weeks of age. Dogs that have been diagnosed with early osteoarthritis will benefit from supplementation as well.”

Adds Dr. Tripp, “Glucosamine supplements are also given to performance dogs and dogs with hip dysplasia and osteoarthritis to alleviate discomfort and slow down joint cartilage degeneration.”

When selecting your dog joint supplements, look for those that contain both glucosamine hydrochloride (HCl) and chondroitin sulfate as these ingredients work best when given in tandem.

You can choose the form that your best friend prefers, too. Chews, tablets, powders, liquids, treats, daily food and bone broth are all available today. If you’re not sure, try a couple different styles until you find the one you both like and more importantly, one that you will remember to give every day.

We developed this list of some of the top-rated dog joint supplements available so you can proactively protect your dog’s future mobility and help your older dogs feel stronger.

“You’ll know glucosamine supplements are working,” says Dr. Tripp, “when your dog rises easily from a resting position, shows a normal gait, is happier on walks, and is more willing to go up the stairs or play.”

1. Pet Honesty Hip and Joint Health Maximum Strength Soft Chews

BEST OVERALL

To earn the Best Overall spot, the supplement must have healthy, natural ingredients with balanced, optimal levels of glucosamine and chondroitin. They must also be affordable and taste good to dogs without using cheap fillers. This one also happens to be non-GMO.

Each chew includes 400 mg of glucosamine HCl from shellfish plus added methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) and sodium hyaluronate, also known as hyaluronic acid (HA). MSM is a common anti-inflammatory used to treat osteoarthritis and other tendon and ligament disorders. It also promotes healthy digestion.

You may recognize HA because it is common in human skincare products because it helps your skin retain moisture. In dog supplements, it keeps joints hydrated and increases the thickness or viscosity of the fluid in their joints providing a cushion between their bones. Other benefits include improved wound healing and prevention of acid reflux.

Added organic turmeric—a spice used in curries and mustards—contains the active ingredient curcumin, which has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, wound healing and anticancer activities. When given with the black pepper (which contains piperidine), turmeric is about 2,000% more effective.

An interesting ingredient, New Zealand green-lipped mussels (GLM), are a rich natural source of glucosamine, chondroitin, glycogens and omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids. Easy to digest and absorb, GLM improve joint health and promote a healthy skin and coat naturally. Additional omega fatty acids come from fish and wild Alaskan salmon oils. Ground egg shell provides an excellent source of cartilage-building collagen.

Another bonus ingredient comes from the plant, Yucca schidigera. While the yucca plant is toxic to dogs, the root extract naturally reduces swelling, promotes healthy digestion and reduces the odor of dog waste.

What’s not included is just as important. Made without corn, wheat, soy, or artificial colors, flavors or preservatives, your dog will love the natural blend of chicken, bacon and hickory flavors.

Customers confirm that it can lessen joint stiffness in just a couple of weeks. These excellent chews are appropriate for all life stages and sizes. They’re also Certified by the National Animal Supplement Council (NASC) meaning they are responsible suppliers that have successfully passed a comprehensive third-party audit and exceed NASC quality requirements.

Morning is in the name because Reggie has developed a wise system to help you remember to give the supplement, without having to give them all at once. They also recommend their Morning Multivitamin and Evening Skin and Coat supplements as part of a complete balance for your dog.

There is added miscanthus grass to provide some natural fiber that keeps your dog regular. They’ll drool over the peanut butter, pork liver and sunflower oil that contribute to the flavor.

7. Nodens Small Dog Hip and Joint

BEST FOR SMALL BREEDS

The majority of joint supplements come in doses for all sizes of dogs, meaning you might need to give your small dog a fraction of a single chew or treat. Remove the guess work and get the exact right dose by using this liquid joint supplement designed specifically for small dogs.

Made with human-grade ingredients, this joint supplement includes 260 mg of glucosamine HCl as well as chondroitin, MSM, HA and manganese. The beef-flavored daily dose is based on weight and can be given orally or dripped over their food. According to the manufacturers, one two-ounce bottle should last a 10-pound dog about 2 months.

Some ingredients in this supplement for dogs have “USP” after them. That means those ingredients meet or exceed the United States Pharmacopeia standards set by the FDA for human and animal consumption. Nodens also notes that although most MSM is sourced from China, theirs is of the highest purity and comes from U.S. sources.

Refrigeration is recommended after opening and the unopened bottle has a 1-year shelf life. There is a warning on the label that you don’t see on all supplements, “Consult your vet before using this product in dogs with clotting disorders, on anticoagulant medications, diabetes or metabolic disorder causing hypoglycemia, a history of urinary tract stones and allergies to shellfish.”

8. Nutriline Labs Flex-EZ Joint Supplement

BEST FOR LARGE BREEDS

Most supplements are formulated for a wide range of dog sizes, so getting a daily dose into your large or giant breed dog can require that you give four to six chews a day. Although your dog probably wouldn’t mind, your budget might.

Specifically designed for dogs 60 pounds and larger, this chew boasts an anti-inflammatory blend that includes 900 mg glucosamine HCl—the highest concentration of any tablet or chew on our list—as well as chondroitin, turmeric, MSM, Boswellia, Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

Forms of Boswellia serrata, also known as the Indian frankincense tree, have been used for centuries in Asian and African folk medicine as plant extracts to treat chronic inflammatory illnesses in humans.

EPA and DHA are omega-3 fatty acids that occur naturally in fish and are known to help reduce pain, swelling and degeneration.

Added molasses, pork liver and fish oil mean you won’t have to work to get a daily dose into your dog. Manufacturers also note that your dog’s dose can be halved after the first four to six weeks.

9. Paramount Pet Health Liquid Vitamins Skin and Coat Support Dog Supplement

BEST LIQUID

Liquids are among the most easily absorbable form of joint supplements for both dogs and humans. This liquid supplement has a minimum of 300 mg glucosamine HCl along with chondroitin, MSM, EPA, DHA and coenzyme Q10. CoQ-10 also reduces inflammation that can damage joint cartilage. As a bonus, this liquid also includes a wide range of essential vitamins and minerals and a minimum of 1 billion CFU (colony forming units) of gut microorganisms (probiotics) to promote healthy digestion and absorption. So you can use it like a daily multiple vitamin and digestive probiotic all in one dose.

Although there are other supplements out there that combine probiotics, joint health and daily vitamins and minerals into one dose, this one contains no artificial flavors or sweeteners and has a 90-day shelf life after opening.

10. NaturVet Glucosamine DS Maintenance Joint Care

BEST LEVELED

NaturVet is one of the few companies that offer multiple levels with differing ingredients depending on the cause of your dog’s joint issues. Level 1 Maintenance should be used as a proactive supplement for younger pets to help grow and maintain healthy cartilage and joint function in active pets. Level 2 Moderate is formulated to maintain joint flexibility and support healthy hip and joint function in adult pets, including large breed and overweight pets. Level 3 ArthriSoothe Gold is recommended for dogs needing the most support, such as senior dogs and those recovering from joint-related surgery. All three levels use the HCl form of glucosamine from a shellfish source.

Level 3 has added MSM, HA, a Proprietary Enzyme Blend that maximizes absorption plus GLM, Boswellia and yucca.

Like a few others on our list, this one is NASC Certified and appropriate for all ages and sizes. We prefer chews, but this system is also available as a liquid and tablets too.

11. Herbsmith Sound Dog Viscosity Advanced Joint Support

BEST POWDER

Using a powder can be an easy way to give joint supplements to your dog. When your dog is properly hydrated, powders are readily absorbed. Just sprinkle it over their dry kibble or stir into their wet food. This dog joint supplement was developed by a female veterinarian who is also the owner and operator of Herbsmith, Dr. Bessent, D.V.M. About 500 mg of glucosamine per serving, this supplement also includes MSM, HA, curcumin, Boswellia, flax seed, yucca and corydalis.

Corydalis is a plant that has been used as a pain reliever in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. An active ingredient in corydalis, called dehydrocorybulbine (DHCB), has been shown in laboratory mice to be effective against inflammatory pain and injury-related nerve pain. DHCB won’t heal a joint, but it does block pain signals from reaching the brain the way some prescription pain killers work.

Made in the USA in Wisconsin in facilities that are FDA, NASC and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) certified, this supplement is appropriate for all ages and sizes. This brand is a bit more expensive than some of the other brands because of the higher nutrient concentrations. You can also get a similar blend from Herbsmith in small and large chews.

12. Petaxin Hip and Joint Support for Dogs

BEST FOR WORKING DOGS

Dogs that are very active, such as those that compete in agility and frisbee competitions, and those that work, such as herding and police dogs, need a potent hip and joint supplement that will keep them strong and in top shape so they can handle the daily impacts of their work while also preventing weakness-related injuries.

This dog joint supplement has 500 mg of glucosamine per beef-flavored soft chew, plus chondroitin, MSM, HA, organic turmeric, vitamins C and E, manganese and yucca. Manganese is essential to build the enzymes that make healthy collagen, the main structural protein in skin and connective tissues. Your dogs will love the cheese and hickory flavors and beef liver powder.

Made in the USA in FDA-registered facilities that follow GMP-certified standards, this supplement is appropriate for all ages and sizes and contains no corn, grain, wheat or artificial flavorings.

Do Glucosamine and Chondroitin Actually Help?

“Glucosamine hydrochloride is a compound that is found in the body that is a building block of cartilage and stimulates the growth of cartilage,” explains Joslin. “Most joint supplements also contain chondroitin, which is a supplement that works by inhibiting cartilage-destroying enzymes. When glucosamine HCl and chondroitin are given together they appear to have a synergistic effect and have been shown to lessen joint inflammation.” Synergistic means that the two ingredients work better when given together than either of them do when given separately.

The science also supports the use of these supplements. “There have been several well-controlled studies that show improvement in dogs with osteoarthritis of the hip and elbow that responded after taking oral glucosamine hydrochloride and chondroitin sulfate,” notes Dr. Joslin. “Dogs showed improvement in pain scores and weight bearing activities. Although, the response to supplements took about two months to achieve.”

Does the Form of Glucosamine Matter?

“There is a difference between glucosamine hydrochloride and glucosamine sulfate,” notes Dr. Joslin. “The sulfate is better absorbed by the body but there is no evidence that it shows up in the joint tissues after being taken orally. Therefore, use a product containing glucosamine hydrochloride. It makes no sense to give your dog a product that won’t work where it is needed.”

I Bought This $50 GPS Dog Tag Tracker And It Beats Those Other Pricey, High-Tech Ones https://spy.com/articles/lifestyle/pets/qalo-traq-id-tag-find-your-dog-pov-1202917838/ https://spy.com/articles/lifestyle/pets/qalo-traq-id-tag-find-your-dog-pov-1202917838/#respond Fri, 23 Dec 2022 19:00:00 +0000 https://spy.com/?p=1202917838 Our editors independently select the products we recommend. My dog is probably my best friend in the world, and yours probably is too. We might talk to our pets like they understand us, but the reality is that they’re animals and can get into situations that we’d rather them not be in. Even the best-behaved dogs get out every now and then, they might see a cat that (in their mind) needs chasing, or they might just want to sniff around the neighborhood unencumbered by their leash.

Even though my dog is a COVID puppy who follows my wife and me everywhere, we still like to have a way to know where he is just in case he ever runs away or gets lost. We looked for a good GPS collar, but we saw them going for up to $700, which just wasn’t feasible. When we found the Qalo TraQ ID tag, we were thrilled to find out it cost just $49.95.

The Qalo TraQ ID makes a great Christmas gift for dog lovers, but it’s also a practical purchase for anybody who wants to keep a close eye on their pet.

The Qalo TraQ ID tag uses Tile’s Bluetooth-finding technology to track your pet, the same company that’s famous for helping people find their keys. And yes, it’s the same technology behind some of the most reliable luggage trackers we’ve used for traveling. It uses the Tile network of global app users and network extenders, like compatible Echo devices, to pinpoint your dog’s location in the app.

The TraQ ID tag features a nontoxic plastic build that’s durable and silences jingles from your dog’s collar, it’s waterproof for up to one hour, and the battery lasts up to two years. Also included is a ring feature that you can use within 200 feet of the tag. Lastly, just like the rest of Qalo’s tags, this one is stylish and fully customizable.

In my personal experience, this thing is definitely tough. My dog shook off his collar in the yard, and after a couple of days, when I grabbed it, the TraQ ID had made it through all of the rain and wind the Pacific Northwest threw at it and still functions perfectly to this day.

Our pets are important to us. They’re members of our family, not property. If you’re looking for a way to help ensure the safety of your furry friend, I can wholeheartedly recommend the Qalo TraQ ID tag. It’s reliable, and it gives me peace of mind regarding my pup’s well-being.

The Best Dog Brushes for Shedding Will Banish Fur From Your Home https://spy.com/articles/lifestyle/pets/best-dog-brush-shedding-1202880224/ https://spy.com/articles/lifestyle/pets/best-dog-brush-shedding-1202880224/#respond Thu, 22 Dec 2022 16:30:00 +0000 https://spy.com/?p=1202880224 Our editors independently select the products we recommend. Winter is basically here, and even though prime pet shedding season is behind us, don’t be surprised if you still find pet hair all over everything. Now that weather is cooling off, pet coats are filling in and leaving extra strands behind. Add in the fact that we’re indoors a lot more and prone to notice more dust and dirt, and you shouldn’t be surprised if you find dog fur all over your furniture, dog beds and the carpet.

With shedding also comes the likelihood of more matted and tangled fur because loose fur that isn’t brushed out can impact the skin, mat, or pelt. The best dog brush for shedding removes that transitional hair without excessive pulling. These dog brushes also redistribute natural oils to keep your dog healthy and happy.

Looking for suggestions on the best dog brushes to help keep your pet’s fur smooth and sleek during this tough time? Read on for our top dog brushes for shedding.

The 8 Best Healthy Dog Treats That Pups and Pet Parents Will Both Love

Keep Fido Warm and Snug All Winter Long With These Heated Dog Houses https://spy.com/articles/lifestyle/pets/heated-dog-houses-1202807032/ https://spy.com/articles/lifestyle/pets/heated-dog-houses-1202807032/#respond Wed, 21 Dec 2022 15:30:00 +0000 https://spy.com/?p=1202807032 Our editors independently select the products we recommend. It’s no secret that we love our pets, or that we take our roles as fur parents very seriously. That’s probably why there are so many pet products out there, from ridiculously adorable outfits and toys to food brands and accessories that just make us happy. One thing the dog market is seriously lacking though? Heated dog houses.

“The size of the dog house makes a huge difference in its ability to keep a dog warm. The house needs to be large enough that a pup can comfortably fit into it, stand up and turn around, but not so large that there’s a lot of wasted space that can draw heat away from a dog,” explains veterinarian and writer, Dr. Chyrle Bonk, DVM, of Orofino, Idaho. “Measuring your pup’s length and height are a good place to start, or some manufacturers of heated dog houses may offer size suggestions based on your dog’s breed and size.”

As with all heating appliances, safety is paramount. “If using something with an electrical component, make sure that it is designed for dogs, not humans. This can make a difference in the safety of the product,” adds Dr. Bonk. “You’ll also want a product that is wind and waterproof, easily cleaned, and durable enough to stand up to normal wear and tear from your pup and the weather. Plastic or wood are good options.”

If you have a pup that loves to be outdoors but has a harder time with frigid weather, you may have a hard time finding a heated dog house that’s going to stand up to snow and sleet. That can be problematic, considering not all dog breeds are good with the cold.

Dogs vs. the Outdoors

While no dog should be left outside for long periods of time when it’s freezing outside (this is actually the law), it’s also important to let your pet get outdoors for some fresh air and exercise. It’s also essential they get a little bit of sunshine to help them combat potential seasonal affective disorder (because yes, dogs definitely get sad too).

A heated dog kennel or even a heated lamp or pad in a dog house can help to keep your pet warm and protected against the elements when they need a quick break from their romp but aren’t quite ready to come in yet.

Sadly, there’s definitely a shortage when it comes to such products, but we’ve managed to source a few good picks for you. Some come with heat sources directly incorporated into the dog house design itself, while others are insulated to keep heat inside as well as possible. And then there are the must-have accessories that help you to deck out your dog house in a warm and fuzzy way.

Here are some of the top heated dog houses and accessories available today to keep your pooch comfy.

1. ASL Solutions Dog Palace Insulated Heated Dog House

BEST OVERALL

The name has palace in it for a reason so you can treat your dog like a king or queen on cold nights. “This is a great option because it has thick insulation, a plastic, easy-to-clean design and an internal heater and digital thermostat that can be monitored and adjusted remotely so you know your dog is safe and cozy,” notes Dr. Bonk.

Your medium to large dog (shoulder height of 26.5-inches or less) will love the waterproof, insulated design that includes two to four inches of insulation in the sides, floor, roof and door. You’ll like the remote for conveniently adjusting the temperature (55 to 75˚ F) without putting your boots on.

An easy pass-through, self-closing, removable door keeps the heat in no matter how often your dog runs in and out. Designed to suit multiple or extra-large dogs, the door accommodates dogs up to 27 inches at the shoulder. The bottom half of the door is removable, and it can be held or tied open but will not stay open on its own.

Raised flooring insulates the doghouse from the ground. A simple, sloping drainage system in the floor keeps the home dry and makes it easy to clean.

You can feel good about your purchase because these are made in the USA. This and other Dog Palaces, including the larger round CRB Dog Palace Insulated Heated Dog House for multiple dogs or those over 26.5-inches at the shoulder, come with a 10-year warranty on the plastic house against cracking and breaking and a 1-year warranty on the heater.

It’s easy to assemble, but you’ll need your own tools. You can choose from two-tone brown/tan or gray/taupe.

2. Pets Imperial Insulated Wooden Norfolk Dog Kennel

It’s a great house for larger dog breeds or those with several smaller pups since it holds up to 154 pounds of weight. It also has a removable floor and a roof that opens to make cleaning a breeze. Speaking of the floor, it’s raised to keep air circulating, and it comes with adjustable, rot-free plastic-capped feet, so even if your backyard is muddy or uneven, you’ll get the best possible setup for your pet.

3. K&H Pet Products Lectro-Soft Outdoor Heated Pet Bed

BEST HEATED BED

Add instant warmth to any existing dog house with this soft, orthopedic foam-base bed, which is safe to use outdoors in sheltered areas where your pooch hangs out. “Older dogs or those with health conditions that make keeping warm even more important would benefit and be a little more comfortable with heat and support for achy joints.”

It has a removable fleece cover that makes it easy to wash and a steel-wrapped cord to keep it safe and secure. There are no adjustable temperature controls; however, the bed uses an internal thermostat that sits at 102˚F when your dog is on the bed and at about 10-15 degrees above ambient air temperature when your dog is out playing and doing other dog things. This bed is also available in a 4-sided bolster style for added coziness.

This easy-to-install unit is a smart tool for those wanting to add warmth to their pet’s outdoor spaces. It uses an internal fan to circulate warm air throughout up to 75 cubic feet, with 300 watts of heating power. We love that you can also set it to fan-only mode, which makes it a smart addition to dog houses in the warmer summer months as well. Like many other models, this one comes with an abrasion-resistant cord to keep pets safe, and it can also be used for cats, rabbits or chicken shelters if you happen to have those animals hanging around, too.

7. K&H Thermo Heated Outdoor Kitty House

BEST FOR SMALL BREEDS

Yes, this is a heated cat house, but if you have a smaller breed of dog, this works just as well when keeping your pup nice and warm as the mercury starts to drop. It’s insulated and heated via the 20-watt plush bed inside the unit itself and comes with two exits so that your pup is never trapped — even if another animal somehow happens to be coming after them.

K&H specializes in heated pet pads and shelters, so they offer a variety of products in a range of sizes, including other products that made our list.

8. Petmate Dogloo XT

BEST IGLOO

This classic-shaped dog house comes in a variety of sizes, although be prepared to pay extra shipping charges the larger you go. It’s designed to protect your pups from poor weather during the changing seasons with its dome-shaped roof, which naturally sheds snow and rain. Meanwhile, the extended doorway also protects against harsh winds. This house is insulated and ventilated for proper airflow. Even though it doesn’t come with any kind of actual heater, it’s a sturdy and solid bet that definitely protects against the elements.

“This is another great option that provides a lot of insulation for dogs with thicker hair coats or can be used with a heated pad for dogs with thinner or shorter hair,” adds Dr. Bonk.

9. Mother’s Heartbeat Indoor Heated Pet Bed

BEST FOR PUPPIES

Granted, this is not a dog house, but it made our list because it ingeniously uses heat—and the sound of a mother’s heartbeat—to comfort your puppy and lower stress and anxiety as they adjust to their new home without their mother or siblings. This could also mean better sleep at night for all of you. Of course, your dog doesn’t have to be in their puppy years to appreciate it. The durable polyester is machine washable and meant to last.

Each cozy bed includes a Pet Bed Warmer, a bone-shaped pillow, and a heartbeat device that can be installed in either the pillow or the bed. Dogs’ heartbeats vary based on their size, so you you choose from three different bed sizes, each with a heartbeat device with a different heart rate in heartbeats per minute, based on the puppy’s parents’ size or breed. They even have a separate size for kittens.

Since safety is paramount, this product has been tested and certified by MET Labs to exceed U.S. and Canadian electrical safety standards and comes with one-year limited warranty.

10. K&H Thermal-Bowl Heated Dog Bowl

BEST BOWL

Also not a dog house, this heated dog bowl is essential for when the temperatures dip. Staying hydrated is especially important in the cold. You’ll sleep better knowing that your dog has access to water at all times.

Thermostatically controlled, you only need to plug it in and fill it up. Energy-efficient and using only 12 to 25 watts (depending on size), you won’t notice an increase in your power bill. The plastic BPA-free bowl comes in four sizes. All electronics are safely sealed inside, and the 5.5-foot cord is steel wrapped to prevent abrasion. Thankfully, it comes with a one-year limited warranty.
